FIRST TIME WATCHING Passengers (2016) Reaction!

Comments

They clearly would rather be together and die on the ship than share the auto doc and be completely alone for the rest of their lives just to see a new world! That would be a depressing life just to see a new planet.

Cliff

Lol looks the same everything in that clip is in the movie pretty much in that order, we saw both sides

Kim Magee

The original re-edit, Passengers rearranged, is approaching 5 million views. Hugely popular 'if only' as the better, darker, non-romantic story. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gksxu-yeWcU

BadCode

Rob and Trin, thanks for picking this one. JLaw and Pratt def have chemistry, check them out on Graham Norton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-Y4dIxGHj8

JM63

Uh, no. It's edited as a horror-like trailer from from the woman's point of view. Like many felt it should have been. It's a very popular perspective.

BadCode

I think the romance was further showing he was right in feeling they had a connection, like she felt she would have been friends with Lola? Or whatever her name was from so little info, he at least listen to her recordings and felt he knew her, the relationship gave the end a nice feeling as she then chose for herself, her life already seemed isolated considering her plans

Kim Magee

Looks the same to me it's just clips from the movie

Kim Magee

Not sure it was supposed to be that simple, I'd imagine the pods would play a role in connection with a main machine, after all the did revive them, which had a series of things happen

Kim Magee

I agree. The lonlieness he must have felt, not only then, but having to think, everyday, how many years of it he has to be alone. It could drive anyone to a little bit of madness. I don't blame him for doing it for the companionship alone. But, the romantic part of it could have been left out. It would have been better if they told the story of them just being companions, and nothing more. But then again, men are build differently than women, in regards to different needs, if you know what I mean. Frankly, I would have kept trying to get to one of the upper-level crew members. That would have been more helpful. But then again, the one that did come up out of hyper-sleep didn't make it, so, oh well. LOL! And you're right. She didn't actually go through the lonlieness that Jim had (a year), but just the prospect of it happening to her, scared the crap out of her.

angie808

Plenty of real people have the same criticism. You can see it here in this comment section. You can certainly see the even mix of it on reddit.

Wendy Sparks

Sure, JL is not going to just burn bridges, not during the initial release. But it's not her #1 movie regret for nothing. She's also clearly said that she wished she'd spotted the issue sooner. You don't have to agree, as I don't agree with you. But it's as valid a view as yours. Men take women's choices from them all the time to suit themselves. Kidnapping, rape, stalking, reproductive rights, etc... And no amount of 'I really tried to stop myself' makes it better. Selfish, horrific choices don't deserve to be rewarded in my book. Obviously plenty of people have taken the same issue with the film and found the message troubling... to not just be dismissed as complaining. At the the of the day though, this movie will always invite multiple interpretations.

Wendy Sparks

https://youtu.be/_bmQmCEF-8Q What if this was the passengers trailer? Hahaha

Angelina Sargent

I always hated how dumb they were in the ending, Jim stated literally near the beginning that it requires “special equipment” to put one into hibernation. And Aurora said can’t we build the POD that can put us into hibernation. MEANING, that the pods they in were only there to contain you and keep you alive and that likely people were moved into the pods AFTER being but into hibernation. Auroras pod was STILL in working condition, there was literally nothing wrong with it other than the fact Jim forced it to open. So all they needed was the special equipment right? Then boom here comes the auto-doc. So why didn’t Jim the engineer think of “ let’s put aurora into the auto-doc and have it put her into hibernation. Then I carry her back to her original pod and have it close back up. THEN I get into the auto-doc and have it put me into hibernation”

Tyrone Byrne

If think her comment about she would have been friends with the hybination woman was a nod to him just having a feeling aurora and him had a connection from seeing her, listening to her talking etc too

Kim Magee

Actually I was just reading about Jennifer Lawrence's comments and she defended the film but seemed to be responding to the people calling it out 4 the negative things they saw it and let's face it these days there's very little that someone isn't going to complain about

Kim Magee

The character made a selfish choice, he agonised over it for months, begged himself not to do it, I think some just can't picture that loneliness, I have twin girls, for one being alone if perfection, the other can't handle being alone at all, this isn't about a man taking what he wants, it's about a human being faced with an endless and long life alone, and as they said drowning and pulling down another with them, which in time she understood when facing the same fate herself

Kim Magee

100% I ignore critics and wait for real people reviews, critics often just try to get attention

Kim Magee

@Karissa Yeah, I think this could've been an amazing horror movie... if it stuck to its dark psychological themes. Especially with the bad guy wrapped in such an affable package. But instead it copped-out. And as a love story it sends a horrible message to men and women.

Wendy Sparks

I make up my own mind and take critics with a grain of salt. But I agree with the main criticism of this movie. Glorifying a man taking a woman's choices away to suit his own needs... and in the end being rewarded for it. When so many critics point out the same flawed message... one that I couldn't get past myself... well, where there smoke, there's usually fire. If you were a woman who had ever been stalked... you might see it differently, too.

Wendy Sparks

If you guys are into the Scientifically accurate space genre I can whole heartedly recommend as a tv show to watch in the future 'The Expanse'. I know a lot of people who weren't into the whole Sci-Fi genre but loved the Expanse and I think it was amazing. Great Reaction!

Max

The only thing this movie has going for it is the star quality of the cast. The story as a romance is creepy af. The woman is worn down until she just accepts the guy as her fate. Sad, disturbing. Exactly why some so-called nice guys believe they can have the woman they want if they keep pressing. Blech.

BadCode

It would've been great if he woke her up and then finds out she's gay lol Picking someone based on looks would be a huuuuuge risk

k4rizz4

@Wendy Now that would've been an intriguing movie

k4rizz4

Yeah I can't see it any other way lol

k4rizz4

Lmao I don't think that was the message, the message was clearly about needing companionship to survive not only physically but mentally.

Kevin Przy

Don't trust critics there's been more films that critics disliked that the average person liked rather than the opposite.

Kevin Przy

Sure... of all her big budget movies... this one just happens to be her #1 regret. For no other reason? She agreed with the criticisms. At the time, she said 'I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't spot it sooner.' She was careful to walk a line in her comments because of not burning bridges in her career PR game. After all Jim's manipulations... Aurora really had no choices... it basically glorifies Stockholm Syndrome. Which many reviews called out. Like it all you want. The actors are very charismatic. But for me it's a creepy male fantasy message. If Jim was unattractive, no one would be okay with what he did. And if Aurora was unattractive, he wouldn't have picked her. But it would make a great psychological horror movie.

Wendy Sparks

Movie itself is average (but simillar to what Rob said - you watch it for JL and CP. It still could have been a decent popcorn flick for me if not the message: do something terrible out of selfishness and get rewarded with an awesome woman loving you. Stockholm syndrome anyone?

Chris B

You make out like JL regrets the movie for this reason, which isn't true at all. She felt like she did too many big budget movies over-saturating the market with herself. I doubt many people would've reacted differently to Jim over the course of 90 years

OnePlushyDude

Great pick guys glad I voted for it

OnePlushyDude

Personally, I find that this movie only works as a psychological horror from Aurora's point of view. I think it sends a terrible message as a romance. Men taking women's choices from them based on their own needs... yeah, that doesn't end badly for us in real life. Let's be honest... if Aurora had been plain looking the first time Jim saw her... then he would've kept on strolling until another sleeping woman caught his eye. Yay. And all the contrivances at the end are just there to justify Jim's honestly villainous behavior (what? no... he's too good-looking and funny)... and to prop up some sort of wish fullment fantasy happy ending. No thanks. Even JL regrets this movie.

Wendy Sparks

Most critics felt... and I agree... that it would've been a much better movie from Aurora's point of view... slowly figuring out the horrifying truth that Jim was the villain. Not as it is... a 'See? It all worked out, no matter what I did to you' romance.

Wendy Sparks

They could have shared the auto doc suspended animation function.... alternating periods of waking together for a year, then alternating years alone, to extend their lives. They would have been about 80 years old each.... but they both would have at least seen the new world they were going to.

Keith Duperreault

I remember watching an interesting youtube video suggesting an alternate cut of this movie where we see things through Jennifer Lawrence's characters eyes. It would have added a nice mystery element to the first part of the film, and the audience could have discovered what Chriss Pratt's character did and went through together and decide to forgive him or not together, through her eyes. I loved that idea and I think it would have elevated the movie even more.

Uga Engelhart

Believe it or not..... this film has a lot of CGI in it and was not actually filmed in deep space!

Keith Duperreault

That would be a dark twist. She kills him, is alone, gets depressed, wakes someone else, they kill her, rinse and repeat until everyone is dead.

Schmaster

Should probs watch the outro :)

A major factor you don't seen to be truly taking into account about James dealing with being alone for only a year is the knowledge that you will NEVER see another living being again. You were saying you would be fine living a year by yourself but that is with the hope that you will be able to see someone later. Yes we had lockdowns for a number of months but people knew they would eventually end and we would get back to normal. James had dealt with a year of loneliness and knew he had decades left if he couldn't bring himself to suicide, or make the terrible choice of waking someone else up.

RedFox333

It's time for some good movie ✨🎞🕶🎡🎠

Dude

It was but imagine a whole life alone maybe 80 years never seeing another human or living thing again

Kim Magee

This was an excellent movie. Although it was a selfish choice to wake her up. Lying on top of it made it worse. Luckily it worked for them.

Anthony Ancona

I love this movie, takes you on an emotional journey

Kim Magee

That moment with the crow bar I think she stopped herself from killing him because she would have been completely alone on the ship.

Angelina Sargent

Yay

Kim Magee

I can't wait for the Avatar reaction!
