The Last Samurai (2003)

Comments

If you’d like to see unorthodox Tom Cruise movies, please watch Collateral with Jamie Foxx and Mark Ruffalo. Amazingly good. Love watching with you, thanks!

Holly

Completely agree with you, DWW is not a white savior movie at all. It's a movie of self discovery and realizing that life is complicated, difficult, beautiful and tragic all at the same time. To quote the last samurai... "Life in every breath".

Kale

Gotta jump in here to say I agree with Kim. Dances With Wolves is in no way a “white savior” film. I don’t want to say more because hopefully Rob and Trin will watch it at some point. But, if anything, The Last Samurai would actually fall more into that category. I wish people could just enjoy these amazing movies without having to somehow politicize, or read bias into them. They’re both breathtaking films. Period.

I've voted for this movie every time it was an option in the polls and was the one to suggest it for this round. I'm beyond ecstatic that you two finally watched it! It's such a beautiful movie with a beautiful score and my favorite Tom Cruise role hands down. I knew it was gonna make you two cry and I wasn't disappointed lmao. Great reaction as always, but I loved this in particular!

Rhonu

really enjoyed this movie

Agreed. I think people reacted to what they thought it was from their assumption but after seeing they changed their view point. I have seen that exact flip in many reactions. When I saw it was just assumed it was period film Oscar bait for Tom Cruise and ended up loving it because it is just a good movie. Also there was a period, I think movie falls in that time, where many folks let their parasocial awareness of Tom Cruise offscreen antics made them forget that the dude is good at his job.

I agree that it is good but I can't disagree with the critique/observation because it is valid. There a lot of films that fall into that category and it isn't an indictment of their quality but it is a movie trope that endures to this day. Just as there are still 'magical negro' and 'hooker with a heart of gold' etc, so films overcome the limitation of the somewhat lazy trope. One of my favorite films of all time, 'Last of the Mohicans' falls into that category but it doesn't make it less good.

Japan does have an emperor, but like you said he's useless, which is a shame because compared to the prime ministers they're a pretty decent family.

This movie evokes so much emotion in so few words. Thanks guys!

Christine

Yeah. Odd that some people have considered this as a white savior type of movie. Never occurred to me. Tom Cruise’s character was more of the narrator.

Christine

In my top 5 films of all time! During my junior prom, I went without a date and ended up convincing a friend to leave and watch this movie after discovering he hadn't seen it before. Memorable time! Fun fact: the word Samurai is both singular and plural, so the title could be referring to Katsumoto or the entire clan. This was Ken Wantanabe's best role. Absolutely killed it. Great reaction!

Michael Harn

That's such a good movie

Kim Magee

Lol yep

Kim Magee

I'd bet when they finally watch dances with Wolves they will be very glad they finally do, for two socks alone

Kim Magee

Dances with Wolves doesn't deserve that either , it's an incredible film

Kim Magee

Hershel (Scott Wilson) from the walking dead is in this. He’s the guy at the end that says “this is an outrage”. He’s unrecognizable with his facial hair but his voice is familiar

Schmaster

Oh man Hershel Greene makes an appearance!

Landon DuVall

You mean The Edge of Tomorrow? Another good one.

The end of the Shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji restoration is a really interesting Part of Japanese history. This movie is not historically accurate, but it is gorgeous and captures the romantic ideal of the period. This film gets lumped in with dances with wolves as a corny, like white savior movie, but I don’t feel that this one deserves that criticism. It is just a good film, and as you guys figure it out, Tom Cruise is not the last samurai, I have seen many reactors who have come to the conclusion that the white man visiting Japan is somehow the last samurai. Ujio, The sword Master, was played by Hiroyuki Sanada. He is a fantastic actor, has been in 1 million things, but has come to prominence recently because of his Exceptional work in front of, and behind the camera on “Shogun”. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not watching it.

James W.

Thanks for a great reaction! I’m not always happy with the films that win the polls, but this is one of my favorites. And one of my favorite soundtracks. The entire cast is incredible here, but I just adore Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada. And thank you for pointing out that the last samurai was NOT Algren, but Katsumoto. Many people assume wrong.

MaggieS61

We members are truly blessed with v for vendetta and now this movie.

Schmaster

I love this film, hope you get around to Shogun when you have a clear schedule.

Strav 23

agreed 100%

Ninaofthe90s

Tom Cruise I swear can just play pretty much any role, the day after tomorrow. Maverick, this one Mission impossible, one of my favourites, Jerry Maguire. Oh my God I love that movie, same with rain man, cocktail,, Rock of ages has to be one of his funniest roles, and then we have the things like days of thunder, colour of money, minority report, risky Business, all the right moves, I can't think of too many movies of his that I didn't like

Kim Magee

Hans Zimmer's score is God tier. One of his best. ❤️

Ninaofthe90s

The perfect reaction is a rare thing. You could spend your life looking for one, and it would not be a wasted life.

Kale

First! Let's roll!
