Galactica 1980 is more bearable than Star Trek V, and I'll die on that hill.

It's only 10 episodes of Galactica 1980 they could do that standing on their heads. Hey.... you know what...

Rory OToole

So don’t watch it and then you don’t have to think or speak about it at all. Even better. I mean, it’s not even a “so bad it’s good” situation. It’s just bad in a very dull way.

Aramis Calcutt

Galactica 1980 is like what I once read in a tourist guidebook to Hawaii on the subject of poi: “You should try it so you can badmouth it with authority.”

James H

Ironically, the reason the first two seasons were so difficult is why the original show existed at all: Gene Roddenberry.

JD Nevesytrof

Watching Galactica 1980 is the equivalent of throwing yourself on a grenade. I sincerely hope Josh & Alex don't have to sacrifice themselves this way.

I'd stopped watching TNG regularly by the time season 3 started. If it was convenient I'd watch, otherwise I wouldn't make any special effort to see it. Mid-way through season 4 I resumed watching each episode. It really is hard to believe how TNG evolved beyond the first two seasons to become a genuinely successful and very popular show. Without the Star Trek TOS legacy, the first two seasons might have got the show cancelled, or downgraded in budget/time slot.

Another comment. Although I’ve seen all the movies I have overall never liked the movie version of Star Trek. It just doesn’t fit the vibe. The movies tend to have to laser focus on a main character and have that character do a lot of heroic things to pack into 2-3 hours. I think it works a lot better in a one hour format that deeply explores a single problem, mystery, or moral/ethical issue and because it’s weekly you can give characters other than the headliner a spotlight frequently. Red Letter Media described Star Trek’s ethos as “middle aged professionals meeting in rooms solving problems” and while that isn’t it 100 percent of the time, I think that’s a pretty good frame for it. It’s less of young people and adolescents raging against the unfairness of the universe and lashing out and making things explode.

ugh yeah skip 1980 but the new Galactica is superb

AzoriusMage

Nah, Galactica deserves to be seen even at its worst!

James H

I have to say your Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica reactions really got me hooked. I grew up with those shows and although I loved them, they were kind of a wallpaper to my youth so after a while what I noticed most were the cheesy or cringey things and for a long time I couldn’t watch them without those things ruining the experience. Seeing these things through your eyes has helped remind me how the flaws are much less important than how good a lot of this stuff was. I really can’t wait for you to get into some of my favorite stuff like seasons 3-7 of Next Generation, all of Deep Space, and, currently, Strange New Worlds. Maybe you’ll even help me to appreciate the stuff I didn’t like, like the first couple of seasons of Next Generation, and most of Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, and Picard. I would also like to see you compare different phases of Star Trek, like original series/Next Gen/DS9 versus Chris Pine Trek. I would also love to see you tackle the Galactica reimagining after you finish 1978. (For your own sake, please skip 1980. It’s just depressing.)

Aramis Calcutt

If not from the movies, then I expect you'll see a big influx of new subscribers starting about halfway through TNG season 2. There's a hefty portion of the fanbase that loves the franchise in general but finds TOS too dated for their taste.

Jeff Cornell

I rewatched TNG at the beginning of the pandemic. The first two season were better than I remembered. Not as good as Season 3 onward, but still a good amount of solid episodes.

One of the best for sure

Baltar’s Escape… my favorite stand-alone Galactica episode!

James H

TNG starts in October, it's gonna be a heckin good winter

JD Nevesytrof

There's a reason the opposite of Jumping the Shark is called Growing the Beard.

JD Nevesytrof

I look forward to you getting into TNG, but Seasons 1 & 2 are a bit shaky, IMO.

Tom Occhipinti

I already have a reminder to join you tonight for the premiere of TMP. I support you guys, you're awesome!
