V for Vendetta (2006)

Comments

The people at the end who had actually died during the film where dead like the little girl, it was symbolic as you also see the actress and her lover etc. One thing I want to say about this film is how on the nose it is politically, we haven’t been doing well since the 90’s and I watched this film in 2006 (I was 19) and it blew my mind and really opened my eyes to social injustices, I never really heard politicians the same way ever again, everything that comes out their mouths sounded like lies, and well when was the last time you heard a politician tell the truth? It’s quite scary but I quote this movie a lot, and the one that always stuck with me was this; “The people shouldn’t be afraid of their government, the government should be afraid of its people” Not to get political or anything but…… does this not feel familiar?

Late to this reaction but since Rob mentioned it, here is a interesting little bit of trivia about the dominos scene (- which was, indeed, real.) “The scene used 22,000 dominoes and professional domino assemblers (a real thing apparently) were hired to set it up. It took them over 200 hours to set the scene, which had to be shot several times to get different angles of the dominos falling.”

Beware The Jabberwock

I knew nothing about this movie but I'm sure glad I didn't pass on watching! I really liked this film, and it was great seeing Stephen Fry on screen! Another enjoyable reaction, guys.

Nancy Scogin

I wasn't.

Ghost Mom

I'm 30 minutes in and just realizing dont remember anything so far haha. I think maybe I'll remember like 3 or 4 scenes from this one 🤦🏾‍♀️😅

Jenny Lee Villanueva

That was an expression, said in a humorous way, don’t feel so personally attacked by it :/

Gabriel

I think Rob and Trin would love the show The Handmaids Tale.😉

Flopsi80

Thanks for the heads up, we did not know about that. Pretty sure this and the Matrix are all we watched from them tbh.

Can you show me where I blamed Rob and Trin? I watched the reaction, I know that's how they were credited, I was just informing them incase they didn't know.

Ghost Mom

But they were still credited as brothers back then, can’t blame Rob and Trin for just reading it lol. And also, for a hot minute before the second one transitioned, they were credited and referred to as the Wachowski siblings ;p

Gabriel

In Germany we have very important elections this month. Many people should watch this film again so that they can get on the right path. We need more V in this world! Of course without the violence and explosions 😅

AnGeLuS

Yes! I liked Sense 8 a lot :)

AnGeLuS

I needed this rewatch in my life

FedeM

I'm that way too with shows. Partly because if there's too much hype I wind up unconsciously going in with unreasonably high expectations but also, I lose the plot or the excitement dies down when I have to wait for new seasons. Binging is better!

Ellen Noir

Appropriate timing for those of us living in hell.

He wasn't wearing anything bulletproof

Thank you. That was a lovely reaction and it is always good when this movie can reach new audiences, people that for whatever reason haven't seen it yet, because as it has been said here, its core message is always important and relevant, these days it seems again, sadly, more so. P.S.: I completely get you Trin, I'm like that.. I haven't seen stranger things for the same reason.... People were pushing so hard, "you must see it, it is fantastic", again and again, that I rallied in a different direction, now I'm just waiting for the last season to binge watching it 🫣🤭

MarySoul

Best line ever: "People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people!"

Cindy Clarkson

It's scary how increasingly relevant this movie, this theme, seems. Or what it says about society that it always feels that way. V wasn't a hero. He was a victim, a villain, a vigilante, a vessel. His death is inevitable because he only existed for this. To be a mirror, a match... the final echo. And so tyranny can kill Evey's parents, Gordon, Valerie, the little girl... but they can't kill the ideas that they died for. Under the mask is the idea... and ideas don't die.

Octavia

The little girl did die. The end shows all the victims of the regime along with the people. Like Evey said he was all of us so you see everyone including the actress that wrote the letter in the cell and Stephen fry’s character and of course the little girl

Cynthia

It's the Wachowski sisters now. But either way, I'm glad you enjoyed this movie, was one of my favs back when it came out. Hugo Weaving is fantastic. Another project the Wachowskis did is a show called Sense8 it's very unique and intense. two short seasons on Netflix. Would love to see you two check it out some time!

Ghost Mom

Edit: I think all of the people like the little girl that is shot, Gordon (Stephen Fry's character), and Valeria and her lover do all die as shown. What we see at the end is more symbolic that all of the victims of that regime live on through resistance. In the same way that V lives on as a symbol, not unlike Guy Fawkes to a degree. Even if, as Rob pointed out, folks these days may not have the context for him outside of it being a day for fireworks. That part of the end sequence smells to me like some movie executive was worried that it was all a bit to inscrutable and bleak so they forced the director to make some changes so it would read better in to focus groups or something. The original comic was set in the 80s and was focused on the political climate in Britain at the time and that is probably why it is hard to gauge the setting at first; it is a period film for a period that never existed basically. The author has distanced himself from all of the adaptations of his works due to some serious disagreements he has DC/Warner who hold the rights to much of his output. Oddly the HBO Watchmen series from a few years back, which isn't a reboot or a sequel to the film, but a spiritual sequel to the comic, feels like the most faithful to the tone of Alan Moore's work and he literally had no hands on it as far as I know. That might be a hot take to some more rigid fans but it is a good series. Fans who really love the comic often have a dim view of this film's handling of the comic's tone and themes but as a fan myself, I enjoy it for all the ways I feel it succeeded rather than be a grumpy nerd about. Purists in every fandom are just a bunch of knobs and should be ignored imo.

Poetry in motion! I will Remember 2/5/25!

Anthony Ancona

Oooh I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time yay!! Gonna get some tea and have a much needed movie night.

Chrissy

Just started the video and I thought I'd comment that the story was originally published as a British graphic novel, and then later (a few years) completed and published by DC comics. Love this movie 🤩
