FIRST TIME WATCHING X-Men (2000)

Actually.... Mutation 'is' evolution. They are basically the same thing. A population of lifeforms exists in a habitat, and every time offspring are born, there are small variances in the new members of that population. Mutations. Most of these variances are inconsequential, but every now and then the differences are impactful enough to make a difference in the way the new member of the population survives compared to the others. Maybe its more capable of evading predators, able to go where the others can't, or it can more aptly handle environments more extreme than its own... something that gives it a better chance of surviving compared to others of its kind..... When that happens the new member of that population has a better chance of staying alive to procreate, and if given enough time, and enough generations born with this specific mutations, it becomes the dominant version of it's kind. That, in a nutshell, is evolution. The mutations that are impactful enough to give a member of a species a better chance to pass along it's genes to future descendants, and thus change the course of it's entire species. That's why humans are generally more at an evolutionary standstill compared to lesser species... because there isn't much that threatens our survival. We have technologically built a society for ourselves where our survival really isn't as dependent on random mutation anymore.

This doesn't have the tag Movie ;-)

Célia Boisson

These movies are so nostalgic for me, I always enjoyed them for what they were but I was also never quite satisfied. I have been a big fan of x-men since I was a kid and these movies did not do most of the characters justice sadly. Professor X, Magneto and Wolverine being the main exceptions. Can't wait to see what the MCU does with them.

DracoMint

OH SHIT! NO WAY!!! 🙈

You are correct. This was written by THE David Hayter AKA Solid Snake

Jaedon Manton

A list of mutants who can die, 1. All of them. End of list. :-D Just some are tougher to kill than others.

Rob kept saying that Magneto could have sabotaged Cerebro ages ago, which is probably true, but at the beginning of the movie, he told Charles to just stay out of his way. It seems he did not want to take action against his old friend unless he had to. He only just did it now because Charles was interfering with his plan, so he was taking out the opposition. The X-Men were created in the 60s as an analogy of the Civil Rights Movement in the US. About how people would discriminate and fear-monger people that weren't like them, just for the how they were born. Charles was an analog for MLK and Erik for Malcolm X. Both friends and on the same side with very different views of how things should be done. One by more peaceful means while the other was more militant. Both have their advantages, IMHO, depending on the circumstance. By the time this movie came out, the analogs for mutants became more synonymous to the LGBTQ community and a lot of them adopted the X-Men to be about them. It fits there also, but many people were attracted to the X-Men who just felt like they never really fit in or felt like outcasts, geeks, nerds or just odd. Everyone feels that way sometimes and I think that's why they have been popular all over. The X-Men themselves were like people in those discriminated groups that could "pass" for "normal" people, like some light-skinned black people, etc. but there are others that can't "pass" and they'd be ones more like Mystique, Toad and Sabertooth. There was a whole subset of those people in the comics who couldn't pass as humans that created their own society underground and called themselves the Morlocks (from H.G. Well's "The Time Machine"). Superhero movies have obviously become more refined since this, but considering superhero movies before this, this was, as Charles would say, "a leap forward," and showed that they could do a superhero team movie, which hadn't been done successfully before this. Not to mention it took the subject matter seriously, which Hollywood had a hard time doing before this and a lot of attempts were always tongue-in-cheek and winking at the camera or just very cheesy/B-movies. Granted, I loved those too 'cause they were fun, but I still wanted someone to take the genre seriously and this was the beginning of that.

Thadman

Yes! I love X-men! 😂 I hope you guys watch X2 and X-men: The Last Stand! I actually liked the 3 movies… well let’s see! 🙏🤞

Nora

Days of Future Past and Logan? So much to come. it's a big journey ahead.

Jeff1990

I think personally this film felt a lot better when I first watched it because it was before all the Marvel was released, and I am very fond of the characters especially Wolverine and rouge, but there is also a lot of complex characters this is probably not one of the best X-Men

Kim Magee

So, kind of like a MagLev train?

Michael Celia

I made this comment on the discord just now, but you were first! Respect!

Kale

So nostalgic, what about... "Last time on Dragonball Z!" I think they had X-men by a few years. The 80s and 90s were so great!

Kale

I think it's close. It's just under the umbrella of "being hated for something that you're born with/as"

Taryn Clay

I love Logan, Hugh Hackman is awesome

Kim Magee

Magneto controls metal by creating and manipulating magnetic fields. He is able to 'fly' by creating a magnetic field around himself which repels the natural magnetic field generated by the Earth. By manipulating this magnetic field around his body he is able to move himself through the air. He's not in reality flying at all. He is being pushed away from the surface of the earth in the same way that if you bring the north magnetic poles of two magnets together they will repel each other. Oh, and wanted to add . . . loved the reaction the two of you are awesome thanks for the content can't wait for the next one.

Arcane.Joe

The X-Men franchise is kind of hit or miss. Please stick with it. The highs are well worth the lows.

Simon Williams

I can't wait for you guys to get to X-Men: First Class

Paola Villegas

Been waiting for these

John Borek

Fingers crossed folk don't dump spoilers on you. Even stuff from the comics could be potential future spoilers.

GoodDocGonzo

Release order is just better. And that how R&T and many others like to do things

SamT

I have a soft spot for Origins as its pretty fun and Dark Phoenix is the opposite in my opinion

Josh B.

Fun fact, unless I’m mistaken, the guy who plays Toad also plays Darth Maul in Star Wars

BM

honestly i vote you guys watch X-men: First Class before all the others... it gives more meaning and context to everything

Asd JuasJuas

Like the MCU movies, some of the X-Men movies can be a bit hit or miss. The original is actually one of the weaker ones in comparison to the others (imho). But it's the original, so, you know. Have to start there lol. X-Men 3 is also considered to be a bit not great. I'm sure it's already been mentioned before, but the Release Order is: X-Men X2: X-Men United X-Men: The Last Stand X-Men: First Class The Wolverine X-Men: Days of Future Past X-Men: Apocalypse Logan X-Men: Dark Phoenix My personal opinion is that it works a bit better for consistency with The Wolverine and X-Men: First Class swapped though. And I'm sure this has already been said before, but I would recommend just skipping X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Not only is it widely considered to be the worst movie in the franchise, and has been relentlessly made fun of for it, but it's also non-canon and thus full of inconsistencies to the rest of the movies. Side-note: I've actually never seen Dark Phoenix before.

RabidSloth

Yes, David Hayter also voiced Snake in Metal Gear Solid. He worked has Bryan Singers assistant for a bit and worked on the script for X-men when they got to make the movie. One of his contributions to the X-men universe is Magneto's helmet being able to block telepathy, which was never a thing in the comics before this.

AzraRillian

Watched this for the 1st time with you guys and it was pretty interesting! I wasn't crazy about it, but it's made me intrigued to know where this story goes. The concept and messaging landed with me way more than the characters and execution of the story, but I'm sure I'll grow to enjoy it!

sierra's reaction corner

Love this movie - I remember watching it in college and thinking the visual effects were awesome. However, I've always had an issue with the public's reaction to mutants being a metaphor of discrimination of various demographics in the real world. It's not exactly a fair comparison...as a gay person, I don't shoot lasers from my eyes.

Michael Celia

To be fair, this was probably the first serious take on superheros in Hollywood, as opposed to the more cartoonish Batman and Superman films. They were still experimenting on what worked and what didn't. Notably, this movie is where Kevin Feige - the head honcho of the MCU - got his start as an associate producer.

Michael Celia

You are close, when Magneto was landing on the train they show a quick close up of his shoes and you can see silver metal bands around the heel. Also, when he shoots Rouge with the syringe you can see his silver metal belt. He definitely always has metal on his person so he can levitate/fly.

X-Men: The Animated Series from the early 90’s was unique for a Saturday morning cartoon, in that most episodes ended on cliffhangers and you had to watch the next week to see what happened. Who else couldn’t wait to hear the words “Previously on X-Men” every Saturday morning. If Rob only caught episodes every now and then, it’s no wonder he couldn’t follow what was going on 🤦‍♀️😜😁 The series is credited for being way ahead of its time for a cartoon with it’s serialized storytelling, as well as for the mature subject matter. The show wasn’t afraid to tackle political and social issues. As you saw in this movie, Magneto is a holocaust survivor. Wolverine was brutally experimented on. Mystique mentions being afraid to go to a school as a child. Then there’s the main issues of discrimination and intolerance that the Mutants face every day. All of that and more was explored in the animated series. It certainly was heavy watching for a kids show.

CheshireKat528

This was Stan Lee’s first theatrical Marvel cameo. He had made appearances on television and had a guest star appearance in non-Marvel related movie as himself in the 90’s. There had only been 2 other Marvel Comics based movie released in theaters prior to this movie. Howard the Duck released in theaters in 1986 and Blade released in theaters in 1998. Stan Lee was supposed to make a cameo in Blade, but it got cut. Ian McKellen was Magneto before he was Gandalf, this movie was released over a year before LOTR:Fellowship… It was funny to hear Rob say he was having a hard time seeing him as a bad guy, when I first watched Fellowship, I expected him to be a bad guy because he was perfect at being the super villain Magneto 😆 Trin was correct, Deadpool did wear the Cerebro helmet in part 2 when he was sitting on a couch talking to Colossus. The Deadpool movies are definitely worth a rewatch when you get to them in release order.

CheshireKat528

I absolutely cannot wait for this franchise. It definitely gets better as it goes on. I'm hoping for all the movies not just Xmen 1-3. Hoping for it all. Well different give more meaning to the Deadpool joke of Stewart or McCovy lol. But as aside from that without saying much, I'm hoping for the long haul cuz damn does it get good

Ae Jae Meade

probably not worth a rewatch on patreon, but YES it would be awesome to revisit the deadpool movies in the xmen movie release order. they are so much more fun when you know the references.

Darren P

Ha... that was the most underwhelmed that I've seen them. This movie hasn't held up as well as it could have... the pacing is off, some illogical plotting, emotional beats like Logan/Jean feel rushed out of nowhere, Halle Berry has nothing to do. I think they'll enjoy later movies more.

Octavia

I’d love for you guys to do some more X-men movies I’ve wanted to watch them all for a while but I’ve only watched this one so far and it’s already some of my favorite “superhero” stuff I love the unique powers they show off. Also my theory for how magneto can fly is that he has steel toe boots on so he can just move himself around freely

James

Really hope you guys have fun with this whole series!

trlb

Oh yay

Kim Magee

Oooh I've really been looking forward to this one. The Avengers are great and all, and had a bigger budget, and more modern effects, but the X-Men always resonated with me more personally, and are my favorite franchise to come out of Marvel. I loved The Animated Series when I was a kid back in the 90s. The premises for Harry Potter and X-Men and are actually quite similar. How you could be a kid, from any walk of life, and just wake up one day to discover that you have special powers. Then you get to go to an awesome school, with other kids, also from all walks of life, and learn how to use your powers together. I really like that setup in both of them. Plus they're each led by a great "headmaster". Albus Dumbledore and Charles Xavier =)

RabidSloth

Couldn't have said it better!

Emmy

I’ve been waiting so long for them to watch these movies, all the hype, you guys make every movie way better, I’ve been subbed for a little over half a year now I think, and it’s been worth it, you guys do more with better quality, thank you

Sand Man

Let's go 🥰
