The Expanse S5E3+4 Mother - Gaugamela

Comments

To recap: As Naomi told Holden and Prax, her child was taken from her. She didn't simply abandon him. When she was around Filip's age, the man she loved tricked her into committing an act of terror that killed hundreds of people. She was terrified by what she had done and wanted to leave with her child but Marco had taken him from her. So she fled and stopped feeling anything at all, burying herself in her work until she joined Holden answering the distress call on the Canterbury. She managed, as a struggling belter, to get an engineering degree. She has been the one responsible for keeping the Rocinante in one piece, not to mention the Behemoth. She was willing to trade her place on the Weeping Somnamulist, which she had fixed, to save 52 people, while Holden went after the protomolecule hybrid. And she did save those people. Alex, on the other, let his family believe he was dead after the Canterbury was destroyed because he just didn't want to go home. Yet he gets no grief for this. Naomi is as much an MVP as anyone on this ship. You’ll root for her before all is said and done. More will be revealed. In the meantime, while it's tough to see Fred Johnson killed, it's nothing compared to losing Tyreese. I'm sure you'll agree. Also, note that Thomas Jane (Miller) directed the first of these two episodes. Still with us. Kind of. Very cool to see Camina wanting to honor her dear friend Ashford, a man she was initially at great odds with, a man who changed for the better. Watching these characters grow is one of the best things about this show. And the roller coaster is just getting started. Here we go.

Did I missed a metaphorical illustration of the end of the joke? Plus, I do agree, sometimes it is difficult to get on board with Naomie. We'll see if she gets a "redemption" arc.

Ashford's ship, the Tynan, was stripped and left by Marco and found by Drummer an episode or two ago. She now has it and added it to her two other ships.

Stephanie Bedworth

Don't worry Rob, Drummer is in an open relationship there on the SS Abercrombie and Fitch. BTW, Gaugamela - the title of the second episode - refers to a victory by Alexander the Great's army over the much larger Persian Empire that resulted in the latter's downfall. Naturally, Inaros sees himself as such a figure... Oh, and I'm still waiting to hear the end of Delgado's joke...

Michael Celia

Yes, Ashford was sad. Fred was more a shock.

Thadman

Watching that first impact on earth, with the guy and the fish, always upsets me a bit. And Fred’s death too. Though I agree, it was Ashford’s death that killed me the first time I watched the show.
