Great reactions, Trin and Rob! I’m old school, so ladies are mentioned first.
This is a terrific movie that had a release date (June 25, 1982) a couple weeks after “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” (June 11, 1982), and didn’t do well at the box office as people were more into the “Aliens are cute and funny” mindset. Also, “Blade Runner” (same release date as “The Thing”) didn’t do as well for the same reason. And John Carpenter’s adaptation of John W. Campbell, Jr.’s “Who Goes There?” follows it for the most part. But I think it would have been better if there wasn’t the shot of the spaceship crashing onto Earth at the beginning of the film. It sets it up as: the thing is an alien. Then, as you two did, the thing is a shapeshifter, when the Norwegians are trying to kill the dog. Without the spaceship scene, people are left with, “What the hell’s going on?” At least until MacReady, Childs, and Norris travel to the Norwegian’s dig site and see the spaceship.
The two of you also zeroed in on Doc or Garry as being the thing / alien (they weren’t) because of the keys and the spoiled blood. But what EVERY reactor I’ve seen hasn’t caught is when Bennings and Windows are bringing the thing into the storage room, Windows goes and gets the keys from Garry so they can lock the room. When Windows comes back, jingling the keys, he sees Bennings, panics, and drops the keys. At that point, anyone could have gotten the keys and sabotaged the whole blood storage. And then dropped the keys, or say they found them and given them back to Garry.
Also, it was Clark who took the scalpel and then attacked MacReady. Self-defense, not murder.
No, a sequel to this movie was not made. But a prequel was, titled “The Thing” in 2011. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it’s vastly inferior. First, it relied on CGI for most, if not all of the effects. Second, the movie had a feel of “How do we create set pieces for how the guys in this movie found things. Third, and please don’t call me a misogynist, I don’t think a Norwegian research station in Antarctica would cede leadership to a female grad student vs. you know, actual scientists.

I have seen so many reactions to this movie and NO ONE ever says anything about the noose hanging there while Blair says he's ok now

This is one of those rare cases where the remake is better than the original.

This movie was actually a remake of the original "The Thing From Another World" (1951) Starring James Arness as the alien.

I never get tired of watching people react to this movie. Especially the dog and defib scenes. 😂
It's hard to imagine the movie was panned when it first came out when both the effects and the story has has held up so well. It's a masterpiece of suspense.

I imagine us all bleary-eyed and wondering if 2 minutes is long enough before hitting refresh again. And since it is a 3 hr movie, it probably takes longer to render. *refresh*

It’s 3 AM Monday here and I’ve been awake since 11 AM yesterday (long shift) and I’ve just been sitting here anticipating lololol I’m about to fall asleep, probably right before it goes up and I’m mad I can’t keep my eyes open. But I edit myself and I know it takes a lot of time so I don’t blame them at all. Just so hyped

This is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time. It's right up there with the likes of Alien when it comes to special effects, atmosphere/tension, and soundtrack. This is one of the few cases where I really appreciate the ambiguous ending too. What a performance from that infected dog!

I love this movie to death. I watched it so many times on VHS as a teen.... but it had some big logic holes. You have a creature who is intelligent enough to build a flying craft from spare parts, and fly a spacecraft across star systems.... so you'd think the first thing it would do, when encountering a new groups of hosts, would be to break off a few pieces of itself and send them out into the snow to freeze themselves so that if things go wrong and these backwater planet hillbillies, who have some dynamite and a few guns, actually defeat you.... you aren't completely wiped out.

Well The Thing just overcame Windows firewall. It seems, Windows always was useless.

The 2011 follow-up film, also called The Thing, is a great companion film to the first one. It's not a remake. I'd highly recommend it.

Ok... for the record, Windows would have killed everyone if the movie hadn't gone the way that it did..... while everyone was tied up and Mac was having him take blood for the test, Windows is shown using the same scalpel, and just wiping it off on his pants before using it again on himself. One can assume he did the same after every blood sample.... which means, whichever person he cut previously, if that person was a Thing, then everyone afterwards got infected from the scalpel - since they didn't sanitize it.

There is a prequel to this movie about the previous events in the norweigan camp, it is from 2011

So I'm fluent in Norwegian and the start of the movie is always fun to watch with people who can and can't understand it in the same room. You will usually witness people pleading to not hurt the dog, however people who speak Norwegian usually go deadpan, silent and almost turn white. Det er en slags ting!

So this is one of my all time favourite horror movies of all time. It's also extremely rewatchable. You can watch it the first time and you are figuring out who's the thing. On a rewatch you now know who's infected but when exactly did everyone get infected. That's the genius of this movie. Who did sabotage the blood? Was Childs telling the truth at the end? If you pay extremely close attention you start to piece your own recollection of what exactly happened.

From producer Stuart Cohen, on the final scene:
"Most of you want to know who was who in the final scene. Unsurprisingly, there is no definitive answer but I can tell you what Bill Lancaster thought when he wrote it - he believed both men were human. He felt this was the most poetic way to end things - two individuals moved beyond exhaustion, framed in a tableau of fire and ice, having a last drink in the Antartica night before freezing to death. I subscribe to this view. I can not, however with 100% certainty tell you that John (Carpenter) agrees with this - what I can say is that given the fact this scene still bears the remnants of this massive re-working with many hands it is counterintuitive for me to think that there exists a hidden level of meaning that offers clues to identity (The J&B bottle being passed back and forth, Childs lack of breath in several cuts, etc.). Believe me, all we were trying to do was keep the scene in the movie."
But art takes on a life of its own.

The Thing is such a masterpiece of tension and paranoia from all the fear, uncertainty, and isolation. Also amazing are the practical effects. And not to be left out --- Kurt Russell's hair/beard. And because it leaves a good bit up to interpretation, like the final scene between Mac and Childs --- it's one of those great films that you can discuss and consider endlessly. Enjoyed watching with you.

HELL YES ! This is gonna be a treat. EVERYONE should see this movie if they're a horror/sci-fi fan, it's definitely a seminal movie in the genre. One of my favourites.
I love how every single person who reacts to The Thing has an "Awww" for the dog at the beginning, little do they know...
If you're Norwegian, the beginning almost gives away the whole plot, roughly translated, he's shouting "Get the hell away! It's not a dog! It's imitating a dog! It's not real! Get away, idiots!"
Rob (great name) Bottin was the genius behind the special effects, Bottin worked on The Thing seven days a week (including late nights) for a year and five weeks straight, producing every creature effect (with the exception of the transformed dog, which was partially done by Stan Winston). He put so much into the movie that, when he was done, he was admitted to hospital with exhaustion and pneumonia.
He did also nearly kill the crew at one point, in the chest collapse scene, and it's aftermath, they used melted bubblegum and plastic for the effects when the head separates from the body, unfortunately, the crew lit the gas-powered bar underneath Norris's head for continuity, and the heat caused the entire dummy torso to explode, it also let off dangerous fumes and everyone had to be evacuated.
Rob, Make sure you get that Norway joke in the YouTube version.
The most common read on the ending of "The Thing" is that Childs is most likely a Thing. Childs disappears for the entirety of the finale until the very end when he comes back with a pretty bogus excuse for why he was gone. "I thought I saw Blair. I went out after him and got lost in the storm," he says.
People also point out that you can see MacReady's breath for the entirety of their scene, but none comes from Childs when he speaks. Is this the clue that Childs is alien?
The game is ok but an old engine so it looks kinda crap.
There isn't a remake of The Thing but there is a prequel, it's good but there's way too much CGI used which is obvious, plus, if you've seen this one you pretty much know the outcome.
