FIRST TIME WATCHING: X-Men First Class (2011)

Comments

This is by far the best x-men movie so far. It has a great script and excellent characters.

Ninaofthe90s

She's also in Star Wars episode II and Troy.

Célia Boisson

You guys gonna watch AGENTS OF SHIELD?

Dexifae

Rob's reaction to Trin saying "Finger him" had me laughing for minutes. I had to keep replaying it 😂😂

Ae Jae Meade

I figured someone would comment this after the "chest Cyclops" comment, LOL. Love this movie!

Carrie Smith

Yeah Fassbender kind of when full Irish at the end there. I love his accent so I don’t mind.

Vili

The next one is even better!

HappyFunJenn

Haha, that works I guess. I didn't know they did a new retcon, I just remember that one from like 25y ago in X-Men Unlimited 1 or 2. I preferred his old simpler origin as an orphan but whatever, it's X-Men, drama is the fuel of that whole series.

James W.

The Wolverine (Extended Cut, if possible) X-Men: Days of Future Past (Rogue Cut, if Possible) X-Men: Apocalypse Logan I might get attacked for saying this, but I actually didn't care for Dark Phoenix. For different reasons, but for one it just retconed too many things in a way where it conflicts a lot with the other movies like Days of Future Past and Logan, which are way better movies imo. Obviously I can't discuss what without getting into spoilers though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's after Logan when in release order anyway isn't it?

RabidSloth

Can’t wait for days of future past. Crazy that they cast these roles perfectly twice

Ben

I believe timeline wise that dark Phoenix and New mutants are before Logan

Tatumness

She’s been known to be Nightcrawler mom for a long time but the recent retcon in the comics is that she is actually his (shapeshifter) father and Destiny is his mother— Azazel is basically removed from the family

Tatumness

This, yes. I've seen some reactors skip/miss The Wolverine and just go straight to Days of Future Past. So I'm glad that someone mentioned it, since it definitely shouldn't be skipped imho. The Wolverine also has an Extended Edition, if they can find it, but the theatrical is still good.

RabidSloth

Yeah, Zoe Kravitz! She's been in a bunch of stuff, most recently, and notably, as Selina Kyle in the Robert Pattinson 'The Batman". Even though she has very little dialogue I love her as one of the runaway concubines in Fury Road; she was beautiful and fierce; perfect fit for that movie. I also dug her in the short lived High Fidelity show on Hulu; it was a fun take on that movie/book.

James W.

Rob has new Raven after finnishing The 100 this week🤣And its not even downgrade... u know what i mean🤣🤣or Rob knows🤣🤣Already i guess his favourite character

23p23 41

That's where I have seen her before. Thank you!

Bradley Weeks

X-Men and Shaw aside, the film is fairly accurate portraying the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. US Navy formed a blockade near Cuba and did have a standoff, so to speak, with the Russian Navy carrying missiles to Cuba. There is an excellent movie about this with Kevin Costner titled Thirteen Days. On a lighter note, there is a comedy-drama about how Floridians dealt with the crisis, since Florida is only 90 miles, or approx 144 Kilometers from Cuba, in Matinee with John Goodman.

Cindy

The Wolverine next and Days of Future Past: Rogue Cut after?!

Tatumness

Well, not necessarily it depends on the speed you can adapt at and how strong an adversity you face. For example in real life the birds from the Cernobyl exclusion zone have adapted to the environment as far as i understand, but you can't put a bird in a nuclear reactor and expect it to survive. Maybe it's a poor example but the principle is the same. Also, maybe at some point we could do Cernobyl since it's a mini-series, though i believe Trin would be sad so I'm hesitant.

Deathhead

I would like to make a suggestion for when you watch X-Men: Days of Future Past to look for the Rogue Cut. It is the best version of that film.

Leosunfire23

I would think that “Adapt to survive” should technically be invincibility

James

Definitely my second favorite X-Men movie 🔥 Btw Darwin was the most powerful mutant there lol. That shouldn't have killed him and it was very controversial but he wasnt popular so its whatever

james moore

"Let's just say I'm Frankenstein's Monster." Rob "Great voice." Me 💓

Anthony Fioravaniti

Love this kind of trivia. Awesome ty!

Anthony Fioravaniti

By the way did you realise that 'Angel' also played 'Leta Lestrange'?

Foof

Definitely one of the better X-Men films. I like how it uses a real-life event - the Cuban missile crisis - as part of the plot...and the reveal of Magneto ultimately being the cause of Xavier's paralysis is well done (even if it's a "ret-con" from the original trilogy).

Michael Celia

The woman who stripped down to her lingerie is Rose Byrne an Australia actress, she was in things like X-Men the internship, bad neighbours

Kim Magee

Happy to see the continuation of the X franchise! Long road yet

trlb

Michael Fassbender is so so good in that role...🙏😊

Ninaofthe90s

The coin scene always gives me chills

Schmaster

Good movie, also Rob and Trin, Alex is supposed to be Scott's (Cyclopse's) brother, their last name is Summers. Also the next movie in release order(the same order you follow) is The Wolverine.

Deathhead

I would have watched this sooner but Microsoft got hit hard and made my job went down for 5 plus hours. I"M SO READY FOR FIRST CLASS!!!!

adam99x

I respect another watcher who like to info dump. If I have to be cursed with all of this precious trivia, I gotta get it out somewhere.

James W.

Not sure if you caught it as I know keeping trrack fo all the names is daunting but, Havok's real name is Alex Summers, who is Scott Summers (Cyclops') older brother, so those observations about how his powers were similar to Cyclops were spot on. They don't really belabor it but just wanted to say the similarity in their powers wasn't a coincidence. Darwin gets "killed" similarly in the comics but the energy doesn't destroy him. He adapts into pure energy and sort of dissipates. Folks assume he is obliterated. Later he comes back and is stupid powerful. I always hoped they would bring him back in the films in some capacity but they never do. In the comics they retconned Mystique to be Nightcrawler's mother, so the implication in this film is that at some point she and Azazael get down because Nightcrawler has the same power set as him and the blue skin of Mystique. Again, they never do anything with it in the movies that I remember; we never see Nightcrawler or Azazael in the forms ever again but it was a nice easter egg for comics fans. X-Men is fairly hard to adapt because most film writers/producers don't have the discipline to stop themselves from endlessly introducing new mutants in every entry and then not being able to give them a meaningful arc. It's such a deep roster of characters I think they get lost in the sauce a bit but the core story in the mainline X-Men films is solid. They get a bit wonky later but still 100% watchable. You guys don't need more stuff to watch but he X-Men animated and X-men 97 series are still probably the closest in accuracy and tone to the comics. They get a bit bogged down too but sometimes that show just nails it. I also highly recommend the show Legion, which is another live action take of deep cuts X-Men character. It is a very stylized/atmospheric take on it but the execution and cast are top notch. It only ran for 2 short seasons but it was good. Something else to add to a poll. I look forward to seeing what Marvel does with X-Men now that they have the rights back. If it was me in charge of it I would get a team like the Duffer Brothers to do it as they took some inspiration from the 80s/90s X-Men for their story for Eleven in Stranger Things. Or Noah Hawley who did Legion.

James W.

Also a lot of the inconsistencies are explained away in the future 👀 … just gotta watch and see lol

Cynthia

“Finger his mind” 🤣

Cynthia

Justice for Darwin. I would like to think he’s still alive in some form or another.

Schmaster

This was actually the first X-men movie I ever watched it’s nice to come back and see it again after watching the others. This was some much needed backstory I loved seeing how it started, this just makes the other movies so much more tragic.

James

you know your stuff! 👍👍

blorgins

I was just saying the order the sequels went in not to watch them back to back

Eff Your Prime Numbers Jared(Brandon)

The Wolverine Extended Days of Future Past The Rogue Cut Deadpool 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse Logan 2017 And finally Deadpool 2 extended

Aldo Gonzales

There's actually 2 more wolverine movies "The Wolverine" and "Logan" in that order

Eff Your Prime Numbers Jared(Brandon)

Years before Kevin Bacon appeared as himself in The Guardians’ Holiday Special, he portrayed Sebastian Shaw. He’s one of the few mutants who technically doesn’t have a codename, but the closest thing he has to one in the comics is the Black King. It’s interesting to see that Erik had only been able to use his powers when he focused on negative emotions like anger. However, after meeting Charles he realized he could also use positive emotions from happier times in his youth. As someone who plays RPG’s, I can interpret rage as darkness and serenity as light. Charles was telling Erik to look for the twilight which is their meeting ground. Overall, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender did a fantastic job portraying the younger versions of Charles and Erik. They did their best to portray two characters that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir lan McKellen had already established. Both Charles and Erik delivered good arguments, especially when they were playing chess for the first time (which is also a callback to the end of the first movie). Neither side is entirely right or wrong. It almost feels like Steve and Tony in Civil War. There are humans who would accept them and be more than willing to coexist, but there are also many who would fear and oppose them. Darwin’s nickname is based on the theory of evolution called Darwinism which English naturalist Charles Darwin took part in establishing. Darwin’s birth name is Armando Muñoz, and he made his comic debut in 2006. Lucas Till always wanted to portray a superhero, but he jokingly said he didn’t want to portray Beast because he didn’t want to go through all that makeup. Lucas instead got Alex Summers/Havok while Nicolas Hoult ended up getting Hank McCoy/Beast. This movie was directed by Matthew Vaughn. After this, he would go on to direct Kingsman: The Secret Service which you’ve already seen. Up next are Wolverine 2013 followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past. I’m letting you know ahead of time both of them have extended editions that you won’t find on Disney Plus. You’ll have to rent them, but The Wolverine extended is a bit more R-rated and Days of Future Past extended adds more context to the story with 17 minutes of previously unreleased footage.

My 2nd favorite x-men movie, lets gooo
