EARLY ACCESS - Does the Buffy Season 1 Finale Get Us Hooked? 'Prophecy Girl' REACTION (S1E12)

Passing on Buffy after the first season is like passing on the 5 star steak dinner because you didn’t like the salad.

It's offset by "those two other episodes" that are rated so highly. Biased here, though - S4 is my favorite season and I realize I'm in the 1% that think that...

Ross43

I dunno, though, “that one episode” of Season 4 brings the average way down in my book… 😉

I'd almost argue that every season is the best, just in different ways. Season 1 has the novelty of introducing the main characters for the first time, and the strong 90s campiness has a certain unique charm if you're into it. Season 2 has the highest highs, with several of the most iconic moments of the entire series. Season 3 has the best overall balance of individual episode quality and season long arc quality. Season 4 has the best average quality of individual episodes. Season 5 has the best season long arc. Season 6 changes up the tone and gives us a lot of new angles on things. Season 7 gives us the big epic conclusion.

Pretty much agree with this comment. I've always felt S2 has a lot of really incredible highs but is still saddled with a handful of S1-type episodes mixed in, whereas S3 is more consistently good but doesn't quite reach the highs of S2. Then you've got S4 as the sometimes awkward but occasionally brilliant transition leading into what I feel is the peak of the series, S5, which combines S3's consistency and S2's amazing highs into nearly the perfect season. Everyone has their own favorites, of course, so this is all IMHO! :)

I really hope you continue, somewhere in season 2 buffy grows into itself.

I got the impression they actually enjoyed that scene. I think the "hook" they are referring to is more plot-related. Everything appeared to be wrapped up pretty cleanly leaving little to entice them into starting Season 2. Thankfully, Season 2 has a ton of follow-through and the events of "Prophecy Girl" create a ripple effect that will impact the show (plot and characters) in very fundamental ways, which starts to take shape in Season 2 but reverberates all the way to the final episode of the entire series (7x22).

Damn if you still don't feel any empathy after Buffy's 'Im16 years old, I dont wanna die' speech, i dunno what will hook you to her character.

I agree that I hope you continue watching after season1.

Couldn't agree more. Stopping after season 1 is kind of like stopping after watching a prologue.

Buffy is two different shows with the transition being somewhere in S2. There is disagreement as to exactly when because S2 contains the start of real-Joss but mixed in with (more than a few, but less than several) S1-type episodes. Just when you think you're done with those, you get a reminder. S3 is consistently good after a fairly early toe-stub. Like I've said before, S1 is the Pleistocene of Buffy - necessary but time to move on. Congrats on having that out of the way!

Most shows start strong and end up flopping by the end. Buffy did the exact opposite. 💜

When I originally watched Buffy.. I stopped after the first season. I guess I didn’t have enough interest to continue.. but over the years I keep hearing how great this show was. So years later I decided to give it a go again starting with rewatching the first season.. and my opinion hasn’t changed of that, but wow.. the show had me hooked moving forward and is in my top 10 alongside up there with Firefly, Farscape, and Angel too. It won’t disappoint if you continue..

Regarding this episode, I largely agree with you guys. Most of the episode is very good, but after Buffy gets resuscitated it slides back into typical Season 1 corniness. That being said, with Whedon in the director's chair, you can feel the improvement in lighting, editing, music, and tone -- all a big step up over the rest of the season. These improvements will not leave the show going forward but will only keep going.

Lovok

I already gave my sales pitch in a comment on the last episode, but I will add that you guys should really try to get through one more season before making a final call on this show. Season 1 was a mid-year last-minute replacement with no budget. Season 2 is far more representative of what the show will become and if you're not hooked by the end of that season, which is extremely rare for new viewers, then the show just might not be for you, which is totally fine. :)
