Dexter S7E8: Argentina

Comments

I just realized that Dexter has always tried to make people like Miguel, Lumen, and now Debra understand that killing is better than starting to get involved in murder stories. As for Miguel and Lumen, Dexter ended up teaching them how to kill...

I'm sure there are folks like you who just like her. Glad to read your view. But the vast, vast majority of comments that I read on reddit & elsewhere that support Hannah are... she hot. Or just into the shipping aspect. Many dislike her. I personally don't think she brings out any of those themes in a cohesive way. It's a completely nonsensical approach to everything that has come before. The writers lost the plot, in my mind. And the only pervading reason that comes across to me, on screen, as to why Dexter is being so out of character is... she hot. Literally cutting the plastic off and jumping her because she said 'whatever'?! Others have not cared, and he still killed them. It just comes across as male fantasy fanfic. Some other out-of-character things I can't say yet. And there's a big one. For me, the Hannah fixation, by the writers, ruined the core focus of the show. Which should always be... Deb comes first.

I respect your opinion. That said, it seems kinda dismissive and condescending to assume the reasons of and reduce the existence of her fans to “they think she’s hot and/or watched Chuck”. Take it from me. I’ve never watched Chuck. And, while I do find her attractive, she’s not my type. And yet, I adore her character, exactly because of what she brings to the show. She highlights hypocrisy, uncertainty, perversion and love in ways that I think are great for the show. She just makes the show better for me because I like the storylines and topics that emerge from her presence. It has nothing to do with her being hot, and you shouldn’t assume so just because you personally don’t understand it. As I said, I 100% get your opinion on her, and it’s valid. Just please don’t speak for her fans like there aren’t any valid reasons to enjoy her either!

You're right... I should've said that I don't find her a very compelling actress. I think she has a specific range that she works best in... a bit of a flat affect / hotness combo. I didn't like her in her season of '24' either. But, that was a long time ago... Chuck, Dexter, 24... so I definitely think she's improved since then, like with The Handmaid's Tale. Part of it could be that back then, her delivery always seemed a bit off to me, a bit flat.. But that could be that she hadn't perfected her ease of an American accent yet.

Octavia

agreed with everything you just said! Except the.... 'YS is not that good of an actress' part! Have you seen her in Handmaid's Tale? If not, go watch that show rn, if yes, touchè but why do you still think so?

From Season 1... I've always said that Dexter is a character that should not be romanticized. He's really not laudable. (But he's enjoyable... especially when defined by his relationship with Deb.) Same goes for Hannah. So together, they spell ruin for me. Hannah is a very divisive character in the Dexter fandom. As many don't like her, as do. She seems to have a defense squad on here... but I do not like her. For me, the writers lost the core of this show because Yvonne Strahoski is so hot. And the writing is like they all lost their minds like a horny teenage-seeming Dexter. It's like... If she had played Lila... suddenly Lila would be cooler. But no. Lila was much better played. And should be appreciated because she saved Dexter from the monsterish choice of killing Doakes or framing him as a mass murderer. Either is despicable. I mean, it was a cop-out by the show... but still saved Dexter from a genuinely evil dilemma. Dexter is always about hypocrisy on a subconscious level... but with how Hannah is handled, it becomes nonsensically hypocritical. I also don't think YS is that good of an actress. But you know, she's got her fans because 1) Hot & 2) 'Chuck'. For me, Hsnnah is transparent from the start. And only serves for Dexter to once again lose his code. And that has never played out well.

Octavia

I mean, if we're extending some grace to Dexter and empathizing with him even if he's a serial killer and a scattered one at that, often reckless with the lives of the people close to him, I don't see why we shouldn't extend it to Hannah as well. She seems way different from Lila so far, and seems to want a family just like Dexter, just with some killing on the side (sentence I would only say in regards to this show and never in real life btw) ahahah

That conversation between Isaak and Dexter in the bar is so beautifully written and acted! One of my favourite scenes

MKeiran92

Yea, I 100% get where you're coming from and you're correct, even. I'm afraid that if you don't like the conflict Hannah brings to the story, you won't like her character at all. It's a shame, but she IS probably the most divisive character in the fandom.

Seiinity

Deb really cannot catch a break and her emotional acting is phenomenal. I mean she is 100% right no matter how you look at it. Hannah fits dexters code he’s being a hypocrite. It’s already bad enough that Deb is forced to lie for him but now he’s sleeping with the one person she desperately wants dead who perfectly fits his code.

James

I agree and also with Rita Dex wasn’t fully aware that he loved her until her funeral. It’s actually a revelation to him in that episode… while with Hannah he’s aware of himself falling in love

Cynthia

Agreed! Isaak is one of those characters that I cannot imagine anyone else playing. I think Ray Stevenson brought a certain kind of… “dangerous charisma” that just elevates the character to another level.

Seiinity

That scene between Dexter and Deb near the end… woof. Jennifer Carpenter is a fucking star. What a performance, I can’t even begin to describe it. And Rob was so perceptive for detecting that hint of jealously, and for correctly calling out what I think is the real blow. In her mind, she can’t be with him because she’s his sister, but a dangerous serial killer can? This is also the episode that really marked Isaak as one of my favourite characters of the show. His talk with Dexter is so iconic in my mind and it is SO refreshing to have this kind of perspective from a season’s antagonist. I feel like this season really stepped up its moral and emotional dilemmas, hence all the callbacks to Rita and Dexter’s past. And, finally, I think Trin nailed it when she said Dexter is acting like a teenager because this is arguably the first time he’s felt something this intense. He deeply cared about Rita and did love her, I have no doubt, but I think Hannah just… unlocked something else that he doesn’t know how to handle because he’s never felt it before. It messes with his brain – and code.

Seiinity

And this episode reminds me more than any why Isaak is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. He's hilarious and his conversations with Dexter are so good. It really is a sad circumstances aren't different, like he said.

This show gives me a reason to look forward to mondays.
