Remember, back then if the first season is short, it's basically because they only ordered a small amount as like a test run. It's not like that kind of season was created like a streaming run. The rule of the era of 25 episodes every Fall means you have a mix of good and bad, and a forgettable episode just gets shrugged off since next week there'll be more. I haven't followed many comments, but I think episode 7 is considered probably the first one that's really good. The whole series remains uneven, but that one will give you an idea of what one of their best shows look like.

Tess’s father was Lance LeGault, who played Maga, the leader of the Borellian Nomen in Battlestar Galactica, as well as Bootes in “The Lost Warrior.”

Well, my point was that QL is a hybrid between the Trek style ensemble cast of multiple regulars and something like TZ where an entire new cast and story is presented every single episode. You can handle each format in its own way but QL's in particular would have had certain difficulties.

I mean shows like the Twilight Zone basically switch characters, writers, and directors every episode. It's certainly a risk, but in a way I think the fact that the show was slotted in for only half a season made it less so. If it didn't work they could just junk it by the next year. Luckily they did have Scott and Dean. Without them it definitely would not work. Dean in particular owns his role.

This show had to have a real hard job. Unlike a good ensemble cast like Star Trek, there's only two persistent characters surrounded by brand new guest stars every single episode, and one of the two characters can't even interact directly with the guests. I think the show overall works because of Dean Stockwell's seedy charisma and Scott Bakula's aw-shucks strength of character, but it sure was a risk to begin with.

For me the best part is the ending. This one doesn't quite do it for me either. I like the actress playing Tess, but... Otherwise it's pretty lame. The next uncut reaction you guys are coming up on is pretty special though, imho.
