EARLY ACCESS - Reacting to Star Trek's Craziest Villains (S3E14)

I’d have liked to see more of the actor in his Captain persona. Can you ever get back into Starfleet once you’ve been Criminally insane?

A nice subtle giveaway of Garth as Spock is the way “Spock” stands there casually aiming his phaser at Kirk’s torso while making a remark about being armed.

I went to a Star Trek convention in the 90s and Yvonne was there. She was talking about this episode and said it was annoying because the green make up would come off on William Shatner while filming the "seduction" scene, and one time she accidentally pulled off his piece and that really pissed him off.

🤣thanks for the laugh, tyranusfan!❤️

I was about to ask how slow your internet connection was...

They recycled a lot of costumes in this episode, the blue guy with the antenna were seen in Journey to Babel along with the alien with a sort of pig snout face.

Nimoy hated this script because he thought it made Spock look like an idiot at the end. That probably explains the detached performance.

If you think "Kirk" was overacting in some scenes, just wait until the final episode of the series, Turnabout Intruder, the last of my Bottom Five. And Marta is green because she is an Orion, just like the Orion vision of Vina in The Menagerie and The Cage. And speaking of The Cage, if you wanted to do a live reaction for the end of the series I think that would be a better choice than Turnabout Intruder, and even though you've seen a good chunk of it you haven't seen all of it.

Marta was played by Yvonne Craig, who was better known for playing Batgirl in the 1960s Batman series. Her appearance was always a highlight of that show, at least in the mind of teenage male viewers. I agree that this is not a very good episode, but I'll put it on every so often for the campiness of some of the lines. Ten more episodes until you finish up the series - not the strongest run of episodes for sure, but there are two that I consider to be very good ones On another topic, after you finish your viewing of Battlestar Galactica, I strongly advise that you react to the 2004-2009 remake. A much more serious take on the concept, and consistently good. It is essential to watch the mini-series before watching the regular run of episodes.

I remember when before it was considered inappropriate to show them on TV, I used to watch the Charlie Chan movies where Key Luke would play Number One Son. Charlie Chan was played by Warner Oland, a Swedish-American Actor. One of the Charlie Chan movies, Charlie Chan at the Opera, featured Boris Karloff

Yeah, you were on fire with the Batman reference. The Adam West Batman series ran during almost the same time period, 1966 to 1968 with an astounding 120 episodes, 4.62 episodes per month. Star Trek ran for 33 months between 1966 to 1969, 2.39 episodes per month, I thought they worked fast on Star Trek, but I guess the studios always thought Star Trek was taking too much time and money. Two of the next few episodes also feature actors known for working on Batman. Julie Newmar who played Eleen in "Friday's Child" was one of women who played Catwoman. Another Catwoman actress will also appear on Star Trek. Too many Batman actors could have made Star Trek too campy if the show had not been canceled. Leonard Nimoy pointed out this episode as a low point in the series as they were reusing previous concepts. I guess I liked this episode more than most. Perhaps it holds up better when first watching it through the eyes of a child. Steve Ihnat who played Fleet Captain Garth died 4 years later at age 37; he was born in Czechoslovakia, and his family fled to Canada to escape the Nazi-occupation, Keye Luke who played Governor Cory apparently had an interesting and important career as he was reportedly even considered for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars a few years later.

Oops. Damned auto dictate. That should’ve read loathed the episode.

I spent 47 years loading this episode. Never watched it. Last year, I watched it for the first time. I really enjoyed it. Soley because of Steven Inhat/Yvonne Craig. They are so over the top and funny. The episode still sucks, but they are great. There was an LP released back in the 70s by some guy who was dumpster diving at Paramount and found a bunch of three-quarter inch magnetic tape reels that said the magic word “Star Trek “ on them, and he took them and he found that he had all of the raw sound takes for about three episodes from the third season. This is one of them, and what he included was a lot of the audio outtakes from the bridge scenes with Doohan, Kelly, and Takei. It’s really interesting to listen to them work out the scenes. And also to listen to James Doohan drop out of his Scottish accent to discuss where things were going wrong. Great stuff. I’ll post the YouTube link because someone downloaded it there.
