EARLY ACCESS - We've Never Been This Frustrated Watching Star Trek (S3E12)

I can see why some people watching this episode for the first time would not like it. It suffers from some of the similar problems that most 3rd season episodes do, one of them being lack of budget, another being people writing and producing a series they knew nothing about. I do not consider it to be a bad episode, but certainly not a good one. I agree with your assessments: some interesting ideas not executed well. It does still have some good character moments with the big 3. However, this episode holds a special place in my heart. This was the very first episode of Star Trek that I ever saw in October 1969 during it's first round of syndicated reruns. In fact, I was not even quite 5 years old yet. And I came in 1/3 of the way into the episode. So you think you were lost? But, there was something about it - the costumes, the guy with the pointed ears, weird looking aliens, the gadgets ... It all sort of grabbed my little brain's attention and like some weird sci-fi train wreck, I could not look away. I was hooked on Star Trek from that day forward.

There's a few nice character moments between the Big Three in this one, but overall, it's poorly written and suffers from lack of budget. Never been a favorite of mine.

Mildly offended by your overly nitpicky reaction and the constant laughing but I can live with it. It's your opinion. I always really liked this one. This is the one I mentioned a couple of times where each of the Big Three shows they are willing to die for the other two. The actress, Katherine Hays, spent decades on As the World Turns, and she passed away a year ago at the age of 87.

I like how the station was only abandoned for 3 months yet looked like 20 years worth of dust and cob webs had appeared. Doesn't the station have an automatic filtration system to at least keep the air clean and free from dust especially since no doors to the surface were open. Perhaps they had an alien form of arachnid or other web forming lifeform issue since they most likely wouldn't have spiders from Earth with them on a soon to be doomed planet.

We’ve had a few comments that this episode is their favorite so it should be interesting once this gets posted 😬

So the Vians were testing the Empath (word ruined further for Alex) for at least 3 months since that's how long since the science team were taken. How long before that were they testing her? Better use of their time would be to send word out into the galaxy that they could only save one planet and ask for help.

Well, I think you liked it more than many people. I think this episode used to be rated as one of the worst episodes. Then I think around 1980 DeForest Kelley told an interviewer that this was one of his two favorite episodes. This sort of forced everyone to reevaluate this episode. Apparently it is sort of a re-working of a weird Outer Limits episode with the same actor and director. It was also one of the few episodes that the BBC refused to air until decades later due to the torture scenes, I think you have to be an adult to have at least some appreciation of the episode. As a kid I thought this episode was weird and very boring. "Kathryn Hays had to be strapped to a board in order to be kept absolutely still while make-up was applied and stop-motion photography filmed the (wound) progression. The few moments that appeared in the scene took eight hours to film." I did not like these Big-3 episodes much as a kid. I wanted to see more of the crew. However, now I appreciate them more. The newer Star Trek series couldn't do 3-person episodes as I think they were essentially forced to used all 5-10 main actors in a series in every episode; those newer Star Trek series seemed to have a lot of boring B-Plot stories that I thought got in the way of the main story due to needing to use so many actors.
