UNCUT REACTION - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Harvest S1E2

Here is our full uncut reaction to The Harvest

In case you missed our previous announcement about this - after recording this reaction we decided we are going to finish Star Trek TOS over the next few weeks and then we will watch the rest of Buffy Season 1 between TOS and TAS. This is how we plan to do things moving forward. Alternating between a season of Star Trek and then a season of a different show rather than trying to watch too many things at once.

Try to keep in mind that with any new show it takes time to get invested in things and while you may love this show, it is our first time watching it.

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

I agree with most of what's been said here, including your critiques. Obviously you guys know it takes a while for a show to find its feet, and it was also a low-budget mid-season replacement. So, like Jeff said up there, it really starts getting good sometime in season 2, although if you asked me for iconic episodes (at least in my opinion) the first one I might think of off the top of my head is in 3. I imagine that if you keep going--and I think you should--and you're gonna have to if you wanna see Doug Jones lol--there will be a lot for you to like coming down the pike. (You definitely will get views from it.) Any time I rewatch season 1 Buffy it's always jarring to me just how campy it was, although I enjoy good camp. (Not that all Buffy's camp IS good camp, but camp is a fine line to walk, so I don't get too pressed about it, you know?) The show sort of grows with the characters, so as they grow into more serious adult situations, so evolves the show's tone.

How to put this? You know how Star Trek's reputation these days comes largely from TNG in the 90's, and the original 60's series is seen kind of as the dated origin story (though it obviously has its charms)? Well, think of Buffy very similarly. Season 1 is the dated origin story, and its reputation as a truly classic show comes from season 2.5 onward.

Not sure this show has aged very well but it does get better in later seasons

I feel like a lot of people who watched this show did it much later. I had the advantage of watching it as it originally aired. It was a very different type of show back then. I feel like a lot of shows copied some of the aspects of this one. The typical, "oh another one of those shows," when this was the first one to do it that way. Also, it is not all vampires all the time, though there are a lot of them.

This show I never really cared for. The writing I saw had everyone sounding like they knew they were starring on a TV show, with dialogue and speech patterns only someone on TV would use. I guess the term for this is meta, but there are shows out there that are a lot betta. I advise you to move on.

Season 1 has a few good moments, but it’s essential only because of certain events that get referenced or built on much later.

That’s an ironic combination

This aired on the WB network (now the CW) in its very early years when the channel wasn’t even available in most cities, so the lack of gore was from this being on a broadcast network aimed for kids and having a lead in of 7th Heaven a very g rated show about a ministers family.

Season 1 is very rough. The origin story of Buffy was a horrible B movie. When they offered Joss a show they were not happy he wanted to remake the movie and gave him a tiny budget in case it bombed so they made the first season on a shoestring with video cameras. Once the show beat the very low expectations they increased the budget and got effects, stunts and almost a whole new writing staff. Season 1 is just like Supernatural Season 1 it’s monster of the week with the Vampire plot as something to give it a little continuity. Once the new writers got comfortable in Season 2 the show became serialized. I think a lot of fans were like me that found the show in Season 2 and then went back and watched season 1 in reruns.
