PATREON EXCLUSIVE EXTRA SEGMENT - Worst Star Trek TOS Episodes

Comments

Ah yes I forgot about that role 👏👏

Charles Regazzi Jr

I hear what you're saying, Charles - and Teri Garr was a total smoke show in the 60's and 70's. ❤️ https://wifflegif.com/gifs/473918-young-frankenstein-gene-wilder-gif

Ageed. I thought their depiction of elderly characters was too condescending and being played for laughs, which made it annoying at the least and hard to take their condition seriously.

Collin Freeman

So I looked up “Me, an Empath” on Know Your Meme and you’re right, they’re going to get a lot of laughs out of TNG.

James H

You think the word empath is funny? You're going to get a charge out of Star Trek: TNG. My bottom 5 would be somewhat different, but I do totally agree with And the Children Shall Lead - probably my least favorite. Spock's Brain and The Way to Eden would round out my bottom 3. Not sure what I would pick for 4 and 5, but your comments about your least favorite episodes are certainly valid and I can see why you chose them.

Collin Freeman

I generally agree with your lists but I think there’s something charming about Assignment Earth - ok maybe it’s Teri Garr 😂 but the interaction with the computer, the H bomb cliffhanger…. I don’t know, this is one I can watch over and over. Awesome content guys 👏👏

Charles Regazzi Jr

YOU BOTH SUCK! WTF?? YOU DON’T KNOW A N Y T H I N G! EEEAAARRRGGGJHH! Just kidding. Great choices guys.

Rich Cirivilleri

PPS: yes agreed! Their depiction as old was pathetic. I know ladies in their 80’s who still ride their horses, ladies in their 90’s who still ski. Other men and women who paint, play music and act in community theatre. The late great actor Rosalind Russell write a great book called ‘Life is a Banquet.’ I read it in high school and never forgot it. Life IS a banquet! Partake!!! ❤️your channel!

Diane Lynn

Alternative Factor , Empath, Miri, And the Children blah blah were excruciating! OK I like Deadly Years because I was a teenager with a crush on Chekov lol. Approaching 70 now - never lost my zest for life. My advice (unsolicited lol) is never lose your curiosity and childish play. Play isn’t just for children. Especially not those little jerks in Miri and the children shall blah blah. PS Melvin Belli was not an actor. He was a famous celebrity lawyer, well known for his bluster. He did a few roles for ‘fun’.

Aside from all the bad episodes can we all agree that the music of Trek in TOS (am not talking about the hippies 😆 but the episodic music) really added to the show overall in its style. If was fun and quirky and perfect when it needed to be as well as dramatic, empathetic and sympathetic when it needed to be. A lot was reused especially in other episodes but imagine coming up with new music every week and only having a couple composers doing so unlike other shows in the future. If the music were campy like Lost in Space or 60s Batman throughout then certain moments would've fell flat or not be as dramatic as when Edith is killed in City on the Edge of Forever. Incidentally there are bloopers from TOS that were dug out of the trash so the quality is poor, bad sound most black and white or severely damaged. Not enough to react to but you guys should search TOS bloopers and check it out

Alternative Factor and Empath are the two worst. Please edit this video to reflect that!

Ken R

There are certain things within certain episodes I can't stand but I love the rest of the episode, for example I absolutely love Shore Leave but I hate the neverending fights with Finnigan. It's way too long and drawn out and could've been so much better if once Spock beamed down to see some desire from deep within himself come out. This may sound stupid but bare with me from his half Human/Vulcan perspective and his daily jabs and arguments his would probably be a duplicate but tolerable Enterprise Bridge Crew where there they complied, didn't argue or make fun of him. Again sounds lame but to a Vulcan it is the peace and tranquility they desire just to get through a normal day. I agree with most of your pics but The Alternative Factor is my least favourite of the entire series. Bad acting, bad makeup especially that stupid beard if you can even call it a beard, boring plot and the twisted box leading into the psychedelic fight sequences.

Brad Barter

I like "Assignment Earth" and "The Deadly Years." Reeeee! (I've never "Reeeee'd" before.)

Tom Occhipinti

I actually mostly agree with this list except for the Empath which I enjoy. The children episodes are the absolute worst and instead of the empath the Hippie Episode probably makes my list. Deadly years is not great but I can only say, being over 40 now the episode makes me think more than it used to. Buy its still not one I'd put on any top list.

Andreas Schmitt

The Deadly Years does have that great moment at the end where rejuvenated Kirk shows up and saves the day, with the Corbomite callback and everything. But that’s 5 minutes out of 50.

James H

Oh, absolutely. I had a friend who I used to talk to on the phone and.. MSN Messenger, back in the day.. This was around the time Enterprise premiered, and we were talking one day about things we liked. I, of course, mentioned Star Trek. She says "Oh I hate Star Trek, it's so nerdy... Well, I like Enterprise." The nerd shakes I had to repress. My hormones were already in a rut from being a teenager, and to hear a girl not only besmirch my beloved Star Trek, but then to tell me that she liked the worst thing Star Trek ever produced just... guhhhahhh! But it does just go to show, you can't agree with everyone about everything. And, i've tried to mature in my belief on this. If someone says they like an episode... There's really no reason to argue about it. Another example, of the three JJ Abrams Trek movies, the one I actually really liked was Star Trek Beyond. It felt the most like the original show, to me. ... And that's the one everyone seems to hate, almost neck and neck with STID.

Steven Johnson

It’s a looser remake than the other one but it’s around the same time period

Jonathan

Yeah, Alternative Factor is pretty miserable. Maybe that would make number 6 in a top ten? LOL.

Steven Johnson

There's a remake of The Deadly Years? I know there's a remake of another TOS episode, but I don't remember a remake of TDY...

Steven Johnson

Since so many people grew up with Star Trek certain movies and seasons are part of their childhood and have some fondness for them. TNG season 1 and DS9 season one both have some fondness for me but that’s also because Of what else was going on when I saw them. That’s what makes the Target Audience rewatch so fun. Getting to see an independent perspective not clouded with nostalgia or expectations from things that happen later in the franchise.

Jonathan

Wow, that's amazing they're the same! I mostly agree with your list, though I'm surprised The Alternative Factor didn't make it on there instead of one like Miri. Maybe the comedy value of Lazarus falling off a mountain a couple times is the saving grace lol

Bret Kay

None of your picks surprised me. Unfortunately for you guys you get to revisit The Deadly Years in the remake of it in the future.

Jonathan

Some people are too precious about Star Trek in general. You'll always find that. Deep Space Nine, the first two seasons, there's some great character moments, but there's also a lot of dull padding. Same for the first two seasons of TNG, but there are people who actually love Seasons 1 and 2 of TNG more than the rest of the show. It's all down to taste, and hey, in the tradition of genuine diversity, what makes Star Trek great is there's something for everybody. Said it before, I saw Star Trek The Motion Picture at age 4, and it inspired my first big bursts of imaginations, and some of my most vivid early nightmares, which I can still recall 30 years later. Star Trek has gone on for so long, that there truly is something for everyone. Ethical dillemas, political debates, war, religion, romance, sex, war, existentialism, what are dreams. Action-adventure... Something, for everyone. Alex, don't let anyone tell you different. You change that outro every time. It's your outro, you do what you want with it and you don't let anyone else tell you different. If you want to just say "Later losers" I won't even be offended. "Target Audience. Patrons. We're done." Like the Critical Drinker says at the end of his videos "That's all I've got to say... Go away now!"

Steven Johnson

None of your picks triggered any white hot old man fan boy rage in me so... great work gentlemen!
