Jon Bernthal has said that Frank Castle lives in his bones...and it was always important to him to do the character justice. From things I've heard himself and others (like Deborah Ann Woll...Daredevil's Karen) say, he would go toe to toe with the directors and such to make sure he got it right/wouldn't just blindly go along with something if it didn't make sense for the character...and it all helped to make this show feel more real. Fun fact...Luke Cage and Frank Castle are both veterans of the US Marine Core Force Reconnaissance units. Force Recon Marines are special ops capable (insane levels of training) but free from US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or SOCOM) so that the USMC basically has a special operations team that is under the direct control of the Corps. As someone who grew up with a Marine father (my dad used to teach the sniper school that Frank referenced in season 2 of Daredevil...just at Camp Lejeune and not Quantico) the way the two characters are written and portrayed really nailed the Corps leadership traits (JJ DID TIE BUCKLE: Justice, Judgment, Dependability, Initiative, Decisiveness, Tact, Integrity, Enthusiasm, Bearing, Unselfishness, Courage, Knowledge, Loyalty, and Endurance)
