I believe that people so overthinks the racist views when it comes to episodes like this. Not once did that even crossed my mind.. it wasn’t a good episode, but like you guys I did enjoy portions of the episode!

Lol, I don’t think it was that bad nor do I go down the racist path with it anymore than any other culture in the future settings of Star Trek. That aside, it definitely wasn’t a good episode.

Definitely had the DNA of a TOS episode here with the arena fight & the "exotic" aliens. TNG is still finding it's self and it won't fully develop it's unique tone till Season 3(where it gets consistently great). As part of the condition to create this show, beyond the originally planned handful of TV specials, was to have a very small budget in Season 1. As I've said before Season 1 of TNG is Season 3 TOS without the charm

I don't know that I disliked Code of Honor much more than any other episodes -- or episodes of this time period. As I remember Season One and looking at some websites, I think the quality picked up a bit a third of the way through Season One and picked up a bit again two-thirds of the way through the season. Then the quality seemed to slip again and fluctuated a bit at the beginning of a slightly-shorter Season Two due to a prolonged writers' strike.

Apparently this is about the most hated Star Trek episode ever. In 2016, fans at the 50th anniversary Star Trek convention voted this episode -- the 2nd worst episode of any Star Trek series behind only an ill-received final episode. In 2017, Screen Rant ranked this episode -- the 2nd worst episode of the Star Trek franchise. Jonathan Frakes referred to the episode as an -- embarrassment heaped upon us in season one, mostly on Denise. Frakes previously called it a -- racist piece of (expletive deleted). TNG actors Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner have all shared their disdain for the episode. In 2012, Brent Spiner said that it was -- racist and the worst of the series. In 2013 Michael Dorn referred to it as -- the worst episode of Star Trek ever filmed. In 2010, Star Trek actor Garrett Wang said this episode -- stinks to which LeVar Burton agreed. Star Trek writer Tracy Tormé said that episode was -- offensive (as) it was like Amos 'n' Andy in the way African Americans were depicted. James Hunt of Den of Geek said that it is -- quite possibly the worst piece of Star Trek ever made. Jamahl Epsicokhan of Jammer's Reviews said that it was -- one of Trek's worst episodes.

This is one of the episodes I kind of use for background noise. It's playing, but I usually don't pay much attention to it.

I'm Irish. There's a 2nd season episode that plays into 'Oirish' tropes and it is just embarrassing and incredibly lazy. Now, I don't think there was any intent by the director (who apparently was responsible for the casting of guest actors) of 'Code Of Honour' to be racist......but it still is uncomfortable in how very old cliches about how non-white people behave come into play. The kidnapping of a young white woman as another unwilling lover is the most obvious. I do like the performances of these guest actors though.

Someone’s probably said this, but the prime directive ultimately boils down to this: No contact with a species until they’ve achieved faster-than-light travel. Warp 1 is the speed of light, so it’s “breaking the warp barrier”. The idea is that once a species has achieved this, they’re ready to join the interstellar community with their culture intact. Before this, the power dynamic is way too lopsided. Granted, the prime directive was a bit of an evolving concept at this point in the franchise. Without getting into spoilers, you’ll see episodes where pre-warp species are observed “incognito”.
