Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood (2019)

Comments

I was a little surprised I didn't hear Rob or Trin mention that the actress in the film Margot Robbie was watching as herself in the theater was not Margot Robbie, but was the actual Sharon Tate.

Cindy

Would it be possible for pulp fiction to get reuploaded? Would love to watch your reaction to that!

Nick

“I wonder if this was based on anything True”. - Rob

Troymk1

At minute 53:03, Rob: "Why does everyone look like a serial killer?". I had to speak to the monitor, "Dude this is Charles Manson!".😀

AnGeLuS

I really love that alternate reality of these atrocious events we all know happened. Seing Sharon Tate so happily pregnant at the end was so poetic and sad at the same time. The first time I watched this movie I was very impressed. I enjoyed it more on rewatch though.

Kamanda Hickey

Fun fact: The actor (Damon Herriman) who played Charles Manson in this movie also played the psycho killer in the TV series Mindhunters. He has a more than passing resemblance to Manson, but is uncanny in capturing Manson's mannerisms.

Sharon Lathan

Exactly. The first time I watched it I was sick to my stomach, knowing what was about to happen based on the real life tragedy. I was cursing Tarantino out loud for focusing on Sharon Tate. It is still so sad, but the beauty of this alternate reality is the fantasy of imagining she lived.

Sharon Lathan

I am old so vividly recall the Manson murders, so perhaps that colors my vision, but I honestly didn't think there were any people in the entire world who have never heard of Charles Manson!! Or Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. I kept waiting for Rob or Trin to connect that dot. It definitely makes the movie vastly more relevant and intense to have that knowledge. The fantasy element in the "Once Upon a Time" makes no real sense without understanding that in the end none of the occupants at the Polanski house were brutally murdered. Still, a fun reaction and a fun movie.

Sharon Lathan

😂😂 me too ! Both parts ! I was like WATCH OUT!!! I think it’s what built the tension through the movie. You know how evil they are and it definitely keeps you on your toes. Dakota Fanning looked so creepy ! I thought for sure she killed George lol

Michele G

I can’t believe yall haven’t heard of the Manson murders. That is what makes this movie so good bc you think you know what’s about to happen and then it flips on its head and we get a fairytale revenge ! I absolutely love this movie !!

Michele G

Talk about fear and dread...the first time I saw this, when Cliff went to the ranch I was sure Manson was going to jump out from Spahn's bedroom with a chainsaw or something, especially with it being a Tarantino film. And when Dalton was screaming at the hippies in the car thought "shit, he's dead!".

Ellen Noir

I knew about Manson but mainly through the fact that I'm Polish and grew up interested in film production and very familiar with Polanski and his work. If not through Polanski, I'm not sure if I'd know the story.

Chris B

Licorice Pizza is another movie that takes place in this era in Los Angeles, you guys would love it!!!

Ben

One can not find a fault on Tarantino's visual storytelling, it is poetry, as always. And I like the idea that he gave Sharon Tate a once upon a time style fairytale ending. My personal issue with the movie is that maybe is giving a new generation, that sometimes doesn't care to dig deep on issues, a not so good a reason to get to know the real tragedy, or the irony that is Leo's character ending up being happy because he is in Polanski's home... Technically I don't have an Issue with the movie, personally, I feel very conflicted. But glad it was a good watch for R&T.

MarySoul

I know the true story and while watching this I had a sense of fear and dread about what was going to happen in the end. When they started getting their ass kicked I literally said out loud “hell yeah !!!!!” It was so satisfying seeing them get beat to death and then hearing Sharon’s voice over the intercom. It’s what I wished would have happened in real life. It’s sad but satisfying. I love this movie. Mainly bc Leo and Brad are so good in it. Very likable characters and the surprise ending I did not see coming 🥳

Michele G

I always thought it was just a fantasy. I mean, really, who wouldn't have rather had this happen than what actually did? I remember the first time I watched it and got a certain amount of satisfaction out of it. There are a slew of movies and tv shows who use the alternative history plot element. The Man in the High Castle, For All Mankind, White Man's Burden, C.S.A., to name a few.

Stephanie Bedworth

Yes, I think the ending is very touching. Jay Sebring, (who tried to protect Sharon on that night), coming down to the gate and the bringing Leo’s character up to meet Sharon. It was very sweet.

Jan T

I'm a boomer who vividly remembers when this happened. It shocked the nation. Nixon said something about the "family's" guilt and got blow back from the judge & prosecutors for jeopardizing their case. Security dog sales went up in L.A.

Nancy Scogin

I love this movie. I think because the innocent ones live.

Nancy Scogin

I am very familiar with, as it is known, the Tate/LaBianca Murders, as most of the same Manson family members murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the next night. Sorry to say Ms. Tate was nearly 9 months pregnant when she was murdered. I think in a way, re-imagining an opposite ending adds more emphasis to this tragedy because we know what really happened and are left with an "if only" sorrow. It is interesting Tarantino included Steve McQueen in the film. Charlie Manson had a hit list of celebrities they intended to kill and McQueen was on that list.

Cindy

“One Upon a Time” is literally Tarantino’s fairytale version of the Manson murders. He’s reimagined the ending of that horrific night, so that the Manson gang fails to kill Sharon Tate and her three friends. It’s his version of the killers getting what they deserved, and Sharon and her friends getting to live happily ever after. Tarantino had the approval of Sharon Tate’s sister to make this film. The Manson murders were appalling crimes. This film is an attempt to right that terrible wrong, at least on film. If only…

Jan T

Maybe Rob & Trin should watch the 2018 movie "Charlie Says" after this. for the real story

AnGeLuS

I appreciated the altered history. I saw the [unedited] crime scene photos 20 years ago and they still haunt me. Watching Tate just have a nice uneventful day and at the end seeing her and her friends blissfully unaware of what happened in our timeline definitely took the edge off a little.

Ellen Noir

Whenever I see this movie I just think of Ricky Gervais' joke from the Golden Globes 'Once upon a time in Hollywood nearly 3 hours long, Leonardo Dicaprio attended the Premier and by the end his date was too old for him. Even Prince Andrews thinking come on Leo mate you're nearly 50' Cut to Dicaprio in the crowd 🤣

Michael Harrop

I go back and forth on Tarantino flicks, because he is such a self-indulgent weirdo, sometimes, but I love this one. I love it because it is power fantasy/wish fulfillment of an alternate timeline. Same with Inglourious Basterds, or Django unchained. This film is also just stacked with some amazing performances top to bottom. Cliff and Dalton are pretty horrible people in their own ways and somehow still endearing and incredibly watchable. What happened to Sharon Tate And her friends in the real world is honestly worse than anything that happened to those hippies in this. It’s still insane to me that things like that happen in the real world.

James W.

It's far from my favourite Tarantino film for sure. This is not the first time he has altered history in his films (Inglorious Basterds and how that ends) because he isn't making them to be remotely historically accurate. He writes them in a "who gives a f**k imagine if" kind of scenario. Some people don't like and/or understand that but at least it's original. In regards to this film, anyone who knows the history is in a position where they know something the characters do not and we're expecting Sharon Tate to experience a horrible end, and then... something completely different happens

Kale

I guess Tarantino movies just aren't for me. What's the reason for changing the narrative around the horrific Charles Manson murders. Maybe I just don't get it or maybe I shouldn't be watching this in the middle of the night when I don't feel well. Looking forward to reading the comments to see what people love about this film. Not trying to be negative. Honestly hoping to be enlightened.🙂 So happy the dog survived.

Bradley Weeks

I know of the Manson murders but I don't know 100% the facts. I'm pretty sure they did actually murder Sharon Tate while she was pregnant

Kim Magee

I'm so curious... how many were already aware of the true story of the Manson family Tate murders before watching this fantastical revision? As someone long familiar with the events... I'm of two minds. On one hand, I get what Tarantino is doing by taking the power away from those evil pricks. On the other... we all wish we could rewrite history... and I feel like most younger viewers don't realize the true story... so I feel like there's a danger in magically waving away the real tragedy. Tarantino is always unique though.

Octavia

What a yummy cast, Brad, Leo, and Margot Robbie, I love the bit with Bruce Lee and Brad pitt
