Our YouTube edited reaction to Elaan of Troyius will be posted Monday, but you can watch it right now!

In an effort to simplify our thumbnails, we are trying out not using our poses in the thumbnails like we have been. No idea if this will have any effect, but we shall see.

EARLY ACCESS - Elaan of Troyius: The Most Charming Star Trek Episode? (S3E13)

I remember that Hawaii Five-0 episode she was in. She played the daughter of a wealthy industrialist played by Hammer horror actor Herbert Lom, who was their Phantom of the Opera. He was also Inspector Dreyfus in the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies and was is the adaptation of Stephen King's the Dead Zone with Christopher Walken

It looks like actor Tony Young (1937-2002) who played Kryton was at the time married to actress Madlyn Rhue (1935-2003) who played Lt. Marla McGivers in Space Seed. I guess he wasn't going to let another woman slip away from him after losing his wife to Khan. Actually I don't remember Kryton being in love with Elaan, but I guess if they gave him speaking lines that they gave him at least some character development as well.

This was apparently the second episode produced after the second season episode Assignment: Earth as I guess they had to spend a lot of time adding some special affects. This was apparently 1 of at least 4 times that the actress France Nuyen worked with William Shatner. She had a role on the television series St. Elsewhere, but she made guest appearances on lots of shows, including three big Pacific island shows -- Hawaii Five-O, Fantasy Island, and Magnum, P.I. She was briefly married to actor Robert Culp whose next-to-last acting credits were as a voice for Robot Chicken.

I think France Nuyen and Shatner had great chemistry. The title of the episode is a reference to Helen of Troy from mythology who had multiple suitors for her hand in marriage. I am glad you enjoyed the performance of Jay Robinson as Ambassador Petri. He had a troubled career...he started out on stage roles in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and As You like it at age 19. He was noticed by Hollywood and had a supporting role as the mad emperor Caligula in the Robe starring Richard Burton at the age of 23. He was also in the sequel Demetrious and the Gladiators. Unfortunately his quick success in films made him arrogant and difficult to work with and he was arrested for possession of narcotics. He was served a year in jail but could not find any work for 10 years as an actor. He had been in a Bette Davis movie after his early success and she had heard about his problems wrote him letters of encouragement. One of his last films was Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in 1992. Fun fact: William Marshall, who payed Dr. Daystrom in the Ultimate Computer was a a supporting role in as a Gladiator. He was born in my old home town of Gary, IN and played Blacula in two films.

Shatner and France Nuyen had previously worked together in a Broadway play called "The World of Suzie Wong". The two of them did a couple of scenes from the play on a 1958 episode of the Ed Sullivan Show, and the chemistry between them is palpable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19BKU7m2PXQ

Kid me:2 Grown me:7...As a kid Junior high era Star Trek reruns were on every day..some summers it seemed they only played the 3rd seasons one over..and over..and..The Empath like 7000 times..but this one was on the played all the time list and - as a kid I was meh..boring but at least he got the girl .. As an adult-appreciate it much more than I did. Basically a 'bottle episode' all on the ship..all the space scenes were old footage..so, gives them more time for character development. Shatner talks about doing a pretty famous play with the guest star of this episode in one of his books.

Fun fact: The armor worn by the Elasians is made out of plastic placemats. They had to save money wherever they could. Another fun fact: The next two episodes have actors from the 1960s Batman TV show. The next episode, Whom Gods Destroy, has Yvonne Craig who played Batgirl, and the one after that, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, has Frank Gorshin who played The Riddler. Neither episode is a favorite of mine, and in fact LTBYLB is in my Bottom Five. It isn't exactly...subtle. Not so fun fact: Robert Kennedy was assassinated during the filming of this episode. France Nuyen was a big supporter of his, and she was very upset during the filming because of this.

This is a very solid episode. I agree with so much that you both observed of this episode. Both guest actors are fantastic and watching Kirk play out a "Taming of the Shrew" story is enjoyable and showcases Shatner's talents as well. It is great to see Spock and McCoy observe from the sidelines and try to help their friend in subtle ways. Spock gently reminds Kirk that the bridge is not the appropriate play for the Dohlman. McCoy puts his efforts into finding a cure for the tears. Elaan is desperately trying to escape her destiny, to marry a man she does not love and Kirk provides a glimmer of hope. If she could just make him REALLY love her and not his Enterprise.

On the big push to use Klingons, they were introduced because it was felt the show needed a recurring enemy. Now- since it's a different (or nameless) Klingon every time, it undercuts that. Their INTENT was to use Kor, from the Organian episode, but the actor was always busy so it was a different Klingon every time.

This is such a great episode. Not talked about enough.
