Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring 2001 - Movie Reaction!

Comments

It's Elrond who summoned the waters of the Bruinen to drown the Nazgul, which is also why they were so hesitant to cross the river. Whether they were aware of what might happen or rather just knew/could feel the magic I can't quite remember. The horses themselves were added by Gandalf, because why not, Gandalf is a bit of a showman after all! To go really in to detail I think the elf Glorfindel is actually pursuing the wraiths as well, so that also drives them forwards enough to risk crossing the river.

Re Gandalf falling in Moria - most of the group were further away from Gandalf than it appeared. It all happened so fast. I think we can tell that from the slow-motion. I think Aragorn might have had the best chance of getting at least partway to him with a good sprint, but Gandalf had already told Aragorn to lead them. "You must lead them on Aragorn, the bridge is near, do as I say, swords are no more use here." or words to that effect. I'm thinking that this might at least have caused Aragorn to hesitate. If both Aragorn AND Gandalf are taken out, who's going to help get their Ring-bearer where he needs to go? That quest is far more important than Gandalf's life or death, in the grand scheme of things.

Arwen is no Wizard, but the Elves do have power. It wasn't quite a spell Arwen used when she 'summoned' the water horses. I see it more as a request. She politely asked the guardians/spirits/makers/powers of the River Bruinen if they wouldn't mind lending her a hand, thank you very much. What she did doesn't really translate well. The Elves, depending on the type, age and/or life experiences, may have more awareness of, and a connection to, what we might think of as the divine beings that created, entered and built the physical universe. If somebody has more awareness of creation, and knows how to speak with those energies in a voice that is understood, then perhaps they can call upon creation itself and make the request. Saruman did the same thing with the mountain Caradhras. He has an incredibly powerful voice, as well as being a low-level divine being in his own right. He was asking Caradhras to wake up and deal with these enemies climbing all over him. Gandalf, the same level of being, was trying to calm Caradhras, tell him to go back to sleep.

Great comment. They did a fantastic job with Legolas - well cast, well acted and well directed. Orlando's reactions manage to be very notably inhuman, understated but intense at the same time, and truthful to the scene. It's amazing that he literally does not and cannot feel emotion in the same way Men do, yet we can still see it.

Hazel Angus

Rob, is there a chance you could put these up on streamable as well? On Sync.com it's been buffering for 3 days now with no success to play it. -.-

MY FAVORITE TRILOGY OF ALL TIME! I finally have time to sit and watch this one with you guys! 💚

Michele H.

Yeah, its a common thing people miss. The ring isnt tempting because of its power, but because of what the person desires. The ring showed Sam a world of gardens to try and sway him to take the ring from frodo.. Its about the power to fulfill your desire that it uses to tempt people.

Razzlion

"It's if the ewoks had class," that made me burst out into laughter lol!

Just a couple of thoughts I wanted to share. I came and watched this full version after having watched your reactions to Fellowship and the Two Towers. So I’ve heard you mention a couple times that you haven’t read the books, but might consider it after the movies. You also mentioned in this reaction that although you have read the Hobbit, you tried to read Lord of the Rings, but couldn’t get into it. It is written in a style that can be difficult for modern readers. Although I think it is really worth the effort. But I have a suggestion that you might find an easier way to digest the books. I love to listen to them in their audio version. And while there has been a classic audio version of the trilogy for years, this past year there was a new set of audiobooks released that are narrated by Andy Serkis, the actor who played Sméagol/Gollum. And he is wonderful with voicing all the various characters. You might want to give those a try. I think they are a wonderful new version for people to enjoy. That way you can listen to the books while doing other activities, or even follow along with the text for a really immersive experience. There was also a new single volume book released that contains the entire trilogy in one text and also includes maps and drawings by Tolkien. Listening to Andy Serkis narrate while following along with this new text would be the ultimate version IMO. And they did put out a Kindle version of the one volume Lord of the Rings with the maps and Tolkien’s drawings. This is considerably cheaper than a paperback or hardcover version. I just wanted to offer these suggestions as options for enjoying the text. You both are obviously people who really enjoys the lore. I always try to encourage people that enjoy that aspect to try the books because there is so much more to the story in the books, even though they did a phenomenal job with the movies. I don’t see that anyone here has already expanded on the significance of Galadriel‘s gift to Gimli. People love to explain that and maybe they already did on your YouTube channel. But since I don’t see anything here I’m gonna go ahead and share what I understand of the significance. I often see people who react to these movies think that Gimli asking for a stand of Galadriel’s hair was odd, even creepy. So I like to point out that in the era that Tolkien wrote this story it was still a common practice to carry a lock of a loved one’s hair in items like a locket. Perhaps it would be a loved one heading off to war, or even a deceased spouse or child. So the concept is not that strange when you consider that perspective. And then there is the backstory of the making of the Simirils. It is likely that you have heard of these famous jewels that were ultimately the cause of many wars in Middle Earth. The Simirils were created by a very famous and extremely talented elf named Feanor. BTW, he was also the creator of the Palantir, also known as the Seeing Stones. As he worked on creating the Simirils he asked Galadriel for a stand of her hair because it was said to have a very special appearance. I won’t get into all the details behind why her hair was special or this response will be even longer then it is going to be already. But the important part for this story is that while Feanor asked Galadriel on three separate occasions for stands of her hair, she always turned him down. This was because she did not trust him and saw him as a vain, problematic person. But now we have Gimli, who is at first very suspicious of Galadriel, fall completely under the spell of her beauty. He intends to encase her hair in crystal so that it can be preserved forever. And Galadriel grants this request because she can see that Gimli is pure of heart and worthy of such a gift. You see Legolas smile when Gimli tells him of Galadriel’s gift, as he would have known the story of Galadriel refusing Feanor, and thus understood the significance of her gift to Gimli. Legolas’s reactions can be quite revealing throughout the films. For instance, another key moment for him in this movie is the appearance of the Balrog. You can see the terror on his face when Gandalf reveals that the creature they are about to encounter is a Balrog. As an elf he understood more than anyone besides Gandalf what they were facing, as in the First Age of this world there were many instances where elves were in epic battles that included Balrogs.

I had to subscribe so I could get the full reaction. Well worth it! I love Frodo's gift from Galadriel. It's like one of those seemingly useless quest rewards you get in the starting area that somehow manages to be useful 50 levels later because it works on a percentage. 😂 Reminds me of the bag of marbles from WoW.

Teth

Your reactions touched my heart honestly. You’re the first reactor I’ve seen get emotion when the fellowship is formed. I love that because I do too lol. Your reaction to losing Gandalf and Boromir. Ugh. It still gets me to this day.

Angela

Did people really not want you to do the extended version? What!? lol I always felt Boromir wasn't drawn to the power of the ring, so much as the hope of the power of the ring to save Gondor. Of course, we know what would have happened. I'm glad he redeemed himself. It's still heartwrenching to watch his death. I saw your upload of this to YT today, and realized you had a full reaction version here, on Patreon, so of course I had to become a member again. So good.

angie808

Pirates of the Caribbean someday?

Dude

I know I'm late to the conversation, but if you ever get a chance there are hours of behind the scenes material for each movie. The amount of labor and love that went in to making these was phenomenal. It looks so good, because the majority of effects were all practical and sets. Obviously some things had to be cgi and green screen, but whenever they could they went practical. Also to your questions of orcs and goblins, they are the same. If I remember orc is the Elvish term and goblin is the term from the language of Men. Goblins are also mostly describing orcs who live in caves and tunnels and are typically smaller in stature. Uruks are the much larger version bred by Saruman (and also in Mordor in the books). Beautiful reaction. Glad you both enjoyed. I cannot tell you how many times I've watched this. 20 or 30 times at least. Boromir's death ALWAYS wrecks me. Always.

Marty McGee

I visit it from time to time but not on it as much as I would like

Do you still play LOTR Online? I have a lifetime account and thought about getting back into it.

Sean Murphy

When I watched this as a kid and everyone started saying 'you have my sword/bow/ax' I honestly thought they were just giving him their weapons 😂 I was thinking look at the size of him how's he suppose to carry all that!

Michael

As a massive Warcraft Nerd, strongly approve of the WoW references :P

CardboardSpoon

Rob/Trin - Thank You for this. Awesome that you decided to do it, especially considering how long these movies are. So...Two Towers coming today, right? :)) haha

Chris B

I agree with what you said at the end, to me the fantasy setting of Lord of the Rings is beautiful but the heart of the story is the characters and their friendships. These movies are masterpieces in my opinion :D I could watch Sam and Frodo walking around talking about literally anything and still be entertained.

Tara L

Extended is the *only* way to go ... some people talk about how the "pacing" is off, but honestly theres no such thing as enough Lord of the Rings, so I just want it to be as long as possible. Also, the "concerning hobbits" section at the beginning is part of the extended and I think its sooo important.

Kristin Carter

Really appreciate this comment 🥰 and yeah literally downloaded Lotro again the next day haha 💖

Yeah it was pointed out to us on Discord and we will be using a different version for the next 2 movies ❤️

Minor thing I noticed you might want to be aware of. The version you're watching has fan subtitles for certain lines that are not actually translated in the official theatrical or extended versions. Those lines are super esoteric to most people and sometimes even confusing so just be aware. It's also why several of the subtitles are off-sync, appearing way after the actual line is spoken.

Louis Marti

I hope you guys watch The Rings of Power next, it's VERY good. (especially if you watch The Hobbit films because it's much better than those)

Louis Marti

This was wonderful. These movies came out when I was in college, and to see them in the theater at the midnight showing was a cultural event. And you are just getting started!

Thoma

Man, its been a while since I watched the full movie (admittedly, by a while, I mean less than a year, since I am yet to have gone a full year without rewatching the trilogy). Was very glad to watch it with you two. This is really what reaction content is all about, because I really felt like I could experience a little piece of that incredible feeling of watching this for the first time, through you guys and that is a gift any time it happens. Won't bother giving any of the countless fascinating lore and trivia facts that will be told by so many others, but I will say that I am so glad that you guys are fantasy MMO fans and are well-versed with fantasy tropes (many of which of course Tolkien was the origin of), because you would not believe how many reactors fail to fully pick up on the fact that the ring is an entity, not just an object, even though the movie literally spells it out. And also the fact that it has insane corrupting power which explains the actions of the people coming in contact with it. Far too many reactors who watch this tend to not be fantasy fans and as such tend to miss out on those crucial facts. Being aware of them allowed you guys to view the movie for the first time in the way that a fantasy fan would, which is much more satisfying to watch for us fantasy nerds. Also, was so excited to hear you played LOTRO, its such a cool MMO and I really think you will probably be eager to take another stab at it after watching the movies. Its still going strong after all these years, and to my understanding they are even working on some kind of major graphical overhaul some time in the near future, so its not a bad time to get back into it. :)

So happy to see this pop up today, and I just re-watched this movie *literally* yesterday, yet I couldn't be happier to run it back. Thanks for the Sunday tears, friends! haha My fun Fellowship anecdote: I was 19 when this movie came out and had only the lightest familiarity with the brand; I'd grown up with a copy of The Hobbit as a short children's picture book & read-along record, but didn't realize Lord of the Rings was a separate story. So I went to see the movie in 2001, midnight showing because it was such a big pop-culture event, yet somehow had completely missed the memo that it was part 1 of a trilogy. So there we are, 3am as that final battle is winding down and I remember literally looking at my watch and thinking to myself "good god, how long is this going to be to resolve this story?" and then minutes later the credits roll and I went "WHAT!" lol Absolutely fell in love with the story after seeing this movie and is far and away my favorite bit of literature and film ever since. Can't wait for the other reactions from you both!

Ryan Skinner

This was so wonderful watching with you both. I can’t wait for the next one. And I’m so glad you’re doing the extended versions. Totally worth it! Just a thought. I know you were upset when Gandalf fell, feeling no one went to help him. But, I think it was one of those movie moments when mere seconds are slowed down to show numerous things going on simultaneously. They really had no time to help him. It showed their reactions in the few seconds when he said, “Fly, you fools.”

MaggieS61

I did 3 weeks in NZ in 2019 and loved Hobbiton. Everything I saw was amazing.

Rebeccaf87

Basically, orcs and gobelins are the same (I think gobelins are just orcs living in caves). The big ones Saruman was breeding are called Uruk-hai.

Célia Boisson

What a great reaction ! Can't wait to see the next two with you. I made a 2-months trip in New Zealand in 2019, and one of our goals was to see as many filming locations as we could. We visited Hobbiton and it was as beautiful as in the movie. The scenary of the movie is so great because New Zealand is such a beautiful country and 90% of it was filmed on site. Also, everything looks so real because lots of real effects and makes up were used, not so much CGI (unfortunately, one of the issues people have with the trilogy The Hobbit, too much CGI).

Célia Boisson

It was wonderful to experience the full extended edition of this first film with both of you. This is hands-down my favorite movie trilogy of all time. Keep those tissues handy for the next ones!

HurleyBird

What a fabulous treat for a Sunday afternoon. So much fun to watch these with you both, your commentary was on point as always: elves being ‘ewoks with class’ and ‘the ring is a d*ck’ made me laugh so much. I’m so looking forward to the next two - so fricking good, you will not be disappointed. Thanks guys!

Laura Dawson

I may or may not have seen each one 8 times in the theater...lol. I was 14 and had read the books already. It's still my favorite series of all time.

Rebeccaf87

I've seen this movie enough times that I thought I could make it through without bawling my eyes out. Alas... let's see... as soon as I see the shire? Tears. See Gandalf? Tears. Seeing the elves? Tears. I give up lol. I'm gonna cry forever.

Allie Aalto

Sounds awesome, I'm going to do the same :) have fun!

Eisbär

Oh, this will be great. I hope I can watch it today in the evening with a few candles and good hot cup of tea…

Cindy Clarkson

Ok so I just watched the intro and your conclusion out of curiosity, and I just have 2 things to say: first of all you're going to need a few tissue boxes to make it easier 🤣 And since I read the book before watching the movie (and didn't want to give the movie a chance because I know how deceptive it can be), I can tell you it's one of the rare cases where both the book and the movie complete each other beautifully. And I don't know what's with this movie that makes you feel everything so strongly, to the point my friends and I felt physically exhausted at the end of the third movie. I've watched a lot of movies but this trilogie will always have a special place in my heart. Anyway, I'm rambling, I'm going to bed 😁

ln_wanderbooks

OMG I cant' wait! But since my weekend is over and it's already late, I'll keep it for a full pop-corn night on my next day off. I hope you enjoyed it 🥰

ln_wanderbooks

Its time!
