Just to share a little more backstory, since you were thinking that Viserys’ reign may have been the longest for a Targaryen, that honor actually goes to his grandfather Jaehaerys, who he inherited the throne from. Jaehaerys and his sister-wife good Queen Alysanne began their reign as teenagers. They came after Maegor the Cruel. But Jaehaerys is known as the Old King because he ruled for so many years. As the fourth Targaryen king, his reign was known for the expansion of infrastructure, codifying of a legal system and lots of other good but rather boring stuff. Jaehaerys and Alysanne had a ton of children and there are a bunch of wild stories related to the various kids. But the very reason that this series started with a great council coming together to determine the next in line is because Jaehaerys lived so long that his two oldest sons, who would have been the best of his children to succeed him, had died. One had died in battle and one of illness. The eldest son had only one child. Normally that should have been the one who inherited. But in this case that was Princess Rhaenys (whose mother was a Baratheon BTW). And the second son was the father of Viserys and Daemon. Since Jaehaerys called a council to help settle the succession, they voted for Viserys over Rhaenys. And Jaehaerys went along with that recommendation. His reign was 55 years. Viserys reigned for 26 years. I forgot to mention what I think is a really cool detail from the last episode. Viserys shares a name with Daenerys’ brother, who would have been the third king by that name, if he had ever been crowned. That gold mask that covered half of Viserys’ face in the last episode is a similar look to the gold covering half of Viserys’ face when Drogo poured the molten gold onto him. That is such a fun detail I think it has to have been deliberate. You were discussing Rhaenys decision to support Rhaenyra in the last episode when this episode started. To share my opinion, I think she made the decision when she saw Viserys enter the room. His turning up to hear the petitions made her realize that he would be siding with Rhaenyra. And at that point it was really in her best interest to support Rhaenyra and accept her offer of betrothal for her granddaughters. A couple of thoughts about this episode, the guy that got hanged after trying to leave the Red Keep was Lord Caswell. In previous episodes he was the one that kept coming forward for Rhaenyra. He was the one congratulating her on the birth of her child when she was headed to the Queen’s chamber right after giving birth. And he is the one who came out to greet her in the last episode when she and Daemon arrived at the Red Keep. Also, just a couple of thoughts about the foot fetish thing. If you go back and look at the episode where Alicent first sat down to eat with Larys (the episode where he sent those men after his brother and father), Alicent takes her shoes off before sitting down to eat with him. At the time I didn’t think anything about it, other than she was getting comfortable. But after this episode it made me wonder how long this type of thing has been going on. It also feels like part of this is just a power-play on Larys part, having the ability to get the queen to debase herself like that. And it is another example of how anything sexual that we have seen in Alicent’s life has been the result of men using her for their own means and her not appearing to get any pleasure out of it. I think this is an interesting contrast with Rhaenyra, who Daemon taught that sex should be about her finding her own pleasure. It is another significant contrast between the two characters. I loved the ending of this episode with Rhaenys threatening them with her dragon. And just in case you didn’t realize it, they were holding the crowning ceremony in the Dragonpit. When Rhaenys realized that’s where they were directing everybody she stopped trying to get out of the crowd and just went along with the flow, knowing that it would take her to her dragon, whose name is Meleys. They call her the Red Queen, because the spikes on her head look like a crown. And she was considered the fastest of the dragons.
