UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E3 The Changeling

Comments

I get a laugh out of Nomad's description of Uhura's "chaotic mind". Like damn, back in the 60s even the robots were sexist🤣

Timothy Nikiforovs

Couldn't have summed it up better. Shatner and Nimoy try to save it, but the whole episode comes across like a bad fanfic

Great points!

I agree with you that Leonard Nimoy's acting in the mind meld scene with Nomad was excellent, but at the same time it's also the scene that makes me cringe the most. Vulcans are one of my favorite species in Star Trek, and the mind meld ist special and really something cool about them. However, in my opinion, as the name suggests, it's supposed to be a MIND meld. A computer or machine doesn't have a mind ... so there should be nothing for Spock meld with. They took it too far there imo. Surely, a Vulcan mind meld is more entertaining than simply drawing the data from the hard drive or something, but I dislike the scene very much for that reason. Also, kinda in the same notion as you mentioned Janice's sexual assault being dealt with lightly at the end of the episode The Enemy Within, in this Nomad episode, they make some REALLY tough choices that ultimately are impossible or at least very hard to believe. Like, Nomad can bring back humans to life. How the heck? That's just not well thought out. Also, Uhura, they made the choice of something very impacting on her... and then just fix it in the end with "Oh, we just re-educate her" and later it's like nothing happened... I wish they would have been more careful with the severity of the choices they made there and make it more believable.

I agree episode 3 is a forgettable episode BUT 7 of my all time favorite episodes are in season 2 starting with the the next one episode 4. Some of the touchstone moments of this series are yet to come in this season and I can't watch to watch them again through your eyes.

Mike S. aka Peaky Blinder

Yes we have some very good or very “memorable” episodes coming up and this episode and the next one are some of the better Uhura episodes so that was a good coincidence in timing

Jonathan

If they avoided anything because people told them it was bad, they wouldn’t have watched The Alternative Factor and missed one their biggest laughs from the show “AAHHHHHH!!”

I haven't watched this episode(or Gal. 7) for20 years - 'nuff said. It wasn't as bad as I remembered it - but like the guys I got disinterested pretty quick. Whoever made the comment that you can now skip the first TOS movie is SO true. I guess the ending is different but come on - be a bit more creative. Get ready guys - 2 of the next three episodes are award winning and the third one has a good pace that keeps you engaged - with a few laughs.

Here's something interesting I learned recently. The guy in the computer still image of Jackson Roy-Kirk is actually the director of this episode. They needed an image of someone and he opted to get dressed in the clothing of Roy-Kirk and struck a pose.

Thank you for sharing that. Mirror, Mirror is my personal favorite episode and I did not know that the actor who voiced Nomad was in it. Now that you told me though, I know who you're talking about. Thanks for the info!

I know you filmed this prior to Nichelle Nichols passing but it was a great episode to watch in her honor. She was so good in it. RIP. Honestly, she was the best part of the episode for me. Also, the next episode is my personal favorite. I suspect one of you won't like it for a specific reason, that's okay, but I love it so much and am really looking forward to your reaction! Keep up the great content!

Gary Leyh

This episode is a situation that happens many times especially in season 3 when they massively cut the budgets. They have to save money so no new sets limited effects and they give it to a new writer to the show and see what they come up with. Unfortunately you have some episodes like this to pay for better episodes later on.

Jonathan

The navigator you said looked familiar you have seen before. He is actually in 60 episodes. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t notice after 35 years of watching this show I never realized that either until the actor’s obituary last year

Jonathan

Keep it real. There are plenty of fans that find some fundamentally dumb things in this episode. Uhura being re-educated. Nomad checked on Kirk and still didn’t figure out he’s the wrong Kirk. I guarantee you there are CERTAIN episodes that are fun and exciting but there are average to below average episodes mixed in there. Part of this journey is seeing the good, the bad and the ugly. This is why hyping up a season is dangerous. Just go expectations tempered and you’ll be ok. FYI nothing in Trek is as bad as The Star Wars Holiday Special.

BURKE Wells

If no one has mentioned it yet - Nichelle Nichols(Uhura) passed away yestrerday.

This story would get recycled later for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, along with a few other episodes. If you think you were bored watching this episode ....Kirk vs computers is a trope they revisited several times throughout the series, unfortunately. Nomad was moved on a wire out of camera view. The voice of Nomad was done by Vic Perrin who did several voices in Star Trek over the 3 seasons. You will see him at the beginning of the episode Mirror, Mirror. He was an active character actor in the 1960's and did the voiceover opening for the sci-fi TV series The Outer Limits. Nichelle Nichols had some great moments in this episode. So sad she is no longer with us.
