RIP Don Hector

Well, shit. I just looked it up to confirm that the Breaking Bad actor Alex recognized (Mark Margolis) really was him (it was), and it turns out he died just a few weeks ago.

Jeff Cornell

Yes! Absolutely.

Not only that, there's what I call the "Indiana theme", that slow pensive harmonica melody that plays whenever Sam has a flashback to his past or has a tender moment that really shows his real character. It played prominently when he was trying to and talking to his dad back home, and it'll be continued to be used.

Another one of those nice touches, Frankie's dad's wheelchair was definitely how they used to make them. They didn't start to make proper assistance products for disabled people like aluminum wheelchairs until the 70s or so.

Pretty much the only things the episode had in common with the blackout was date and time. The blackout was caused by an overload to the system so I guess the hairdryer was what took it over the edge. I am enjoying it this time around knowing the movies they are borrowing from as a kid I had no idea.

You've probably figured out by now but Don Bellisario had the cheesy but charming habit of taking movies he really liked and very thinly veiling them as QL episodes. It's VERY apparent early on but later some original plots get mixed in.

Technically, if Sam hadn't leaped into the Don, they were both going to die. So it... half paid off. I guess? Maybe it was because I was mobbed out after the last time I watched it, but this episode didn't do it for me the last time I saw it. There are some good moments here. I completely forgot about the double leap. Also the subtle wink at the 1965 blackout is great. Reminds me of Men In Black "This thing caused the 1977 New York Black out. Practical joke by the great attractor. ...He thought it was funny as Hell." As the show goes on it starts to get a little braver. You can really tell early on they were unsure of how far to take the time travel stuff. The next one is great. It's my definition of old-school Liberalism. It plays to the shows strengths. Al tones down his horn-dog persona. Dean Stockwell, when he's given the material, really brings Al to life. He has a hint of Dr. McCoy in him. I wanted to comment on the music for a moment. Have you noticed how the QL theme gets interwoven into the music episode to episode? They tweak it just a little bit for each era.
