FIRST TIME WATCHING Forrest Gump (1994)

Comments

It’s time baby!

Ben

Love you guys! I passionately recommend Being There 1979. It's Forrest Gump but with Peter Sellers instead of Tom Hanks. Directed by one of the best American directors of the 1970's Hal Ashby

Ben

I remember I used to say that I was going to create my own religion based on Tom Hanks and call it Hanxism. :-D Although I still have to see Captain Phillips.

Thadman

That and the Gary Sinise legs thing. Actually I think that was the most amazing thing talked about at the time 'cause it was new technology to be able to do that.

Thadman

It was said, by the author, years after the movie came out and became very popular, that the virus Jenny got wasn't specified in the book nor the movie, but he was talking about Hepatitis, like you said Rob. I'm not sure but I think he said Hep C. Everyone, at the time of the movie, assumed he was talking about HIV, but he said that's not what he was thinking of when he wrote it. If you guys ever watch "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008) with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, the book was written by the same author as the Forrest Gump book and it's a similar over all spanning of a life type story, but different circumstances of the main character since it's a "curious case." That's all I'll say, but I do recommend it and it did make me cry.

Thadman

Jenny said she wanted to be like Joan Baez. Baez was a big folk singer especially in the 1960's. My dad really like her.

Matt O'Keefe

This was such a great reaction to such a classic! So many legendary moments in this film, and yes, so many memes ha, but it's really true that when you see where the meme came from, in context, it becomes much more meaningful and often more serious. Can't help but cry all throughout this entire film. With every rewatch, it still manages to make me cry. Forrest is such a pure hearted man. I loved seeing how moved you both were by this! And it was refreshing that you understood Jenny because a lot of people don't seem to understand. Her treatment of Forest and her wanderings throughout her life make sense bc of what happened to her and her pain. So many unfortunately have been through what she went through and this world would be a better place if more people understood why people act the way they do, that it often comes from deep pain and we can show understanding and love and compassion. The ending of this film breaks me every time. Forrest Gump is just one of those films that can be rewatched so many times and you can still get more out of it every time. Pure hearted, simple, yet also there's a lot of depth packed into it. Thanks for a wonderful reaction! I had fun rewatching it with you guys!

Chrissy

I think she loves him but I don't think she knew that he was capable of real love himself it wasn't your normal kind of love it was like a best friend Kind of Love I don't think she was using him because she had a good heart from the very beginning she was just abused in mixed up and trying to find a way through all the mess

Kim Magee

Not trying to argue but I don't think you understood Jenny. She didn't feel she was good enough for Forrest and saw herself as damaged goods. Doesn't mean she didn't love him the entire time.

Julia Ashley

Jenny was driving me nuts...lol ...many were mad at her for proposing to Forest, after she became sick, and not trying to find Forest after she had his kid....I love this movie and happier to watch it with you both.cheers!

Kevin Mahoney

Such a powerful and poignant movie!

Anthony Ancona

Yeah, the news was just as bad then at actual investigation 😂

Dorinda Schaper

One of my top 3 movies of all time!!! So happy to watch it again with you guys! 🧡 I always felt that Jenny did love Forrest, but she hated herself. She didn't feel she deserved his love. So many 'what ifs?' ... powerful movie on a lot of levels but so cleverly written it seems simple.

Dorinda Schaper

I agree. People act so indignant toward Jenny like going through the abuse has no effect on the child. She never felt good enough for him and therefore tried to push him away in favor of what she thought she deserved.

Jacqui O'Brien

Rob and Trin, if you like Forrest Grump, you’ll LOVE Being There

Ben

I know they had one on Navy Pier in Chicago. I don’t know if it’s still there.

Melissa Williams

Especially with Forrest's response to it. That some times there's just not enough rocks.

Anika

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. As an artist living in an industry town, and someone who has survived multiple open heart surgeries, I'm prone to have existential angst over my destiny or my purpose. So it moves me to see that Forest never let the outside world influence him or his thinking. Rob is totally right that any other person would have been destroyed by either feast (meeting multiple presidents, getting war medals, being a millionaire) or famine (having a low IQ, losing one's legs), but Forest only focused on the good. "Normal" people wanted to assign a purpose or a narrative to his actions ("Are you running for world peace? For the environment?") because they want to make sense of a volatile world. They wanted to explain his success, but Forest did what felt right for him. It's also easier for people to follow another person. To be inspired and try to keep pace with somebody they think has it all figured out. Yet, Forest "just felt like running." He kept things simple and never let the past haunt him (Jenny) or let the future pressure them to fulfill a purpose (Lt. Dan). Forest stayed present and focused on what was right in front of him: the stars, the sunrises and sunsets, and Jenny. By the way, thank you so much for empathizing and understanding Jenny. Shame and self-sabotage are so real when one has experienced abuse, especially at such a young age. The scene where Jenny throws rocks at her childhood house... It's a virtually wordless scene, but it gets me every time.

Karen Shih

I don’t usually jump into full length reactions, but I knew this one would be wonderful. So glad y’all saw it :)

Alex Thrailkill

First time seeing this, destroyed me

Nuke

This film just gets me all the time. Tom Hanks is just a treasure and I love the way the storytelling is presented with Forrest being apart of historical moments. Just one of my favorites of all time.

what a beautiful comment! <3

lelmDR.WHO

It's been a LONG time since I've watched this movied in full, usually I just catch snippets on TV or watch edited reactions. This was such a treat! I had forgotten bits and I'm just a lot older and it hits home in different ways. I always cry when Forrest meets his son. Just that moment and Tom Hanks incredible, and just so GENUINE, acting...But watching it full length with you two who are super emethetic people had me tearing up the whole time with you. It's such a stunning film and was a a real joy. Thank you for sharing your first experience of it so I could re-apreaciate it through y'all! <3

I love this movie... I've always hated Jenny for what she did to forrest when i was younger. But now knowing so many people who have dealt with trauma and abuse it gives me a different mindset today. I still feel like the only reason she introduced forrest and his son was because she was dying and it seemed like she was doing so much better when he came back to her and she should have found him sooner knowing how alone he was in his life. I still question if she really loved him sometimes or if she was just using him.

Angelina Sargent

The feather is a beautiful metaphor for Forrest. He lives his life just floating along going where it takes him.

Tylor Smith

I'm also not a fan of this movie. Although I adore the purity and innocence of Forrest, the schtick that placed him in historical/pop culture events wore thin quickly and became more annoying than amusing.

Brenda Schmitt

I don’t like this movie. I really wanted to like it, but found myself bored with the movie after waiting an hour into the movie for something interesting to happen. I was curious how you would like this movie.

Angela

Ahhh I can’t wait to watch this reaction!!

Chrissy

Not sure if you've heard the song Lump by The Presidents of the United States of America, but Weird Al has a parody called Gump. You should check it out now that you've seen this movie.

J Scott Page

They should've names this move the tear jerker lol. Thats all it is

james moore

I've seen this movie a lot, years ago. It was one of mine & my boys favorites to watch together. I think it's why I haven't watched any reactions to it, so far. I thought I was over it. But, for some reason, when I started this with you guys, it all came back to me about how great this movie is, and I was excited to see it again, and watch it with you. I remembered it so well that I could quote stuff in my head as I watched. lol No matter how many times I see Gary Sinise in other movies, I always see Lt. Dan. You might remember him from The Green Mile as the Prosecutor that told the story about his family dog biting his daughter. You are so absolutely right about Jenny. When she threw those rocks at the house, I was right there with her...again. Everyone interprets the meaning of this movie in different ways, but we were shown that Forrest had no hate; prejudices; filters; and just allowed good things (miracles) to happen. He went with the flow of life, and was rewarded for it every time. It's idealistic, but the message is clear, right? So good. In the end, I'm glad this won the vote.

angie808

The boy that played younger Forrest actually had that speech pattern in real life so Tom Hanks spent a lot of time with him to learn his way of speaking to maintain it with the character. That same boy grew up to serve four years in the U.S. Army infantry, which included an 18 month tour of duty in Iraq.

Driver ED

Yup, crying each time for this film. Saw this when it came out in the theaters. So many details of history woven into this beautiful fictional man just to show us how simple life is and how true happiness is lived but loving others.

kimburley

This movie is a real ride. I like that you too could see that Jenny was really hurting, and that's why she was the way she was with Forrest. Most reactors hate her for what she did to him, leaving so many times. That was the same bus driver. I think Forrest was in his late 30s by the end of the film. So, if the bus driver was in her 20's when he first went to school, she would have been in her 40s or 50s. (I'm not sure how old she was, in the beginning). But she wouldn't have been an old woman, I don't believe. Jenny is the only one that Forrest got incorrectly, most likely because of how upset he was. He said that she died on a Saturday. But if you track the date that was on the gravestone, she actually died on a Monday.

Anika

Have watched this a few times before, and really enjoyed watching again and your reaction. Such a good movie, many cheesy moments in history. one thing that always stood out to me, and really showed how little he was respected by those who didn't really know him, was when he was running and he was referred to as "a gardener from Alabama" when by that stage in his life he was a football champ, war hero, ping pong world champ and a multi millionaire businessman.

Elle

I didn't like this movie before, but decided to give it a second chance with y'all. I was surprised that it actually wasn't bad this time around. Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. is actually a restaurant, down in the south U.S. at least, and it was inspired by this movie. The food's pretty good, my boyfriend and I go occasionally. Glad y'all enjoyed the movie.

Jessicah Layfield

Awesome movie and reaction

Sherry Bandito

This movie as with anything Tom hanks and Sally fields have anything to do with turns out golden .

Lee Shafer

I'm 39 years old, I don't get emotional easily, but this movie have been making me cry every time for over 20 years now. It's the only movie I have ever given a 10/10 on IMDB.

Chris B

Well, this is amazing!

Count Monte-Cristo

such an amazing movie, I've already seen it twice and still, i could not hold the tears back

Vilgot Backteman

One of my favorite movies. Seeing Aunt May after this hits differently.

Johann Miranda V.

Such an iconic movie and great reaction. This film did win 6 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Tom Hanks. It also won Best Visual Effects, primarily for the integration of Hanks into archival footage which at the time was considered groundbreaking.

Michael Celia

Tom Hanks is an incredible actor, but omg he has picked so many incredible films Castaway and Captain Phillips are such great movies and they break you, as well as the green mile, Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia, Apollo 13, and Sleepless in Seattle and there's a whole heap of other great films that he has done

Kim Magee

awww ❤️

Tom Hanks has been in a lot of amazing movies. Apollo 13, Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile, but I think this might be my favorite. I haven't seen this for quite awhile and I wasn't expecting to cry so much. I was tearing up from the very beginning with Trin. Great reaction as always Rob and Trin.

Bradley Weeks

This was amazing. Thank you two.

Danny Jasper

One of my dad's favorite movies. This brings me back.

Julia Ashley

This has been my favourite movie ever since the first time I saw it some 25 years ago. I watch it at least once a year, sometimes more than once. It holds a very special place in my heart. Thank you for a beautiful reaction and thank you for understanding Jenny's struggle so well. So many reactors missed it completely and just hated on her, never getting the point of her character. Thank you for letting me watch it again with you ❤️

Ramona

I don't cry at movies, but there is one very special one that touches my soul every time I see it. Glad you got to experience it for the first time

OnePlushyDude

My last name is Forst (no e) and in elementary school everyone said "run forrest run" to me. Pissed me off lol. Great movie though. :)

Rebeccaf87

My movie reaction in the evening, thank you!

Cindy Clarkson
