FIRST TIME WATCHING: X-Men Dark Phoenix

Rob: "I love that gun" *Gun dies* GOD DAMMIT ROB!

I think a good way to look at the timelines of these movies is almost strictly at the stories they’re trying to tell. The First 3 X-Men Movies and where Days of Future Past ends is kind of its own thing while First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix are its own new timeline. This is addressed loosely in Logan since it’s after all the original X-Men stories have passed but it’s easier to connect it to the original movies because of the actors involved with it. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is its own thing and was retconned quite a lot with the following entries (Deadpool 1 and 2 makes it very clear lol). Deadpool 1 and 2 are in a similar situation to Logan with whatever timeline it comes from not really important. The Wolverine/Logan is supposed to seem like a continuation of the OG movies, but the First Class timeline was Fox’s attempt at fixing what the originals did wrong so you could say Wolverine could continue from them too. Just depends on how you want to view it. Dark Phoenix is still a bit off from the comics but does better than The Last Stand in terms of Jean’s story so you can choose which one you want to go from. In terms of why this movie happened or where they’re at now, it’s pretty much done at this point for the Fox movies and those timelines. This was right before the rights to all the mutants/X-Men/Fantastic Four was bought back by Disney so this was the last movie that was planned to be separate from the MCU outside of the New Mutants - which was made during the transition of the character properties. The main thing to take away from it all is the stories the movies were telling, what they were eventually leading to (the Sentinel invasion of Days of Future Past) and then what the aftermath of the world would be like (Logan) or what would be different/stay the same if they were able to stop the invasion and subsequently mutant extinction. Deadpool & Wolverine will explain a bit more on all of this, especially with him literally explaining the rights situation with the studios…lol The next movie and final X-Men movie would be The New Mutants, which is loosely connected to all the movies you guys have watched, and isn’t technically connected to the MCU even though it was released after the rights had been reverted back to Disney. Worth the watch so you can learn another cool hand full of mutants and the team they make up but it isn’t essential to what’s coming in the future in the MCU (or at least not yet.) After that or instead, would be Deadpool & Wolverine which takes place in the MCU but is a culmination of not only the Fox X-Men movies, but also the majority of the other Fox FF movies, Blade movies, and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Elektra, Ghost Rider, and even cancelled X-Men movies like Beast and Gambit. From this point, story wise, just know that Xavier in Multiverse of Madness is from his own timeline that’s supposed to represent these old X-Men movies as a whole, and also Beast in the Marvels is from a similar situation but hasn’t been clarified (think of Kelsey Grammer playing the role again and not Nicholas Hoult.) Whether they’re planning to revisit one of these timelines in an upcoming Avengers multiverse movie is remaining to be seen, but the mutants haven’t existed in the MCU yet because of the rights issues. They’ve started hinting at mutants eventually showing up with all the X-Men cameos, Kamala being told she has the mutant gene, Namor admitting he’s a mutant in Wakanda Forever, but there likely won’t be another official X-Men movie in the MCU until after Avengers: Secret Wars is released. Also keep in mind that a lot of, if not all of these old X-Men characters are likely showing up in that movie too. If you guys have any other questions, respond here and I’ll answer to the best of my abilities. Hope this helps

This isn’t even MCU at least the MCU has a coherent timeline

New mutants, while being in the same universe and having X characters, is a nice stand alone story that has great casting with Anya Taylor Joy and Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones. It’s also a more horror toned movie.

This was... definitely a movie! I'm baffled that they managed to screw up the phoenix saga TWICE. I think The Last Stand is far superior to this. Hans Zimmer's score rocks, though.

Funny you mention a fight between Wanda and Jean I was thinking about that myself. They are like 2 of the most overpowered characters in marvel they have limitless potential. A fight between them would destroy everything in existence. A movie titled “The Phoenix VS the Scarlett witch” sounds badass

James

knowing marvel they like their multiverse and recycled stuff so they will 100% do that and thats why i am done with MCU. As soon as they started messing with multiverse bs i was done. Like whole MCU if it is Xmen or Avengers went to shit. I miss the times when we had the beginnings of MCU with 1st movies of Captain America or Iron Man. Those movies were so simple but so good . I always like to compare MCU to ppl who ask why i am done with it to Fast and Furious saga. Basically from roads to space😂😂

Days of Future Past was the true ending for me. It was pure masterpiece and rly good ending for Xmen world but both Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix destroyed it. If it at least ended with Apocalypse i would be fine because it was decent movie but this movie was the evidence that "doing 4 movies instead of trilogy" can end tragically. That was the main problem. Probablly the best thing would be if they somehow made a movie back then after 1st Class and stuck it in between 1st Class and Days of Future Past and let Days of Future Past be the trilogy ending. For me "Perfect ending"

The Dark Phoenix Saga is one of my favorite Marvel comic stories. This film however is a complete mess IMO.

Leosunfire23

agree. tbh i couldnt care less about MCU now. As soon as they started messing with multiverse and time travel whole MCU went to shit. Xmen should have ended with Days of future past. That movie was a masterpiece and a good send off movie for Xmen world but so sad it got demolished by marvel creators who wanted to milk everything from it

I love xmen movies more than avengers in MCU and i still do. I still some what liked this one because the actors and characters r perfect but it wasnt rly that good. I never liked "recycled stuff". 1st we started in Avengers world with all that multiverse bs and it made whole that universe so ridiculious i basically stopped watching. Then even Xmen. I dont get what is the point of Dark Phoenix 2.0. We already saw this in original trilogy in a way. This movie just felt like a filler for whole time. i also didnt like the "Aliens". It was dumb. They could have made this movie about Jean only without bringing these "Aliens" into the mix. It felt really silly. Also whole universe is making zero sense now Without sharing anything Deadpool and Wolverine was more of the same bs story wise but it was at least kind of funny With latest movies and recent news going around what we should expect in marvel universe i might just retire from MCU. It is getting out of hand and ridiculious

The timeline is a mess, this movie is a mess..Most enjoyable thing about this movie is Hans Zimmer's score..

Superpotroast

The biggest issue with this movie for me was its inability to do justice to the legendary Phoenix Saga. As a standalone film, it's not the worst thing ever. Far from amazing, but still watchable. But when compared to its source material, it does fall short. The Phoenix Saga is one of the most iconic and impactful storylines in comic book history, and this movie adaptation doesn't come close to capturing its grandeur. While the movie touches on some of the comic's basic story beats, it does so in such a compressed manner and on a much smaller scale, that the impact is severely diminished. Dark Phoenix is a saga of cosmic proportions, comparable to the scale and significance of Thanos' Snap. The film, unfortunately, lacks that sense of scope and gravity, leaving the whole thing feel flat and underwhelming.

We are going to do DP+Wolverine next, we are dying to see it and then we can do the other stuff. If people are up for it ofc.

I loved your Palpatine comments!

Sorry commenting as I watch. You seem to know that the timelime has reset yet still try to connect it to the original timeline lol. After Days of Future Past its completely different than the original movies. You have to to suspend belief with the age of Magneto and Xavier obviously but that's its own thing that you just have to ignore.

If you love Fassbender I suggest Assassins Creed (2016). Now I didn't mind it but there are those that hate it. BUT, Michael steals the show. So if you're looking for a Michael Fasbender role that's fun like this, I 100% suggest.

Ae Jae Meade

Dark Phoenix, the iconic story done so badly they did it TWICE, and it's worse the second time. It'll never not be funny to me that Fox let the same writer producer that fucked this up so horribly in X3 not only do it again, but direct it as his first and last directorial gig. Also the aliens were supposed to be the Skrulls like in the MCU but since this was when it was, before Disney bought them, Fox couldn't use them and the whole train ending was reshot as it originally was a lot like Captain Marvel in space. IIRC they even dropped X-Men from the entire marketing campaign which was weird, then added it back when they saw ticket sales were dreadful. A mess. Glad you guys stuck it out through this saga! More wins than not

trlb

Sorry you had to watch this one lol

I got tired of the X-Men timelines being such a mess. I just didn’t care about the franchise anymore. This was okay as a stand alone movie, but I hope Marvel will now finally get the chance to go for a complete reboot of the X-Men, and their integration into the MCU.

Jan T

Basically you can account most of the changes in the events to the timeline being reset so watching it backwards wouldn’t helps cuz it’s a new timeline that branches away after they prevent mystique from killing Peter Dinklage’s character but wolverines future still happens in a branch of this new timeline. Best to think of it like parallel timeline instead of trying to link it to the originally x men trilogy/ timeline. I know it’s confusing but Deadpool warned y’all in his first movie lmao

Cynthia

I love how Rob is confusing Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastine and yet says Jessica's name which is the correct one 😂😂

Ae Jae Meade

They should have ended this series of movies at Logan. With the exception of Magneto my favorite X-Men character and the quicksilver scene, this movie is terrible.

Ray H

Sorry New mutants is next month /s

Rob: "Yeah, there's no x-men in the DP&W movie title." Wolverine: 😐

throg of thunder

Tell me Deadpool & Wolverine is next.
