EARLY ACCESS - First Time Watching Star Trek The Original Series - And the Children Shall Lead S3E4 | REACTION

I have noticed that. Also Barbara Babcock who played Mea 3 in 'A Taste of Armageddon' also played Parmen's wife Philana in 'Plato's Stepchildren', and also did the voice of Trelane's mother in 'The Squire of Gothos', though uncredited. Please someone let me know if I missed another role...

By the way: did anyone notice the actor (Craig Hundley) playing Tommy Starnes is the same kid who portrayed Kirk's NEPHEW in "Operation Annihilate!" ....? Alex's comment a week ago is right on in his observation that many actors were called back to 'Trek to play other roles, or in some cases, reprise previous roles/characters. (Happily in some cases such as Harry Mudd, among others.)

This story was described, by Marc Cushman's book "These are the Voyages TOS Season 3" as one where the dominoes began to fall, and they kept falling throughout the entire production of this episode. The biggest mistake was hiring a non-actor (actually, he was a Hollywood court judge) to play the bad guy. It was a case of somebody knew somebody at Paramount. There were too many "falling dominoes" discussed in the book to put here. Suffice to say this story was SUPPOSED to be an allegory about the dangers of cult leadership, and after so much "watering down" of the script, and so many other issues, it turned into 50 minutes of mush. (Cushman's multiple production diary pages, which are longer than many others in the book's back-story of how every episode was made, go into extreme details of what actually happened to turn it upside down.) Even TV critics of the time said so about what they viewed. There are some good parts (the UFP flag seen for the first time, or Nurse Chapel with the children and getting them ice cream). But too much was just diluted from what was first intended, and it simply went bad. The dominoes fell - and with a loud thud. I for one would love to see the original drafts of the story to see what was hoped for and what was first presented; that might be a terrific read. Guys, THIS is the episode I mentioned a month or so ago that I wouldn't spoil, but when you saw it, I'd post the back-story of what was intended, and how sometimes Hollywood can screw up a good thing - like an episode of the amazing series "Star Trek."

At several points, this episode could have been solved with a phaser or the ship's intruder control system (seen way back in Space Seed). Just sloppy, lazy writing.

tyranusfan

Did you transport her into space as punishment?

I've always said that even the worst episodes have at least one...good thing. For this one I think it's interesting seeing the fears of the bridge crew. But still, my least favorite of the series.

KatWithAttitude

This isn't the two beamed alive into open space but the red shirts who were still on the surface awaiting to have their shift end and took over by by "red shirts in spaaaacce!" (Sorry a little Pigs in Space title reference 😅)

I introduced Star Trek to my daughter when she was young and she loved the series. Unfortunately, she liked this episode too much. Her favorite was Tribbles, but she would still watch this one too often. Annoyed the crap out of me.

Congratulations! You made it through the worst episode. Sit back and enjoy! There are still some iconic moments ahead.

We watch it off the DVD files now, but even when we watched in on Paramount+ we used the ad-free version so it would’ve been the same result. As Colin mentioned, your best bet would just be to pause us and resync after the ad break if you have to use that version

Josh (Target Audience)

Hey, what about the two guards left marooned on Triacus?

Mark Chrisco

I couldn't stand to watch this full episode in the Uncut Reaction. I decided to wait until the YouTube reaction video was posted. Still painful to watch. Definitely one of the worst episodes of TOS.

Collin Freeman

I think they switched to old DvDs. I watch on the lower-paid Paramount too, which has commercials. You can pay for a higher tier Paramount and get it without commercials. I pause the Alex & Josh commentary during the commercials.

Collin Freeman

Hey, what platform are you guys watching the episodes on? I was trying to sync up with you guys on Paramount+ but the ad breaks made that impossible.

Steven Johnson

Perfectly.

The thumbnail tells the story. 😂
