The Bourne Supremacy

Comments

If you watch the fight scene at the apartment in Paris and the subsequent car chase in The Bourne Identity and consider that Doug Liman had a budget of $60 million while The Bourne Supremacy's was $75 million, it makes Paul Greengrass seem like a lazy filmmaker to me. If it's simply Greengrass' preferred style rather than laziness, then I guess I'm just not a fan. When I saw The Bourne Supremacy in the theater, it gave me major motion sickness. There were so many quick cuts to and away from shots that added nothing to either the action or the story aside from the fact that were stylized quick cuts. It's not a bad movie, but, for me, it pales in comparison to the first one.

Yeah, I was thinking Bourne movies started the trend of shaky cam, but yeah it was more in the middle of the trend..Another Greengrass, shaky cam, Matt Damon film, with John Powell as composer is Green Zone..I remember liking it but haven't seen it since it came out in theaters..

'Bourne Legacy' is very skippable, probably better if you never saw the trailers which very much mislead you as to what the movie actually was, and 'Jason Bourne' is ok but definitely not as good as any of the trilogy..I would say to skip '4' and maybe watch 5..But you might as well watch all of them to be on even footing with the rest of us and so you can form your own fully-versed opinion..

I believe Greengrass directed the 5th movie, "Jason Bourne", which was one of the reasons Damon agreed to do it. I enjoyed it, mostly because I'm invested in the franchise, but the writing left something to be desired. Thankfully, there were enough talented actors to carry the movie, despite the hastily thrown together dialogue.

Shaky Cam was a major trend in the 2000's. People dont realise it did serve a purpose; we're talking about an era just before CGI became more prevalent. Films were attempting more intense action with the star at the helm but they didnt have CGI for face replacement or action stars capable like Keanu. So they used shaky cam to hide stuntmen and action beats that were challenging. When executed well it also ups the energy and makes the scene feel more real, like a camera shuddering in a car chase. But Paul Greengrass leans on it too much. Ideally there's a mix of long steady shots between these. Where Bourne excels is in its crowd scenes. These are real locations with hundreds of extras and our actor cutting through. Yet we know where he is and what he wants. That and the car chase destruction is magnificent. Nowadays car chases feel so clean and polished.

Even when this movie came out, the biggest criticism was the overdone shaky camera. This was at the height of that trend and after this, movies began to move away from it. The third one is a complete banger though... And as others have said, Landy is played by Joan Allen, which you most recently saw in Pleasantville...two VERY different characters...

Michael Celia

You mentioned the writing. The films were adapted from the novels of Robert Ludlum who created Jason Bourne. Ludlum was a popular novelist of thrillers in the US.

Cindy

Amazing film, shaky cam was the worst part for sure.

Kale

Paul Greengrass directed the 2nd and 3rd (4th one too?) Bourne films. He really pressed the shaky cam. It was hard to get used to , but it pans out in the end.

"Pam Landy" (Joan Allen) should look familiar. You guys just saw a lot of her face with and without grey make-up in Pleasantville. She's a great actress. I don't mind the shaky cam at all. With a steady cam, you watch more from the outside looking in. With a handheld cam, you feel like you're in their shoes. But I also ride trains a lot, and even enjoy sitting backwards.

Wendy Sparks

Agreed! It was meant to be a trilogy. I’d stop after Bourne Ultimatum. The others were added on simply because of the popularity of these films.

This would be the best of the series if they hadn't overdone it with the shaky cam, especially in the fight scene with the former Treadstone agent..I think this is the best car-chase of the series, and has my favorite track from the score, with Bourne running on the beach.. That being said, I think the 3rd is my favorite, I really love 2 and 3 pretty much equally (even with the filming error that we will talk about when you get to watching it), but I think 3 eeks it out nowadays because I really liked the actor who plays the main office guy who is now usually known from another of my favorite shows.. But you gotta love that owl sound that John Powell put in the score..

You guys should watch the John Wick "Honest Trailer". They call out the shaky camera trope from most action movies. I liked all 5 movies (last one being the weakest), so I hope we get to watch them all eventually.

John Borek

I think the same I think about most series...each one gets worse as it goes along. But maybe I'm in minority? I just that was the general buzz about them even back when the first came out.

Terri

The next movie is the finale of this trilogy and a perfect place to stop. The 4th movie is more of a spinoff, and ironically I don't even remember if I watched the 5th movie.

It been so long since I have watched these movies but 2 things I always remember the shaky camera is a bit much in the second movie and the 3rd one is my favourite

Strav 23

A lot of people who have seen the series are normally split between the first and second being the second best, but I think most people say the 3rd one is the best one, really hope y'all get to watch it!

Belligerent Jawa

This is a good reminder that if it's a sequel... Karl Urban is probably in it. (Oooo... we're starting and ending the month this way with Karl. Of course, much more likable in Star Trek.)

Octavia

The actress Rob thought he recognised, playing CIA Director Pam Landy, is Joan Allen. She also played the TV mum in Pleasantville.
