UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TOS - The Mark of Gideon S3E16

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard There was close to a live streaming of Odona getting KIRKED but no, it didn’t happen Kirk 11 Chekov 3 Spock 2 Bones 2 Extras: A whole bunch of Dr. Evils wanted to watch. We thought it was Kirk doing the don-key-otee but it was way creepier. The wanted to watch Odona as Kirk exposed his……. Virus, to kill her. YUCK

Prof Moff

I don't particularly dislike this episode, but I understand the criticism of it. Personally I liked Odona's character. I get that she didn't have the greatest chemistry with Shatner to sell the romantic subplot, but overall I think she was a positive of the episode. She lived her whole life in this incredibly crowded world, and goes into this replica Enterprise knowing she's going to die, but she happy to just enjoy breathing room for the first time in her life. I can certainly respect her conviction to do what she feels is necessary, even die to save her people. That said, the whole idea of this planet being THAT crowded is absurd. Where would the food grow? Where do people sleep? For that matter would people even still be having babies if you got a whole crowd watching at any given time? I just doesn't work. The Gideons' response made no sense either. So a condom goes against their custom of preserving life, but assisted suicide doesn't? There were a thousand better ways to execute on the idea. Spock at least is a bright spot in the episode, and I love that even a logical, procedural vulcan can comment on the uselessness of bureaucrats and politicians. Also nerve pinching the one dude and then straight up tossing his friend was funny AF.

Good point, James.

Agree with most of your comments but I think the Ambassadors daughter was meant to be a symbolic sacrifice to influence others. There were definitely a lot of loose ends but as always an interesting concept.

Wow that’s wild timing

Sharon Acker’s death was reported yesterday. https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/sharon-acker-actress-in-point-blank-and-perry-mason-dies-at-87

"I guess I'm supposed to roll my eyes and go, 'ooo female cooking again'."

Brad Barter

That would be Gene Dynarski as Hodin's assistant Krodak. He also played the miner Ben Childress in "Mudd's Women."

James H

The tall bald capped actor with the mustache who beamed aboard the Enterprise will be seen in a first season episode of TNG as a Star Fleet Spacedock Commander in an episode with a binary code as its title 11001001 which now hearing all the beam down coordinates of the Mark of Gideon has my brain filled with numbers 🫨

There are things in space you could call storms. You can have meteor showers, you can have solar flares, which is basically a solar wind storm, and other effects like that. You can actually sail in solar wind (and from what I remember we've already sent a probe out using that tech and are planning some further ones. You literally have a solar sail on those)

Andreas Schmitt

Yeah even as a kid, this didn't make sense.

Firekrys FWO

Wonder if Kirk checked his own quarters. That would be extremely creepy if they managed to duplicate his personal belongings in every detail.

The bureaucratic stuff that Spock goes through is great, but Kirk and Odana have zero chemistry, which kills all of their stuff. The pro-life, pro-sex, and nearly immortal Gideons are forced to find a manner of euthanasia they can morally accept, and this is by means of an infection Kirk had, so they make a perfect mock-up of the Enterprise? That's unbelievably specific, but fun and creepy while the mystery lasts, at least. Starfleet let Gideon have free reign because not doing so would start a war somehow, though Spock defying them in the end did no such thing. I guess Kirk didn't have his communicator because you don't take standard away equipment to a diplomatic function, but yeah, some script problems on this one. A mixed bag, but not bad considering Gene Roddenberry, Gene Coon, Dorothy Fontana, and Bob Justman had all abandoned their own show by this point.

We have seen that timer at the helm at least once before. They show it in "The Naked Time" when Sulu notices his chronometer is running backwards. (It looked a bit different in the remastered version.) The most interesting scene in this episode was scripted but never filmed. At some point Odona was to have an accident where her finger got cut off, and after a few moments we would have seen a tiny replacement finger start to grow in its place. Guess they ran out of time and/or money to do that scene.

James H

Exactly. They found an entire uninhabited planet to put Khan and his 72 people on. Star Trek is all about humanity expanding out into the galaxy.

James H

zzzzzzzzzz. This is about a 5 out of 10, neither here nor there, not good or bad, it just exists to be mediocre. They don't even solve the problem. On to more interesting topics: you mentioned pro wrestling, how about doing a reaction/analysis of a classic match? I'm thinking Wrestlemania 18 Hulk vs Rock; one of the greatest matches ever despite not the most skillful match. From the 60s, The Avengers with Mrs Peel is well worth a look. TNG is meh. It features more modern actors , which means they have less personality than DeForest Kelly. Many of them have none, and the proof of that is stop and think: we've heard Kirk, Bones and Scotty impersonations for decades from people going all the way back to John Belushi. Has anyone anywhere ever been inspired to do an impersonation of anyone from any other ST show?

Ken R

I like his line about diplomats and bureaucrats. Probably the best thing about this episode are Spocks lines in the first third of the episode.

Collin Freeman

This is such a boring episode. Not enough action. Good concept but execution not good. The plot is just too slow and plodding. It would have been better just to have him beam down and we see them take his blood and then they put him in the brig or some weird contraption to take his blood or the disease. The acting is fine. The dialog is not very good because the plot is not. My question is really why did they not let some of the people leave Gideon and populate some other planets? They just stay on Gideon. It makes no sense to have to bring a disease if all they have to do is have some leave Gideon. Spock against the diplomats is awesome. his annoyance is great . Again the idea is not so bad but the execution sucks.

Carl Peterson

Two words: yawn and pissed. This episode just makes me angry - from the fake Enterprise to the Gideon leader. So stupid. Nerd note: co-writer Stanley Adams was the actor who played Cyrano Jones in season 2's The Trouble with Tribbles.

Collin Freeman

58:32 Oh, I think once you guys even just get to the movies (1979 forwards) you'll be beyond most of the cliches of the original show. For example, the big thing that often holds back Star Trek, even the later shows, is the reset button. There are times in TNG and DS9 where that was actually the novelty, when they *don't* hit the reset button and things are allowed to progress. The first time we start to see Star Trek do any kind of an arc is Star Trek II III and IV. They form a trilogy, and Star Trek V and VI play off of some of the elements of those three films. That was completely unintended, by the way, You'll definitely see a lot of the 1960s specific tropes fall away, but others hang on and become traditions of the series. I guess one example would be that Kirk is often in the thick of things, and that doesn't really make a lot of sense in reality, because the captain is a very important role for the ship... So with TNG Gene tried to reorganize the cast a little so that the Captain is more diplomat, and the first officer is the man of action.

Steven Johnson

Spock "The purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis." Great quote. Terrible episode.

Carl Peterson

I think this is the first time I've ever rewatched this episode. It's just rather empty. They try to be creative, and the idea of population is certainly "typically topical" for Star Trek... But I gotta say it just doesn't keep me engaged. We're in the shadow of the show, I gotta say. Savage Curtain, All Our Yesterdays, The Cloud Minders... The rest I can't even really remember. Way to Eden is usually ranked very low.

Steven Johnson

I am so very sorry.
