PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT COMMENTARY - The Shining (1980)

The Shining (1980) is Alex's favorite movie. Josh has seen it once before. With it being October and Doctor Sleep (2019) coming up in our Mike Flanagan series, this felt like the perfect choice for our new 'Audience Cut' series.

An in-depth discussion video will follow later this month on YouTube.

There are syncing moments at the beginning of the movie, then 40 mins, 90 mins and 2 hours into the video.

Every other movie: (shows card saying that it is now Tuesday) Me: Ok, so it's now Tuesday. The Shining: (eerie music turning the Tuesday card into a jump scare) Me: Oh, Shit! Tuesday!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!

Timothy Hennon

It's crazy to me how effective the score is in this movie. All those strings just make you feel like you're going mad, even when nothing scary is happening the strings are doing their work on you

James Bottas

Wow! I am totally intrigued. I had no idea there was an alternate British cut. I must find it and watch it immediately.

Well I just finished the watch along and I have some thoughts that perhaps I will save for the discussion. I’m going to tell my Lloyd encounter story, which is one of my very favorite film actor meet up stories. But right now I would just like to say That joshes certain misgivings about the film I do hope are not too entirely unsettling. For if they are, then might I be so bold. As to say that it may be necessary for Alex to . . . Correct him. In the harshest possible way.

Rich Cirivilleri

From what I remember it was neat

If you've seen "Ready Player One", what is your opinion of the "recreation" of the Shining in that?

Here is a shirt. It's black and white though https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Photo-Shining-Horror-Movies/dp/B08TQGJXYD

Love this movie, but for me, The Exorcist is still the crown jewel of horror movies. Watching The Shining now, I just noticed a classic Star Trek toy near Danny while he was eating his sandwich. The Mego Super phaser 2 target game was like laser tag but used a phaser shaped gun (bulked up because of the electronics that were installed) that shot light onto a reflector. Danny has that gun on the table near his milk.

When you discussed Kubrick's other films you should watch Paths of Glory and he also took over directing Spartacus

Also, since Alex is such a big Shining guy, have you guys ever seen the 90s movie "Stir of Echoes" ? It's something of Shining spiritual successor. Something to toss on the catalogue if you've never seen it.

Steven Johnson

Bout tree fiddy?

Steven Johnson

It's certainly a solid horror picture. That's for sure. It's Kubrick, so if nothing else, it is unconventional. All of his movies tend to break the mold in one way or another, whether it's Full Metal Jacket, 2001, A Clockwork Orange... The man has an eye that is unparalled. I feel so bad for Shelley Duvall. She absolutely got tortured on this movie and never quite recovered as a result. Also, of course, Jack's performance is great. If I had a critique? He's a little too intense right off the bat. In the original story it was much clearer that he DID love his family and that what happened between him and Danny was an accident. The bitterness was very small and the presence in the hotel is what made it bubble up and fester. It's maybe the only place the TV movie version does better by the characters. This is a movie I classify as a classic horror film. You can put this thing on in the background on Halloween and just vibe on the ambience of it. Right up there with the original Alien, Halloween, The (origina) Haunting, and Psycho.

Steven Johnson

Nicholson's casting is too much of a distraction for me. I'm just waiting for him to go off the deep end, because that is implicit in his casting in the first place. So I can't see the tragedy of his character. It's like a Rocky/Creed film: how long before the central character gets into the boxing ring?

I looked it up it’s the US cut for sure as the cut I have is 2 hrs 23 mins - the European version with some alternate scenes and several cuts. Damn Kubrick!

Paul Rymer

We say the length of the movie in the video. I’m guessing whatever is standard in US

Josh (Target Audience)

Which cut of the film are you watching? The standard cut in most of the world is quite different to the US version.
