FIRST TIME WATCHING: Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I find this fascinating as to how people speaking the same language evolved in differing accents when speaking that language and how geography might play into the difference. For example, other than Quebec, there is only subtle differences between American and Canadian accents. I can generally identify a Canadian only by their pronunciation of "ou".

Cindy

Ian McDiarmid plays Doctor Lancaster who is better known for playing Emperor Palpatine!

Anthony Ancona

Yes! it's funny that these 2 were the lowest voted / last picked... But are, in my opinion, the best of the lot.

Octavia

I haven't watched this in years! Probably since I was around 11 years old so I'm looking forward to seeing if it lives up to my memories!

Charlie West

100%

James W.

Little bit of Harry Potter as well. Dumbledore, Rita Skeeter and Uncle Vernon.

Cindy

Ichabod is a very well known coward. Bith in the original tale that included him (the original headless horseman tale didn't have a hero) and in Disney's version called ichabod and Mr toad, he was a supreme coward. Part of the charm of the story was the whole coward vs ghost and the coward found a way to win. Kinda saying that anyone can be a hero

Now this is one zombie you can't kill with a head shot... The village of Sleepy Hollow actually does exist about 20 miles north of New York City. Washington Irving lived there and is buried there (I'm assuming his head is still attached to his body however).

Supposedly, the English and American accents as we know them today didn't actually exist at the time - linguists believe English-speakers on both sides of the pond spoke more rhotically (pronouncing their R's, closer to the modern American accent). It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution (plus influences from other languages) that the two drifted further apart.

more Tim Burton please!!! Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Big Fish ❀

Ninaofthe90s

Completely agree. Really happy that these two movies are being shown closest to Halloween.

Jan T

Exactly. The cast was perfect, and the accents completely made sense for the time period.

I really hoped to see Sleepy Hollow included this month, I’m so glad Rob and Trin picked it. It’s my favourite Halloween movie of all time. Tim Burton was the perfect director for this. πŸŽƒ I hope you’re feeling better very soon Trin.

I was in love with this film when it came out in the theater and it is still a good watch. It has aged well, mostly due to the fact that Tim Burton's movies are so stylized. Ray Park, the actor for Darth Maul in the Star Wars Episode 1 was the stunt/fight double for the Horseman. You can see it a bit in his flourishes with axe and sword. Ian McDiarmid who was the doctor that fornicated with the maid, is Palpatine/The Emperor; little Star Wars connections everywhere.

James W.

I adore this movie for how it's silly and fun but full of cheesy Halloween gore. It would make a lovely drinking game (whenever Ichabod faints or blood squirts or Horseman takes a head etc...) Loved it, thanks guys!

Jessi

I love the way Tim Burton crafted this... the atmosphere, the imagery, the struggle of shifting from superstition to science. Ichabod relying on reason while keeping a healthy regard for beliefs. Truth isn't always as it appears.

Octavia

Glad to get to the two Halloween themed movies for the month.πŸ‘» πŸ¦‡ πŸŽƒπŸ¦‰πŸͺ¦βš°οΈβ˜ οΈπŸ•ΈοΈπŸ•·οΈπŸ¦΄

Written in 1820, I do remember us reading it in school but I never watched the movie. Hope you feel better soon trin ❀️

Sherry Bandito

Yay! Happy Halloween month everyone. πŸŽƒπŸ‘»πŸ’€

Yes... at this point, America was only 20ish years past being the colonies of England. Most would still be 1st or 2nd generations out of Britain.

Octavia

I thought it was interesting when you questioned the English accents. The majority of Americans in "New England" in 1799 were from England so many of the accents had not yet been "Americanized" LOL!

Cindy

All right! I've been looking forward to this week most of all... Sleepy Hollow, and Nightmare Before Christmas on Saturday. These are proper classic Halloween movies. Thanks, Tim Burton.
