Not just how amazing they looked, but I saw an interview or documentary or possibly DVD extra, where they described the lengths they went to in order not to add too much mass to the transformed form.

When we went to see this in the theater, she was so upset at the end because she thought Optimus was really going to die. They really did a great job with it and yes Optimus Primes's voice is iconic. As much as I love this one, the 2nd one is my favorite.
