FIRST TIME WATCHING The Hunger Games (2012) Reaction!

Comments

This comment my be 532 days late, but I just really felt the need to commend you for realising that the reason she missed that first shot in her private session is because that bow is not what she is used to. Every other reactor says she misses that 1st shot b/c she is nervous. You are the only ones who understood that it's a completely different material which changes it's weight, and it's not hand-crafted so she shouldn't be 'correcting' for the 'flaws' that she is used to compensating for to shoot her own as perfectly as she usually does. The fact that you understood how those things can change her initial shot immediately is very impressive. That alone has made this the best reaction to "The Hunger Games" that I've ever seen (and i've seen A LOT of them). I actually scared my dog from shouting out with joy when you mentioned the correct reason for her aim being off. Thank you for finally giving me what I've been craving a reactor to notice.

Funny that you mentioned Fortnite when you were talking about the theme of the movie, there is a similar themed older Japanese movie called "Battle Royale" from 2000 which pitted high school students against each other in the name of population control, and it's where they got the game genre name from. I haven't seen it in years, but from what I remember it was more violent. The girl who played Gogo in Kill Bill was in it as well.

I don't read a lot. At all. So I'm not one of those "books are better than the film adaptations" kind of person. But I did read these books. And they are way better. There's so much more explanation of the world. Some things in this movie you wouldn't understand if you hadn't read the book. I think they could've done a better job world building in the movie. Plus the characters in the book were so much more fleshed out. I was really attached you them while reading. But it feels like the movie was really rushing to get to the action instead of really making you feel for the characters. And that would've made everything so much more tense and heartbreaking.

Katniss and peta's celebrity name would be katpiss or peniss.

Finally got to watching this reaction! This was honestly powerful seeing you both react to this! It's a moving story, and always made me break down crying...literally at every point you guys cried lol! Rue's death gutted me. The aspect of this being a fight to the death heightens everything. First time I watched the series, I was obsessed. Long term, it didn't stick with me as much as other series do, but I still do love the series! It's always fun watching people discover it though bc it reminds me of how it made me feel when I first watched it as opposed to years later after similar type films & shows almost copied this. So re-watching with you guys reminded me why I was hooked when I first watched it! So thank you for that--this was a powerful reaction! I'm one of the ones who called it more of a teen dystopian series lol! Butthat wasn't a knock on the actual story, just a descriptive. And teen for me doesn't mean campy romance. Many of my all time favorite books are YA and The Giver book is one of my favorite classics that is in a similar YA genre as The Hunger Games. The original Hunger Games books are also under YA dystopian. Around the same time those books came out, multiple other YA dystopian books and films based on those books came out, so I think the over-saturation eventually made me lose interest over time ha! Some time and space from Hunger Games though helps to come back to it with fresh eyes. For me, It's a different category than a Nolan or Villeneuve type film as their films are focused on telling story in a way that can only be told via filmmaking, so my previous comments were mostly about how my personal feeling is they are high quality films, which doesn't mean worse or better story, just that they're more a treat for cinephiles. I love them all, but as a cinephile it sometimes makes me sad when I see films that have great filmmaking not getting as much support. But I love all the various kinds of films! Hunger Games has a very compelling story. Excited to watch the rest of your reactions for the rest of the series!

Chrissy

I think I enjoyed the movie more this time that on my first watch lol. Also, can't believe you've not seen Squid Games! Hoping that's on the list of shows to react to?

Elle

This might come off strange, but this is a great comment aha. Myself I had the first books recommended as a teen, then loved the films as a young adult!

Zebraa

1:10:17 - actually that actor, Eric Millegan, is 38 years old at the time of shooting. He has a very young features.

Scarlett Monrow

I think I cried more tonight watching this with y'all than I did reading the book or seeing in theaters...

GeekMom

I think we said this also tbh <3

47:48 - there is a reason why Katniss missed. Every single bow is different and even the best archer in the world would need at least 1 shot to get the feel for the bow and hit the bullseye on the next shot.

Scarlett Monrow

I wish they would either use make up or CGI or something to make Jennifer Lawrence look like she missed a meal in the last 6 months. With her cheeks hanging off her face she does not project "hunger" in any way. In the books, Katniss was gaunt, you could tell she didn't eat often.

Scarlett Monrow

lesser hemsworth is WILD lmfao

connie

I am so surprised you hadn't heard the theme of the movie before. In America it seemed you couldn't miss the storyline in adds but maybe that was just because I was sadly curious and upset by the storyline. Therefore, when I watched it I wasn't quite as surprised in the beginning as you were. Good reaction!

Jody Houser

Can't wait to binge watch all of these when you're finished. They get better with every movie imo, but the 2nd is my fav.

Tara L

You will need to watch Catching Fire, then Mockingjay 1 now you will enjoy the next movie in the franchise

Rellis Clements

I never read the books and had noooo idea about any of Haymitchs' game, what # etc. That is HUGE lure for his character and makes understanding him that much more heartbreaking yet endearing. 💔

Katie Young

Very Fun!

I've read the series several time through, and watched the movies a million times. lol jk. But a lot. I never get tired of it. The movies do leave out a lot from the books, but it still stayed as true as it could, considering the type of media. I enjoy both, equally. Separate art forms. I do want to mention that people have the wrong idea about these series (books & movies) because the publishers released these books a YA novels, because, well, the cast/characters are young adults. But, to me, it could easily have gone into the adult fiction category. But I suppose Suzanne Collins had to make a choice that would appeal to the most audience on it's release. It found it's way into adult's heart anyway. How couldn't it. Katniss, to me, is the epitome of courage in a character, who is terrified, but move forward despite of it. Jennifer Lawrence was brilliant in it. I should ban her movies from my list of favorites (for cultural reasons), but I just can't. That's how much I love this story. When Haymitch realized that he got "good" candidates this year, he put in more effort. He thought 'finally. maybe we can win.' I know you are committed to finishing other series, and that's fine. It shows that you care about your viewers. But, I hope the wait isn't too long to finish this one. I'll wait patiently, tho. Fantastic reaction!!! Looking forward to the rest of them. #ForRue RIP.

angie808

I'm only about 20 mins in and I've seen atleast 4 new shades of red in Robs' face. Love this series but it's always tough to watch at the same time.

Katie Young

Was I the only one who spotted Deanna's husband, Reg from The Walking Dead working as one of the technicians in the control center? He was the tech who dropped the tree to get her redirected back from the edge of the game.

Brenda Schmitt

Dystopian movies are always fun because they make you question these extreme circumstances that could become a reality. I’m so happy you guys loved this movie this series is amazing and I can’t wait for you to watch the others.

James

Well, books are written in such way like Katniss Everdeen tells us the story about herself, and this first one is more emotionally heavy. They did good job in this movie, but it is impossible to convey everything that she is thinking and feeling at each moment visually. In books many things are explained very deeply and knowing that context, this story has more deepness.

Dude

I'm so glad you addressed that you will be going through and watching sequels to the movies you've watched. Great reaction to this one (as always). Really looking forward to watching your reactions to the rest of them. Thanks guys!

Bradley Weeks

Can't wait for you to watch Catching Fire! There is so much more going on in this movie besides the hunger games itself. But for now, we're seeing everything from Katniss' point of view who only wants to save her sister. The very fact that this was the 74th hunger games has so much implications. It has permanently changed the dynamics of families in these districts. Every year, parents have to expect their children to fight and die. This is why Katniss said she won't have children. The capitol feeds off of people from the different districts, their talents, and natural resources. Each district specializes in something. For instance, District 12 are coal miners. President Snow is intelligent and experienced. If you notice, he doesn't dress too outlandish like everyone else in the capitol (except Cina). He is very much aware. There's a lot of politics and brainwashing through media in these movies. The capitol punishes districts in one way or another. They are also very manipulative. Like the forest fire in the games, they do the same shit to the districts to control them.

Christine

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say how happy I am you gave this movie (and hopefully the entire series) a shot. There are a couple of details that the movie doesn’t really make that clear that I want to highlight if you plan on continuing these movies: (1) The alliance group are called Career tributes and their districts (1 & 2) are the ones that consider the games a pageant of honor and they grow up training for it. This movie mentions it very briefly but it’s significant to know because it tells you how rigged the games are to begin with for the other districts and that most of the other 73 Hunger Games were won by one of them. (2) They also vaguely gloss over the dog creatures at the end, but just like the “tracker jackers,” they’re sick creations made by the Gamemakers to make it more exciting for the privileged people of the Capitol. It’s no supposed to be so prominent as it is but the Gamemakers interfere with the games whenever they feel the need to, whether it’s through that forest fire or the mutations or “mutts” which they are referred to as. The Capitol clearly doesn’t care about changing the rules and doing whatever they want, and the trademark “Mockingjay” is an unintended result of Mockingbirds breeding with a mutt called a “Jabberjay,” which were created to mimic entire speeches, which makes sense why the Mockingjays can mimic songs, which Mockingbirds are known for singing. (3) And lastly, every district has at least one former Victor and current mentor and Haymitch is the only surviving one from 12. He won his games during the 50th Hunger Games, so it explains a lot about his behavior when you consider the trauma of not only the games, but having to mentor 46 tributes over 23 years that all ended up dying. The movies don’t explain enough of this, but every 25 years is considered a “Quarter Quell” where the games have a special feature to it to make it more exciting. Since Haymitch’s games were the 50th, that year they doubled the amount of tributes. So it was 2 boys and 2 girls per district for a total of 48, so Haymitch surviving that is pretty wild. Again, this is just giving context and not spoiling anything because the movies do a pretty poor job explaining this compared to the books. I really hope you guys continue the rest of these movies!

Pat McConnell

first time for me too, very enjoyable

ezza

To be clear, "Catching Fire" isn't a sequel per se; it's the second act of a 3-act story. The movies divided the third act ("Mockingjay") into 2 parts because money. Point is that you haven't really watched "Hunger Games" (thus discharging your commitment to the March poll) until you've watched all 3 acts. I also disagree with the characterization of these books as a series of "young adult dystopian novels". It's very adult, and it's barely more dystopian than modern life. Stories of evil leaders and putting children through life-or-death cruelty is just the evening news, at least here in the US.

Craig Rairdin

Hope the sequel, Catching Fire is soon. One of the few films that can surpass its own first movie.

xRivalize

my favourite part about the hunger games is the irony of "May the odds be ever in your favour" because we're shown throughout this whole movie how unfair the games can be i.e, the game makers manipulating the games with fire/rules/dogs or how in order for poor districts to sustain their lives and families they can put their name into a reaping extra times in return for oil and grain. Gale had his name in 42 times during the reaping. But my ALL TIME favourite moment is when we see Cato come to the realization that for his whole life, he thought the games were his to win. He trained, he volunteered, he was likeable, THE ODDS WERE ALWAYS IN HIS FAVOUR. unfortunately he found out the hard way that when in the arena his odds were equal to everyone else because the game makers saw him as any other tribute. The games are a punishment not a competition. He was manipulated to think his life matter when in reality, the odds were never in his favour. I could watch a whole movie just from Cato's POV. His story is so sad. Great Reaction!

Emma McIntyre

Not only does Haymitch probably have vivid horrible memories of his time in the games but he’s had to mentor & watch two kids die from his district every year since he won. I would be a shell if a person as well, though to be honest he is stronger than me bc I would have ended it for myself years ago.

Chael

Great reaction, look forward to seeing the sequels

Kim Magee

2nd one is by far the best

Alyssa Dyson

Ooh I love the fact you both went into this with little to no expectations and where reeled in in the first 3 minutes. Expected the tears too. The minute you said you wanted rue to win I was like 🤦🏽‍♀️

Shelley

Ah, I knew you’d like this one! I’m so glad!! In my opinion the sequel is even better! Excited to see you do more of these (and for Guardians tomorrow!) :)))

Lib.

Yeah they will be.

Shelley

Will you be watching the sequels on here?
