Gathering Movie Suggestions
Added 2023-08-25 13:16:30 +0000 UTCAs we finish Battlestar Galactica 1978 we will be getting back to doing more Patreon exclusive movie reactions. More info on this coming soon.
Next week we will run a poll for you to decide the first movie we watch, so we need to gather your suggestions!
There are no rules or constraints on what movie to suggest. If it’s a movie one of us or both of us have seen we will reply saying so, but they do not have to be first time watches for both of us every time.
Comment as many movies as you’d like but please only 1 movie per comment.
If you see a comment for a movie you would like us to watch please like that comment instead of commenting it again.
We will take a mix of the most liked choices as well as ones we find most interesting and use them in the poll next week.

Dang it. Of course Fred Astaire, who played Starbuck’s father, was the biggest star to appear on the show.

2023-08-26 10:09:02 +0000 UTCEquinox (1970), another college film that was picked up by a studio, made by people who would later become pretty big in the industry. One of the main creators of it was Dennis Murenn who has won more special effects Oscars than anyone else and was part of ILM since the beginning so of course he worked on all the Star Wars movies and a lot of other big projects since. He even has a star on the Walk of Fame and is just generally a nice guy. One of the actors later went on to be on WKRP. This movie had to have heavily influenced the Evil Dead movies since it's basically about young people going to a cabin in the woods to see a professor who has disappeared while studying the Necronomicon.

Rob
2023-08-26 01:36:41 +0000 UTCI highly enjoyed your “Buffy” series and your “Galactica” series. I would recommend you go on to do more of “Buffy,” and also the 2004 “Galactica” series. Were it me, I wouldn’t bother with “Galactica 1980.” (BTW Is Alex face blind? It is a rare but real condition. The famous brain scientist Oliver Sacks (“The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”) was himself face blind.) More on Galactica I was nine when Battlestar Galactica came out. Of course Star Wars was a huge thing but I had been watching Star Trek practically from the cradle, so even as a kid I preferred the one I could watch every week or every day after school. I have to say, you guys really should have paid serious attention to the Patrick Macnee narration at the beginning. I can still recite it from memory. It really sets the tone for the story. A great way to get into the right mood for the show. And of course the music is fantastic. That’s something that is really lacking in modern shows. Same with the narration and theme for Star Trek. And then Lorne Greene’s narration at the end was a great way to end each episode. (Aside about Star Trek visuals And I loved the visual look of Star Trek as well. Before they remastered the visuals, the line green shirts worn by Kirk, Sulu, Chekhov, etc., appeared as bright yellow on TV. So even though the costumes were pale green in real life, all the action figures, etc., had them in bright yellow. I loved that palette of bright primary colors—blue, red, yellow. Now that they have “fixed” the visuals so that the bright yellows now are a pale green, it looks so dull to my eyes. And I hate the CGI Enterprise, which has replaced the practical model shots.) But getting back to Galactica, it had been promoted heavily long before it premiered. I remembered you could see the toys on the Sears catalogue—especially the Colonial Viper fighter and the Cylon Raider—many months before the show premiered. And I loved the look of the ships much more than Star Wars. It started as a three-part miniseries, just like you watched. (Later they recut the three parts into a single feature film that was released in theaters after the miniseries had been broadcast and it was quite successful. I believe Count Baltar was beheaded at the orders of the Imperious Leader at the end of that version, and that’s also how the novelisation ended. I also seem to recall that in the novel version, each Cylon Android did contain a small vestige of an actual living organism somewhere within it.) So as an excited 9-year-old, I got our 12-inch black and white TV, and set it up in my brother’s bedroom. It was exciting. I loved the music, I loved the costumes, I loved the visuals. The story was exciting. But … a few minutes in to the premiere, President Jimmy Carter broke in to make a live announcement about the signing of the Camp David Peace Accords. By the time it was done it was too close to my bed time and the night was ruined. Eventually, ABC rebroadcast it and the show became my favorite, but it was very hard to catch. The shows were enormously expensive to produce—the three-part premiere cost something like $7 million—and they had not originally planned to do a weekly series. Just a series of TV movies. There were constant delays and pre-emptions. As the season went on, ABC refused to keep paying the cost of the show, so as the season goes on you keep seeing the same shots over and over again. They cancelled it after one season and eventually brought it back as “Galactica 1980,” set decades later after finding Earth, cutting most of the effects budget. Most of the main cast except for Lorne Greene was unavailable, so the new leads were a grown up Boxey (now called Troy) and his Starbuck stand in Dillon. It was a terrible show and I knew it even as an 11-year-old. Other facts: Lorne Greene was the most famous member of the cast. He had played Ben Cartwright on the TV western “Bonanza” for 14 seasons. Jane Seymour who played Serina was probably the next most famous. She had already had a leading role on a TV show and had been a Bond girl. She had a very successful career on Broadway and in TV movies and eventually starred again in her own series “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” for six seasons. Seymour was quite famous in the 1980s and 1990s and had a more successful career than almost anyone else on the show. She appeared nude in Playboy twice, the second time when she was almost 70 years old. Possibly the biggest name to “appear” on the show was Patrick Macnee, who was the voice of the narrator and eventually the actor portraying Count Iblis. Dirk Benedict, who played Starbuck, became well known after Galactica as Faceman on “The A-Team.” Richard Hatch (Apollo) spent decades trying to revive the show. His version never got made but he got to play a recurring role in the revival of the show in the 2000s. Apollo’s brother Zak was played by rocker Rick Springfield (“I Wish That I Had Jesse’s Girl”). John Colicos (Count Baltar), who had a long career as a character actor, also played the Klingon commander Kor on Star Trek, in the original series and in Deep Space Nine. Series creator Glen A. Larson was a Mormon and he based a lot of the lore in the series on Mormon beliefs, such as the twelve tribes and the lost thirteenth tribe. In the show, each tribe of the Colonies has its own planet, and they were named after the Zodiac signs. For example, most of the main characters are Capricans from the planet Caprica. He also didn’t approve of foul language so he made up the fake curse words “frack” and “felgercarb.” As the show became more geared towards young audiences, they softened some of the more adult elements, like forgetting about Cassiopeia’s past as a “socialator” and pretending she was always a med tech. Maren Jensen’s role as Athena was diminished over the course of the series because of health problems. On the 1978 show, there was a card game called Pyramid and a team sport called Triad, but when they did the remake, someone misremembered and the names got switched. By the time they realized, it was too late to fix it. A lot of the names are from Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Egyptian mythology, which explains some of the ones that sound strange to us, like Boötes and Puppis.

First one is "Murphy's War" with Peter O'Toole, second one is "Colossus: The Forbin Project". Murphy's War is a tale of revenge, with some great scenes that would definitely not be made today the way it was then..(lots of CGI would be required today)...and Colossus is one of a cautionary tale concerning AI that although made in 1970 is very relevant today.

2023-08-25 16:10:34 +0000 UTCIt has a long-ish run time, but one of the most thought-provoking movies I've seen (and I'm 65, and an avid movie-watcher), is "The Cloud Atlas" with Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant (to name a few) playing several roles each. Directed/produced by the Wachowskis.

2023-08-25 15:40:25 +0000 UTCSeconded! I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything else that quite matched the sense of quiet, unrelenting tension that The Abyss captured. Had some really neat practical effects as well.
