EARLY ACCESS - First Time Watching Star Trek The Original Series - Spock's Brain S3E1 | REACTION

Comments

I'll repeat what I noted above: I AM SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR at how YOUR perspective of "Spock's Brain" was so unique and honest, it completely altered my own perspective on this episode's value and place in the 'Trek universe. Please, please keep going!

I just watched your First Time Viewing of "Spock's Brain," and WOW was I surprised at how much "production detail" you noted during the viewing. I bring that up as it INSPIRED me to consider a lot of that episode in a new light. Since I've watched TOS over the years, this story and others in Season 3 have not - in my humble opinion - lived up to the premise of what 'Trek is, however, YOUR first time seeing it brought a new perspective, and it changed the way I see the episode. I didn't dislike or even hate it before; I only felt some disappointment in the action-adventure / exploration nature of Star Trek, but still enjoyed how the characters remained true to established history of previous episodes. You may find some "stinkers" in some of Season 3's episodes, and some true stand-outs (and there are many TERRIFIC episodes of Season Three!). I look forward to your reactions to those, as well as the so-called "stinkers" which are yet to come on your list to watch. I'll bet I'll come away from your viewing of THOSE with a whole new enlightenment for them, too. I'm SMILING from ear to ear as I type that sentence! MEANWIHLE, may I recommend the book series "These Are The Voyages" by Marc Cushman, which shows extreme details on the entire original series' production with notes on how many stories changed drastically from first draft to aired episodes, and also how NBC kept short-changing the budget, lowering it all three years of TOS. Then, the books (1 for each season!) aliso go into some detail of the time when LUCILLE BALL sold Desilu (production company for TOS) to Paramount next door on Melrose Ave. - they knocked down one wall and then there was just Paramount, which had no idea what properties they had with Star Trek and Mission Impossible, shot by Desilu parallel to 'Trek. These books tell ALL, and Chapters are for EACH EPISODE. Those details include such categories, shown in great historical detail, as Episode #s and their changes due to production issues, NBC press releases, Sound Bites, episode Assessments from multiple perspectives, "The Story Behind the Story" (how every episode came to be - in excruciating detail with full production notes on the initial pitch, story drafts, and so on), Pre-Production diaries, actual PRODUCTION diaries, Post-Production details (such as special effects houses and budgets,, and MUCH more), network release notes with network, TV Guide, newspaper and public reactions to first-runs of each episode, FULL Nielsen Ratings charts (TOS was often FIRST or SECOND in ratings throughout the entire run of the show - until Season Three was placed on Friday nights at 10pm), and a "Memories" segment often showing comments of episodes by Directors, Guest Stars or others on how they felt of said episodes. I HIGHLY recommend these for your book shelf / library, as there are MANY TOS stories that changed dramatically from their original intended story-lines that were made due to drastic NBC budget cuts. One episode you have yet to view (which I will not name until you've seen it) was altered so badly (according to this book series) it had little or nothing to do with what the writer had put to pen - all thanks to MONEY issues from the Network. EITHER WAY, I LOVE what you guys are bringing to the table for all of us long-term fans, as it offers a totally new, 21st-Century, perspective on a show filmed half a century ago: it's FUN and EYE-OPENING for those, who like me, love Star Trek and have even written episodes for sequel series which I hope you will continue to explore and enjoy (TNG, DS9, VGR, ENT, DIS, PIC, and so forth). Hey, guys, WELL DONE. Please keep going, and may you both LIVE LONG AND PROSPER.

One of the things I love about Season Three is the music. They introduced a whole knew palette of melodies and orchestrations in S3 that delight me, as well as re-using some (like Apollo's trumpet call) that work especially well for certain moods. I loved Season Three when it first came out, because, by that time, I was an eight-year-old kid who was totally gaga over the series, and each new episode was an adventure for me. The only episode I really hated when it first came out was "Turnabout Intruder."

I so much appreciate your sometimes-contrarian opinions on various episodes, because they teach me to re-think my own long-held views on these shows. It's easy, when one first saw an episode literally 55 years ago, to get so "set in one's ways" about it that an original thought never really enters the mix. Then you fellas come along and point out things, both good and bad, that I hadn't considered before. You don't always convince me, but it's refreshing, it's enlightening, and it's fun.

David Gerrold described this episode as "high camp." For many years, in moments of exasperation with each other, my wife and I would turn to each other and shout, "Brain and brain! What is brain?"

Ken Schneyer

Yeah, third season was blue titles. :)

I remember Doohan commenting on how his new hairstyle "looked like hell". It was done that way in makeup, apparently a directive from the production staff. After complaining, all actors (except obviously Nimoy) were allowed to wear their hair in the style they preferred as long as they kept their pointed sideburns.

I think I know the episode you mean. I always thought someone latched onto the descriptions of how a Vulcan is "supposed" to be and turned it up several notches. It's my least favorite part of that particular episode, which otherwise I kind of like.

Overall, the 3rd season has a different vibe than the other two. It seems to me at times to be more talky and having a lower energy like the actors aren't giving their best performances. My son even mentioned how Spock is acting like a dick to the others in an upcoming episode. Maybe it had something to do with the fact they knew cancellation was likely this time after avoiding the axe the first two seasons.

Don't know if you ever saw it, but I did post about Scotty's unfortunate Season 3 hair a couple of times. When it comes to Season 3 you could almost call TPTB "The givers of pain and delight". And the credits are only blue for this season. I also posted earlier that Season 3 has two weddings. You'll have to wait to see who. And this was never one of my least favorite episodes of the entire series since it has a lot of goofy charm. My most hated episode is yet to come.
