War of the Worlds (2005)

Comments

Also for a different take on Tom Cruise you should watch 'The Outsiders' it's from before he became a celeb so he's about 18 and not the main man, it also has Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Rob Lowe - definitely watch the anniversary edition though, original release is cut in a weird way that detracts from story

Charlotte

Just realised that both Robbie and Rachel are also in the Taken mini-series, never seen anyone react to that, definitely worth a watch on your sci-fi run - As for this one, really enjoyed this reaction, i like War of the Worlds, one of the first times i saw Dakota Fanning, she's a great across but so is her sister Elle, fantastic duo. I went to see it at the pictures when i was 14 with my friend, we went twice and because we'd seen it we were typical teens through 2nd watch and kept whispering to each other, unfortunately we got the uncontrollable giggles when the bodies started flowing past, we got some very odd looks for good reason!

Charlotte

My part of the world has no natural disasters and most of the powerlines go underground and the last blackout that i remember for like 10 years ago + i have a heat reserving furnace in my house, so i have just food and water for 3 days and then a single powerbank for my phone. I guess the more you have these things the more you prep for them.

sandrowitz

Wow. Thank goodness you are well

Jenny Lee Villanueva

I also have a supply of batteries, my husband makes sure it's up to date

Jenny Lee Villanueva

Saaaaaaaaame.

William

I've never NOT known anyone who doesn't have a supply of batteries, Rob. Being a Californian who also lived in Japan for a decade, not having a supply of batteries is flat-out bonkers. 🔦 Also, love this flick. Perhaps more than most.

William

Minority Report certainly is an excellent SF film.

Jan T

All great movies. I forgot about born on the 4th of July, they definitely need to watch the more Tom Cruise

Kim Magee

I like them both. The other one is definitely more sci-fi-ish to me

Kim Magee

Agreed. We have a drawer just for batteries, mostly for the kids, hand controls for the Xbox etc, but we also have many large power banks always charged and ready to go, And it definitely came in handy when the tree fell on our house and pulled the power line down over our exit and we were trapped in the house for over 24 hours with no power, you don't need an apocalypse for things to go wrong

Kim Magee

Are You So unprepared?? I HAVE A SUPPLY OF BATTERIES! I do live in California where Earthquake preparations are normal… But come on… the ALIENS, or the ZOMBIES ARE COMING!

Abby

I always enjoy Tom Cruise movies. The man knows hows to deliver. But for me, Minority Report is just a much better Sci-fi/Spielberg film than this one.

Octavia

Yeah, I was pretty sure I watched it with them but they didn't seem to remember in their oost movie conversation.

James W.

There's a reaction to it

Jenny Lee Villanueva

You guys mentioned the play and the old 50s movie but did you guys know about the novel beforehand?

Stephen Clarke

You are recognising the son from lost. He was in an episode with John locke on the weed farm

AlexH88

You've seen Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, so you know how great he is. But for more of his dramatic work I recommend Rain Man, Magnolia, Born on the 4th of July, Last Samurai or Jerry Maguire. He's great in every genre ❤

Ninaofthe90s

decent movie. but the original story is far superior

ezza

Tom cruise is even in a musical :)

Kim Magee

Yep every time they would say the birds killed them and laugh and I was thinking they don't realise how close they are lol, yes, we have earned our place on this planet. We have learnt to fight the bacterias that live here, they simply haven't

Kim Magee

Yeah, it was essentially the "common cold" that killed them. Like Uncle Morgan said, as soon as they started breathing our air they were doomed because their species hadn't developed the immunity to those germs over the millennia.

Michael Celia

While I think it could've been handled better, the whole ending twist is original to the HG Wells novel. Where Spielberg and co. succeeded was in the decision to set the whole story from the POV of the protagonist with little to no outside information (again like the novel). It makes each sequence that much more harrowing - you're not supposed to know what's going on because that's how it would be in real life. From a technical standpoint, this movie fires on all cylinders. Everyone talks about the initial invasion scene which is well done (as a native of North Jersey, seeing the Bayonne Bridge blown to bits is spine-chilling), but for me the highlight is the scene where they're driving down the highway, camera rotating around the van, passing in and out of it in a protracted single shot - I still don't know exactly how they did that.

Michael Celia

If you want to see Tom Cruise in dramatic roles, rain man is incredible, Jerry Maguire, The last samurai, cocktail, he has so many great movies

Kim Magee

Dakota Fanning is an amazing actress, she was also amazing in I am sam

Kim Magee

So the birds did kill them, bird flu, covid, swine flu, all the viruses we slowly evolved to endure

Kim Magee

'Wanda' is the sister of the Olsen Twins, no relation to Dakota Fanning :)

Foof

There was a post earlier that mentioned the 1953 War of the Worlds, which was really good. If you haven't seen that version you may not have recognized that the two older people, the grandparents, at the end standing in the doorway were the actors from that original film, Gene Barry and Anne Robinson.

Cindy

Tom cruise is awesome, so is Top Gun Maverick, better than Top gun, he is so good in Rock of ages

Kim Magee

They have

Kim Magee

Love ‘The Great’. It’s brilliant, wacky, and wild. The cast is wonderful. Id love to see it here one day.

Jan T

Tom Cruise doesn't feel vulnerable in many roles, he is usually *HIM*. For me he is his best when he deviates from that a bit. Another role that comes to mind is "Edge of Tomorrow. If you haven;t already seen it, it is a good one and in the US at least they recently added it to Netflix.

James W.

This is my second favourite Tom Cruise movie, and the first time I saw how incredibly talented Dakota Fanning is. P.S. she is not an Olsen (Aka Wanda's sister) but she does have a sister that acts who is also incredible. For anyone interested I recommend watching, "The Great" if you want to see Elle Fanning. Thanks for the awesome reaction Rob & Trin, and thank you to everyone who voted for this film in the poll!

Kale

Probably

Kim Magee

Dakota Fanning is a great actress, she is also great in I am Sam which is an amazing film

Kim Magee

I'm also halfway through the reaction and wanted to comment the same :)

Chris B

I wonder if it depends on which one you see first? I saw the old one several times in the 50 odd years before this one came out. Lol.

Amos T Fairchild

Top gun Mavericks a great film

Kim Magee

I prefer this one

Kim Magee

Love this, gotta wait to watch it til tonight :)

Kim Magee

I’ve always enjoyed this one. Tom Cruise is appreciated as an action star, but underrated as an actor. He and the two young actors playing his children all gave fantastic performances here. And yes please for a Top Gun Maverick reaction. You won’t be disappointed.

Jan T

I remember being disappointed watching this film having read the book first. But I guess that's the norm as most people's imaginations can be more epic than what is shown on film. And to be fair, it has to be condensed to 90 minute movie.

Rey

I loved Robbie and the little girl, her acting was incredible. If there is a second movie I need to check it out I’m interested in the lore of this world. I’m happy Robbie survived I just wish we got to see more of him before the end

James

The plot fits a 1950s style film a lot better, and the change to the machines already being buried doesn't work for me, especially buried and undetected in the middle of town. Not that it's bad, I just prefer the other. Suits the material.

Amos T Fairchild

One of my top-5 favorite movies! I am very excited to watch it with you!

Julia

is it?

Ayleids

Sobbing uncontrollably rn

Mitch

It's sad that the 1953 film is better than this one.

Amos T Fairchild

The guy who plays Tom Cruise's teenage kid was in an episode of Lost (the one where Locke is working in that community and the guy he picks up on the side of the road is an undercover cop). Edit: nvm, should've watched the entire video before commenting

kalindiinga28

What a throwback. Excited!

Chris Reed

Finally!! One of my all-time favs!
