I can't imagine the mirror universe overcoming C'quer. They're too busy back stabbing and sexing each other up to think that intently about a problem.

Steven Johnson

Whoah. Just learned that in Star Trek online, Vger has a mirror universe counterpart, Cquer (Conquerer, a probe sent out to discover worlds to conquer). Fun little wiki read right here (no spoilers for main Star Trek canon I promise). https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/The_Other

It's so hilarious that so far "Kirk vs Computer" is Alex's favorite Star Trek movie :D

Andreas Schmitt

VI does have some ties to a certain TNG episode.

Stephen Wright

Other quick piece of trivia is that Chief DiFalco who takes over for Ilia is Shatner’s wife at the time, Marcy Lafferty.

Stephen Wright

I haven’t watched these movies in a long time. Seeing it now makes me realize that I need to get the soundtracks. Especially the first 2.

Terminaldogma01

Hi Andreas ! We both have the relatively uncommon double T :)

John5193

Ah, then you now know that scene was based on TMP transporter accident.

Linda Stricker

Alex, you misremembering names is always hilarious 😀 For the record: the Vulcan ceremony is called Kolinahr. Kandahar is a city in Afghanistan that you probably heard on the news hehe

Andreas Schmitt

They'll watch them, just later. Only 1-4 came out before TNG. They'll watch them during TNG as they were released.

Andreas Schmitt

Hey there brother in name 😀

Andreas Schmitt

Not sure if you (or anyone) are interested in exploring the novels at all in your free time. They can be a bit of a mixed bag. But if you're looking for a good story of what everyone was up to between the end of the series and the start of the movies, "The Lost Years" by J. M. Dillard is worth a flip through.

Avaria

The intention was Kirk turning 50. Harve Bennett had to talk William Shatner into agreeing with the story, because as an actor, he wasn't exactly comfortable shouting "I'm 50!" to general audiences.

tyranusfan

I think this movie holds up very well and I like it better now than when I saw it as a kid. Back then I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate the more subtle ways in which the film expressed its ideas. It seemed very long and muted and kind of very few things happening.

Aramis Calcutt

If you liked the Decker/Ilia dynamic then you might be glad to hear that it kind of comes back in Next Generation with a couple of new characters who echo several of the plot points. And this time it’s allowed to develop over time.

Aramis Calcutt

With a Trekkie buddy we quote the wormhole sequence all the time. “Noooooooooooo! Beeelaaaaaay thaaat phaaserrrrrr orrrderrrrrr!”

Stuart Arbury

We’ve watched Galaxy Quest it’s on the channel and here on Patreon

Spoiler!!!

Linda Stricker

I saw this movie the first day it was released. The excitement in the audience was incredible. People were literally standing and cheering when the Enterprise made its first appearance. I went back and saw it again the next day. Since then, it's gotten some bad press and I understand SOME of the criticisms. However, I think it has aged well, and I've seen it many many times. I certainly don't put it at the bottom of the movies. Around the middle - 3rd or 4th.

John5193

Ah! Now that makes sense. When I was looking at the time table on that I was thinking to myself "Damn these guys are going to rush through em in record time."

Steven Johnson

"But the animal is inside out." "It's inside out!?" "And it exploded." The piece of alien bacon his face makes me laugh every time.

Steven Johnson

Yes, and we know based on the dialogue in TWOK that it can take place no earlier than 2284 because of the Romulan Ale being of "2283" vintage and McCoy's response "Well it takes this stuff awhile to ferment." Which shocked me, because I always thought that TWOK took place relative to the release year of 1982. (2282.)

Steven Johnson

I liked this bit of trivia -- the movie's announcement press conference was Paramount's biggest since the 1923 silent movie The Ten Commandments.

Also, Bones' medallion is abso a Kelley thing. He used to wear big ugly 70s medallions just as part of his look.

JD Nevesytrof

If you ask me, the Decker deal is a lost opportunity because they're dealing with exactly the same scenario and exactly the same possible solution, a massive unknown engine of destruction that they plan to enter and detonate the engines in order to disable. Lots of drama they could have milked out of that, if only they decided to tie in the father-son connection.

JD Nevesytrof

There a few bits of interesting trivia just from the very beginning of the movie. 1. The Klingon captain is played by Mark Lenard who played Spock's father, so he has the privilege of the playing the first Romulan, the first full-blooded Vulcan, and the first re-imagined bumpy-headed Klingon; Roddenberry joked that the true image of the Klingons foreheads did transmit well over 1960s television airwaves. 2. Commander Branch who was the commanding officer of the space station was played by David Gautreaux who was to play the full-blooded Vulcan science officer Xon who was supposed to be part of the new television series when Leonard Nimoy refused to return to the television Star Trek Phase II show. 3. Craig Huxley or Hundley, the musician who created the blaster beam as a massive stringed-instrument for V'ger music and additional music for the next two movies, previously was a child actor who acted as Tommy Starnes in the Season 3 episode And the Children Shall Lead and as Kirk's nephew Peter in the Season 1 episode Operation -- Annihilate! which online shows a deleted scene with Peter Kirk in uniform in Captain Kirk's bridge chair.

We are watching in release order

Josh (Target Audience)

We are watching them all 3 weeks apart from each other. The TMP uncut reaction took a while to release because we had to finish posting all of TAS first. That’s why TMP & TWOK we’re posted closer together.

Josh (Target Audience)

There are some things that they probably should have explained better in the movie. There is so much trivia about this film. A few years ago I just happened to attend a lecture about this film at a convention. I don't remember much about it as I think they mostly talked about the special effects problems. As I remember the story being told... 1. Spock was subdued as he was going through a logic ceremony and not due to Leonard Nimoy, although the script almost completely lacked any humor, so the even humans felt more like Vulcans in this movie. 2. The novelization apparently states that when McCoy was drafted that he was busy hanging around with the Fabrinis researching medical cures from the time he fell in love in the Season 3 episode For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky; Bones fell in love so I guess he is wearing a Bob Guccione gold coin Krugerrand necklace as this movie was created and filmed in the 1970s disco era. 3. This Decker is supposed to be the son of Commodore Matt Decker who died in a somewhat similar insane and doomday machine sacrificial way, although some sources now say that the two characters were not related or directly related.

I liked this movie as well. While I don't think it's the best Star Trek movie, it's still able to capture a part of what made TOS so good: the sense of mystery of what could be out there. The effects also helped and were well executed, imo. Looking forward to more reactions. Btw, are you not planning on watching movies 5 and 6? I think 6 is the best one and I highly recommend it.

Captain Proton

I certainly don't want to be *that guy* because nobody likes that guy, but I am curious about your pace of release here. You did Star Trek TMP and then TWOK almost right away afterward (at least it seemed like it was the very next week) but now it seems you have had a longer gap between TWOK and TSFS. Was that just how things fell into place or was there a reason you had that longer pause? Mostly i'm just curious about your release schedule.

Steven Johnson

Because they're a couple of weirdos. I'M KIDDING! I do get the reasoning. It makes sense, but I would still reiterate Star Trek Vi just is kinda... hanging out there... All by itself.

Steven Johnson

I didn't know that but now that I know, it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the inside info!

Gary Leyh

Thanks, guys. I found Alex's comment about TMP being a character driven movie to be a little surprising. To me, it was an effects-driven movie, period. One of the big complaints of the fans (including myself) shortly after TMP had been out was the characters were almost devoid of emotion or their typical TOS traits. It was also a complaint of the actors. Oh sure, the big 3 each have a few little moments where they seem to be more like their old selves, but in the end, they are all about as sterile and wooden as V'Ger itself. Fortunately the later films managed to correct this flaw.

Collin Freeman

Thank you.

Paul Rymer

52 by the Okuda chronology - though admittedly that chronology ignores the 15 years dialogue in favour of something else (still spoilery so can’t say)…putting TWOK in 2285 18 years after Space Seed.

Dion James Pitman

For "What we got back didn't live long," see Galaxy Quest.

Linda Stricker

I'd say the difference between TOS and TMP in terms of effects is explained by TOS budget of $178,000 per episode at best, and $40 million for this movie.

Linda Stricker

The timeline- there’s 15 years between the end of Season 1 of TOS and TWOK according to dialogue in that film. So somehow there has to have been around 10 years we haven’t seen. I think it’s possible there was a second 5 year mission plus time with Kirk as an Admiral before and after TMP. At the outset of TWOK it’s alluded to Kirk having a “big” birthday - must have been 50 which fits with William Shatner’s age.

Paul Rymer

Sweet, thanks!

JD Nevesytrof

Yes

Josh (Target Audience)

Did you guys film this before ST II?

JD Nevesytrof

A writer once put Spock and his journey in one simple elegant observation: Spock finally accepted he was Vulcan, however, he also realized that sometimes, his human side knew best. As for Kirk, Gene Roddenberry himself explained in his novelization of the movie that after his 5 year mission, he had become so well known, he was the face of Starfleet and they practically forced him to accept promotion, offering a unique position allowing him to still be a man of action. This all turned out to be untrue. Over time his frustration grew, until the V'Ger incident made him confront the head of Starfleet to get back his command. He even thought should he pull it off he would demand permanent command of the Enterprise, but, should he fail, there was no place he'd rather be then that bridge at the end.

Mark Chrisco

I can't recall if it was stated in this film, but the ritual we see Spock about to complete at the start of the film, the Kohlinar, is established at some point as the "Vulcan purging of emotions." And since he's basically just finished, of course he's more distant and closed off. And then he learns he needs them. And, as you've seen in TWoK, set some 7 years later, he is more balanced and dare I say, accepting of himself.

Watching in release order

Josh (Target Audience)

So agree! This is one of the most underrated films I've ever seen. So frustrating how many fans tell reactors to skip it. It's one of my favorite films, Trek or otherwise. The scale, awe, model work, effects, music, and Spock's character arc are just so well done.

Lovok

They are doing everything in release order so Star Trek V will likely be done between seasons 2 and 3 of TNG and VI sometime in season 5 of TNG

Dion James Pitman

Laaaanndruuu... Help me! Helpmehelpmehelpmehelpmehelpmehelpmehelpmehelpme... lol

MertzRocks

I am so happy you guys appreciated this film. You've no idea how for 44 years Trek fans just shit all over this film. This is IMHO the most cinematic and science fictiony of all of the Trek films.

Michael Nemo

I was just wondering why you're not watching all 6 original-cast films before moving to TNG. Assuming you'll move on to TNG films after you finish the series, when do you plan on reacting to Star Trek V & VI?

Linda Stricker

If you like Decker and Ilia, two of the main characters in TNG are based off of them. You'll probably pick up on it in the first episode!

Bret Kay

Great discussion. Have you ever thought about a rating system? I would be interested in hearing how close or far apart you are from each other. Like 1-10?

Jef Etters

Good discussion, some interesting points you raised and it sure was clearly visible the joy you had when watching it. LLAP
