UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E1 Amok Time

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Shockingly, no real new scores. Kirk 4 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extras: I have to be honest, I just thought there would be a score here but no. I mean it is a Pon Farr ep which IS about sex however, there is no sex. I guess we can give T'pring a +1 for the Wa'Bangin with Stonn that is about to (and clearly already) happen. We could consider T'pau a +2 or 3. You can't tell me that a rich powerful older woman is not using those muscle heads for more than just enforcers. But no adds for Spock or anyone other main crew.

Prof Moff

Lemme just translate what Spock said to Stonn at the end. "You can have her, but I'm telling you bro, she's for the streets"🤣. I mean, yeah her decision making process was logical, but also incredibly unprincipled. She's willing to see either Spock or Kirk die so she can be with her side piece, and flat out says even if Spock went through with the marriage, she'd just take his house and his 2238 roadster and cheat on him anyway. Most romulans are more principled and loyal than that. But in contrast to that, Spock gets to see his loyalty to Kirk over the years returned with interest. Being willing to sacrifice not only his career, but his life to help his friend. Also liked how after Spock explained the situation, Kirk said "I haven't heard a word you've said". As far as I'm concerned, despite the continued banter especially with McCoy about his human half going forward, this is the point where Spock learned to appreciate the positives of his human half. He starts the episode so reluctant to talk about the pon farr at all, and in the end it was Kirk, McCoy and Chapel who were the most supportive of him. It's an interesting dichotomy that the logical, unemotional vulcans have such a primal aspect to their culture. Pon farr is is presumably just a biological drive to mate, and probably isn't naturally life threatening, as that wouldn't make a ton of sense evolutionarily. However Vulcan culture being what it is, with the suppression of emotion and arranged marriages, they've basically built their society in a way that fights their biology, which is pretty illogical to think about. I mean I get that before their turn to logic vulcans were a pretty violent lot, including as discussed in their search for a mate. But they basically just formalized one of the most barbaric expressions of their old ways. Seems it would make a lot more sense to just pair up a couple vulcans going through pon farr to satisfy their urges, assuming they're not already married. Then again, it's quite possible that 99.9% of the time, someone in Spock's case would go home, get laid, and there wouldn't be a challenge at all. What we saw may be a rare event that only occurred because T'Pring is kind of a bitch. As far as Kirk being overconfident in going up against Spock, it's true vulcans are stronger as we saw in This Side of Paradise(and in this episode). It's later established they're about 3x as strong. Spock is half human, so split the difference and say 2x as strong. Kirk has perhaps earned the right to be confident about those odds given he beat Khan in a fight, and he was a lot stronger than a vulcan. Iconic episode for several reasons.

Timothy Nikiforovs

This episode is in my top 10 favorites of TOS. Nerd trivia: Altair 6 ... sound familiar? Like Altair 4 (Forbidden Planet)? I love that connection. Celia Lovsky (T'Pau) was married to the classic movie actor Peter Lorre - her accent was real. Leonard Nimoy invented the Vulcan salute while filming this episode. He thought there should be some form of greeting between Spock and T'Pau, so he threw in a hand gesture he remembered as a child in Jewish temple the priests used - it is the Hebrew symbol for the letter "shin", which is the first letter in the name of Shaddai, which is a Hebrew name for God. The music score is also classic.

Collin Freeman

Josh, you asked for more Spock - well you got your wish! I was dying to hint at it but suppressed the urge like a good Vulcan. I was sure Josh was going to say it was his favorite episode at the end. This is a top 5 for me - my favorite part is that McCoy saved the day - he outsmarted the Vulcan ritual. To me this episode solidifies the big three.

Ricky Johnson

So, just for information, when they decided to release the original series on blu-ray, they spent a lot of time "cleaning up" the footage. They did a lot to make the footage look nice in HD. Also, they updated a lot of the special effects. The opening sequence was completely redone, and in this particular episode, the far away shots of the Vulcan planet are completely updated CGI.

Enjoyed your reaction guys. This an iconic episode. One of the most homaged fight scene from Star Trek. If you want to see one of them on YouTube just type in “Cable Guy Star Trek” Jim Carrey fights Matthew Broderick. The music alone gets used in parody fights. BTW, season 2 has some truly beloved iconic episodes in the entire Trek franchise. I want to see you guys get 10,000 Patreon subscribers. LLAP.
