Stranger Things S5 Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up

Great reaction. I had no idea the episode was so long when I sat down to watch it, I cant believe we've been with these characters for nine years, I was 21 when it first started feels like a life time ago now. This is the first show I've watched where I followed along with the characters as it came out so I loved that we watched them grow up it really did feel like saying goodbye to friends, I cried a lot it was an exhausting few hours. I love that they showed us all the characters lives knowing that they all have each other it was a great way to end it.

It's hard to beat season 4. It was truly epic and well done. But season 5 was still great in my opinion. I had its issues, but it was still fun. I think the ending was good. The final fight was absolute nuts! Yeah there weren't demos, but I didn't miss them. And all the character arcs were wrapped up beautifully. As for El's, they gave us a choice. I feel like her sacrificing herself is totally in-character for her. But I'm also fine with Mike's theory. I think in the long-run Mike and El would have the same issues as Nancy and Jonathan. Too much trauma-bonding. And teenage love rarely lasts for a lifetime anyway. So I absolutely loved the ending and even after a half dozen rewatches I still have the tears and snot to prove it!

I highly recommend the 'Making of Season 5' documentary that dropped earlier this week on Netflix. If you haven't already watched it, I mean. It gave me that welcome extra fix... incredibly interesting to see behind the scenes... and it was emotional (again) to watch everyone filming their final scenes.

the actress of robin looks so much like her mother - i mean that not surprising ofc but still, you immediately know who her mom is in real life

We know El used her powers to speak to Mike in the black void, and every single time she uses that power she gets a nosebleed. The El we see standing in the gateway never has any blood coming from her nose, proving that it is not really El standing there. We also see that El is sitting right next to Mike the moment before they drive through the gate, and then the soldiers are covering the opening from the moment it opens. If you really think she could sneak out and run over to the gate without anyone noticing I don't think you are using your brain at all. As much as they want to say it is up for interpretation, the evidence is there if you are really paying attention.

Let’s go!! Can’t believe this is the finale, stranger things has been such a fun journey to be on. So bear with me here, I’m not sure how to word this comment without getting jumped by people in the comments lol but I’ll try. Almost everything about this season has been great, the visuals, the story, most of the acting. I loved Will the most this season for sure, he’s always been a favorite of mine. Nancy just became a straight up badass, they don’t call that family the “walk em down wheelers” for nothing. Derek and holly also ended up being amazing characters for only just being introduced. My only complaint is the emotional payoff from Mike and Els relationship. Personally I’ve never really found them that good together as a couple, I mean Eleven could barely form a sentence and didn’t even know what the word friend was when they got together that’s not as wholesome as the writers seem to think. Their final kiss goodbye just felt uncomfortable to me like they didn’t want to be there. They haven’t had proper chemistry since like season 2 but this season was way worse there was nothing with them until that finally scene. El deserves better than a boyfriend that needed a full season arc to say “I love you” then in her final moments still couldn’t say the words like bro tell your girlfriend you love her in her final moments. I heard someone say that the reason El chose to speak to Mike instead of Hopper, Will or Max was because she knew Mike was the only person who couldn’t convince her to stay, its funnily accurate. Anyway that story Mike told about El is what he thinks happened, since its up for interpretation i do in fact think El is dead but it’s nice to think she’s still out there. Sorry for the long comment, I love you guys can’t wait for whatever series comes next!

Funny, I am also the Class of '89 too!

I think that's the beauty of it actually, the fact that you can interpret either way. If you want to believe, there's a lot of reason that you can. If you don't, there's reasons for that too.

I didn't really see it as El being pessimistic. Just realistic. Because Kali wasn't wrong.... the gov't or military would never stop relentlessly coming for their blood, particularly El's. So whoever lived with her... it would always mean running, hiding, and danger. I think there is wiggle room in both interpretations of whether 'portal El' was an illusion or not. The biggest indicator of it being an illusion was not the emitters... especially as there's no proof that they are effective thru the portal... but that 'portal El' had no nosebleed after pulling Mike into her mind for the goodbye. (Her fingers did not glitch in the actual scene. That was Mike's fancy.) But there are also tremendous reaches in Mike's theory... with so much hinging on Kali living long enough to create & hold the illusion, at a distance, knowing exactly when to start it, and sustaining it even after the C4 detonated above her. Perfectly ambiguous.

I'm boycotting. If I don't watch this reaction, it's not technically over, lol.

season 4 is a masterpiece for me but the entirety of this show is good and the ending got a lot of unnecessary hate... could it have been better? Of course, everything can, but bad endings and bad seasons are certainly not THIS. I just think once the discourse is negative, it's easy to jump on the train and look for everything that's bad Overall ST was a brilliant show that I'll always cherish and rewatch and it was awesome to enjoy it with R&T

In a wonderful callback... Dustin fulfilled exactly what Eddie had said (in 4x01) that he was going to do at his own graduation. Eddie: "... I’m gonna walk that stage next month, I’m gonna look Principal Higgins dead in the eye, I’m gonna flip him the bird, I’m gonna snatch that diploma. I’m gonna run like hell outta here. ... This is my year."
