Dexter S7E10: The Dark... Whatever

Comments

my big issue with it is with trinity dexters biggest mistake was keeping trinity alive and trying to learn from killers instead of just finishing them, i thought after rita dexter would learn from his mistakes and stop keeping obvious threats alive.

Yea, I think you’re 100% correct, actually. Great analysis!

It would not be possible for everyone to like her. i don't think that is true for any character. Even Deb (who is arguably a fantastically written character most of the times) has many people who don't like her. The point is i don't think that fandom was ever in their motivation when coming up with their story. And that's the proper way of writing the story. Fandoms work in weird ways when it comes to long running shows. For example for Dexter i believe that most of the hate towards Hannah as a character is due to the following reasons: 1. The unfortunate fact, that she is introduced quite late in the game (season 7) 2. She is written as Dexter's first actual love (i mean falling in love with someone and pursuing them), which some fans took it as a slight to Rita, 3. also she comes right after the awful (in my opinion) decision to have Deb thinking that she is in love with Dexter (which turned a whole part of the fandom into shippers for them and in turn hate Hannah because of that) 4. She is written in this season as Deb's opponent, which again didn't help matters. 5. And of course there are some who probably didn't like the character as a preference, which is ok. The reasoning that she is a killer, that some people throw around as an excuse falls flat when you consider that during the same season another great character who is also a killer (also with ambiguous morals like Hannah) is almost universally loved. Isaac. But he was not a love interest for Dexter hence, the universal adoration. The writers tried to portray Hannah as something special for Dexter, as that is the story they wanted to tell, and most took it as a slight to their favorite characters. That's all.

Extremely well said. Agreed with every point! To clarify, you may be right about the writers not being aware of the fandom’s divide. I just always chose to believe they were, though it’s clear the writers enjoy Hannah’s character quite a bit and possibly simply didn’t think that some fans wouldn’t like her.

I don't believe as some people mentioned that the writers gave a thought to the fandom or if they would be split or the various ships or whatever else fans like to go nuts about. They wanted to tell a specific story with complex characters and specifically they wanted to get Dexter (the character) to a new level. They needed a character who would shake him to his core and make him see within, to finally start to evolve. Hannah is perfect for that. She is not a good person, much like Dexter. But she is not a psychopath. Some fans root for Dexter even though he is standing on a mountain of bodies, because he is our main character and he only kills supposedly "bad" people. But he is actively looking for kills. Hannah has said (truthfully) that she doesn't enjoy killing and most of her kills, if looked into, have some logic behind them (The first kill with Wayne Randall was an extreme situation as she very vividly described, the councilor in the Juvie is also explained next episodes, her husband she explained what happened, Beverly Gray i believe most in the Dexter fandom accept that it was probably a mercy kill as Beverly was very ill, and Sal Price threatened to expose who she is). So you could imagine a life where Hannah could grow old without killing another person (if she is not threatened) . You can't say the same for Dexter. So it's a bit hypocritical on the fans part to say that Hannah is a killer and that is why they don't like her. I believe the writers have done a great job up till now, of making a truly excellent season, with compelling characters, great acting, good stories and growth for Dexter as well 9which is hard to do). Now i disagree with one choice they made in the following episodes, cause i believe they missed a chance for more compelling drama, but other than that this season is fantastic.

I can’t help but like Hannah a little. Dexter is actually a more ruthless, thrill killer than Hannah, but the audience empathise with him because we hear his inner monologue, and rationalisations. We don’t get that insight with Hannah. She kills when she feels threatened, or for her own security, not for pure enjoyment. But because we don’t get the same deep insight into Hannah and her motivations, people judge her much more harshly. They’re both killers, but people are comfortable liking Dexter, and disliking Hannah. Next week’s finale is jaw dropping. Can’t wait!

she only has that nice place because she killed the old woman who owned and ran the place and employed her. the irony here is that even though her father is a total ass, he's far more innocent than Hannah from what we know, but the audience simps for Hannah. that's also what the line "you've got the devil in you, boy" means. As despicable as he is, he could never kill people, at least not people who haven't killed innocents. in other words, he strikes me as the type of "good ol' boy" who supports the death penalty for murderers and rapists, but probably not for any other crime. To be fair, I understand that you acknowledge the show can do strange things to the way we think at least on a reactionary, visceral level (none of us would look at a few of these characters the same if they were real people), and I wholeheartedly agree! That's one of the things that makes the show so interesting to watch.

Hannah's father, Jim Beaver, is called Bobby in Supernatural...

Despite the previous few episodes trying to humanize Hannah idk. I don’t like her and I’m kinda hoping she gets the table still. There’s something off about her especially that look at the end of the previous episode. So Dexter doesn’t kill the man who burnt people alive but kills his girlfriend’s father for being a lowlife person. Yes he was an asshole and scum of the earth person but he should not have been killed

You know, before this, I never got the point of this little storyline with Hannah’s father. I thought it was just a generic “X wants money from Y” plot that didn’t really fit the series and was there to give Dexter a kill. But, after watching it with you, I think I FINALLY get it. I think it did two things: grow Dexter’s character (in the “there’s no Dark Passenger” way) and really clarify some stuff about Hannah. What I mean by this is… if the viewer already really likes Hannah, this episode won’t change that. If the viewer already heavily dislikes Hannah, nothing will change either. However, if the viewer is unsure or not fully committed, kinda like you guys, this episode really helps you form an opinion on her. You can feel the need to protect her, and see a vulnerable side of hers, which helps you like her. On the other hand, you see that Dexter has very explicitly — no doubts about it — broken his code for her, and even ignored Deb’s call, which might help you dislike her. It forces you to think about what you value the most. Dexter has broken his code before, but this was REALLY explicit. It’s like they knew how divisive this character would be and want to further drive that home. Like Rob brought up, I think it’s an excellent episode to make you evaluate who you want to defend and stick up to, at least at this point. I never quite looked at it this way, but it was clear by your reaction that there was a major shift in your perception of her. Great reaction, as always!
