PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - Battlestar Galactica (1978) Episode 12 - The Living Legend Part 1

This episode is like the first thing I purchased from the Itunes store when I got a Ipod Touch (Remember those) when they first came out years ago.

Lloyd Bridges had starred in the 1950 sci-fi film "Rocketship X-M," which was made in a hurry on a low budget but still did well at the box office. Evidently he didn't remember the experience fondly... but maybe Star Wars changed his mind.

I agree this was the best of the BSG 2-parters. Been a long time since I have seen it. They released this 2-parter and the pilot into theaters as movies, and I recall going to see them - in Sensurround Sound! Hahaha! They made Lloyd Bridges out to be an intergalactic General George Patton or General Douglas MacArthur. Vince Edwards was a former so-so TV actor who went on to do a better job as a director. Nerd note: Lloyd Bridges was known to Gene Roddenberry, as Gene had written several episodes for Bridges' TV series Sea Hunt. Roddenberry approached Bridges for playing the role of the captain of the Enterprise for his new pilot, Star Trek. Bridges response: "Gene, I like you, but I've seen science fiction and I don't want to be within 100 mile of it."

Collin Freeman

In terms of the actors, he was 65 and she was 27... quite a gap, even by post-G.I. Bill standards.

Baltar's acting is a delight and gives some nice balance to a show that should not take itself too seriously. Let's not mention the cringe discussion scene between Cassiopeia and Cain best left in the 70's but a good episode.

Picked a hell of week to quit glue sniffing

Thirties Flash Gordon is an essential source text for Star Wars.

This episode was great - my 12 year old self had pretty good judgement. I remember that the next several episodes were my favorites. It may be hard to explain to how big this show was back in the day. First Star Wars was a unique phenomena - the cultural impact of Star Wars was like nothing I've experienced since. It changed American attitudes toward SciFi. Battle Star Galactica was the movie knock off of Star Wars, and we just couldn't get enough. It could have been bad and we would have watched it - but it wasn't. This show to a 12 year old was like getting a new Star Wars movie every week(there were no Disney sub series back then - there wasn't even a guarantee of sequels). I now realize the characters are better versions of Saturday morning cartoon heroes and villains. The heroes were brave and wise to teach kids lessons and the villains always over-acted/over the top bordering on silly. Baltar absolutely falls into this category - he is a classic 70s kid show villain. If you want to see an over the top villain of this type search for "Lidsville" on youtube. Watching this show for the first time since the 70s is fun. It is good to see it has done a reasonably good job of staying watchable. Has either of you ever tried watching an episode of the 1930s Flash Gordon? Hey, the 1980 Flash Gordon movie would make for an interesting watch! The Queen soundtrack makes the movie worth watching all by itself.

Very good episode. Like you I can’t think what’s going to make up a whole other episode (and can’t remember) but I’m looking forward to seeing it again.

I am all caught up now for the episodes that you have watched by the tubitv.com feed. (It sounded like you said it was on youtube, but I found it.) I was sort of a big fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. I remember watching a lot of it when it originally came out. I caught up with it again about 15 years later as a young adult when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel over 30 years ago. That must have been around 1990 to 1992. In some ways 1978 Battlestar Galactica is more of a kid's show than I remembered; television did not want controversy back then. About the only world-building science fiction TV shows before it were probably Star Trek and Space 1999. Based on the popular movie, Logan's Run came out the year prior in 1977, but it only last 14 episodes. Also based on the popular movie and running only 14 episodes was the Planet of the Apes television show from 1974. If you have seen those movies, those two short series might be worth watching as there are only 14 episodes each. I think one rating book rated this Battlestar Galactica episode as about the best episode. It is sort of the mid-point of the series. The show seemed to change slightly after this episode as I remember, but sadly they just weren't able to get that second season.

Oh yeah, also, the reason for the extra shot of Apollo and Boomer re-holstering their weapons was just an editing necessity. In the medium shots, they didn't draw their guns at all... that was only added in as a closeup insert. But after the red alert goes off, Apollo raises his gun hand up into the frame and it's empty, so they had to add in the other closeup for continuity.

The Patreon player works pretty well. Took a few to get used to it, but I like it. Approved!

Also in the background is the fact that Cassiopeia was a “Socialator” (read: Companion of the Inara variety) when she knew Cain before. This is mentioned obliquely in a deleted scene, but otherwise you just kinda have to remember that fact.

I love how Alex always starts out being all, “Now, where the hell were we??”

As the Colonial Warriors Egyptian style helmets light up I believe it is a forcefield that contains their oxygen without which the cockpit has no or little oxygen especially if the canopy loses pressure, his helmet most likely is doing the same function instead of just confirming which side he is on 😆

Lloyd Bridges was a veteran actor by the time he was on BSG. Both of his sons have become famous actors in their own rights. Jeff Bridges has been acting since the early 70s with numerous film roles including Tron (which is a Disney sci-fi classic and I hope to vote and react to on the channel if you're interested), Tron Legacy, Arlington Road, The Big Labowski and dozens of other romantic dramas etc. Beau Bridges has also been in movies including with Jeff and Lloyd. Beau is mainly known for his TV credits including Stargate SG1 as the commanding officer. This is one of my favourite episodes of BSG. I couldn't wait to see your reactions to not only Baltar and Lucifer making an appearance but to his battle helmet and of course the Cylon's and Baltar's reaction to the Battlestar Pegasus encroaching on them. Baltar exclaiming, "turn you fool!" (Incidentally the person within the I.L. series (Lucifer, Spectre etc) have their real face in the dead center of the android chest, there is mesh there allowing them to see especially since the head is a ball of lights it is the only way that that works) You may or may not have noticed that the normal line Lorne Greene generally gives at the end of every episode was deliberately cut here where as Adama he would end with, "fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last Battlestar Galactica, leads a ragtag fugitive fleet on a lonely quest; a shining planet, known as Earth." Since it was no longer the last Battlestar to exist and the audience has no clue how the Pegasus will fit into the show they left that out. Will the Pegasus remain with the fleet with two Battlestars from this point forward? Who knows....

I agree it is the age she means. Horrible thought. Cassie is like early twenties here. Lloyd Bridges did movies in the 30's. His movie career was twice as old has she was. I am all for: what you like is you but ....... gotta have a limit

Prof Moff

I think when Cassiopeia says "I could be your daughter as well," she's only referring to the age difference between herself and Cain and how that might be fueling Sheba's resentment.

James H

I've heard that John Colicos got a burn on his forehead from the little light bulb in that helmet. Ouch.

James H

Same here, I usually put YouTube in theater mode, which isn't possible on Patreon. But not a huge deal.

James H

This is a great two part episode. I haven't seen it in years, but it's one of the more memorable for the characters being realistic. To your question on Format - I usually watch these in two browsers side by side on one monitor with the reaction playing in one and the episode playing in the other. A minor thing, but on Patreon the side bar on the left and the tier list on the right don't collapse so the video gets squished in the middle. Normally I just cilck the Youtube link and watch from Youtube because I can get the video to be the full width of the browser (1/2 screen). Just a minor thing, but Youtube has a slight edge for me there.

Bret Kay

I love this one and the next. Lloyd bridges long career like Loren Green. Baltar and the "hat", "helmet" "what is on his head and why?" lol. you asked about issues and I can adjust to using this format and not the you tube way. It is fine with this because they are at same speed but a couple of other things what I watch is at a little different speed and this format does not allow a speed adjustment (unless it is something I do not know). Star Trek is one. I have to adjust speed to synch that one (and kinda go back and forth between normal and 1.05). But as I said I can adjust if this is easier for you. oh yeah I am required to say something mean........ Lloyd Bridges has way to much hair for an old guy but I like the Cassie struggling between him and Starbuck "as if" in real life. Sorry to good of mood to say anything "old man angry" as I usually am.
