So ( as a 1st time viewer) why did the light not take all the remaining good from Ben or Locke…. At that time at least? Seems Bens most “good” ability showed up after he was judged/realized he was tricked into killing Jacob and Locke was still good after he left the island until his death. I like where you’re going in your comment I just don’t get hoe]w it didn’t take their goodness too?

I’m just finishing my 1st watch of Lost (wondering how I never watched before but also knowing I wouldn’t have probably appreciated it for its greatness previously either). I was so hoping to see Jacob visit Walt as we see him visit others though. 2 episodes left, maybe there’s still time. ; )

Mother as a smoke monster is an interesting theory. My only thing is that she has a body. She is physically killed and her body is put to rest. Unlike MiB as smoke monster, he only takes and changes forms, no physical being. This makes me think that Mother is just "Jacob-esque"... but perhaps there is more to the power of Jacob than we see directly. We know he can perform miracles, why not be able to have more awesome power (awesome in scale, not "cool" lol). Jacob doesn't like to intervene directly, so we wouldn't really see his total powers. Just some thoughts lol

Yess was so excited for you to see this one!! I feel the exact same way you do! Man oh man, I feel sooo bad for the man in black!! He learns at a young age his mom is actually a kidnapper/murderer of real mom, and then try to confide in your brother and instead of listening he beats him to a bloody pulp. then as an adult he spies and snitches, and man in black has everyone he knew get murdeeed and Jacob knowingly subjects him to a “fate worse then death” wow. So sad!! I feel so bad for him. And bad for both cause was a shit situation lol

I'd back you up, as if you see how she approached MIB inside the well before the camera shown her, is the same way MIB looks at Sawyer in his Smoke shape when he finds him at the Barracks.

I second this! it would be amazing if you reacted to some of the LOST EXPLAINED videos. However if you are unable to react to them, you should still watch on your own time, they are well worth viewing since the creator of those videos does an amazing job of clarifying and explaining the lore of LOST and the island, it will blow your mind!

First of all, this and Ab Aeterno (6x9) are my favourite episodes of the show. I just love lore.
Secondly, some of the commenters already said things that I wanted to say, even better than I would have. About the nature of Jacob and MIB, about how Mother is (possibly) the smoke monster too and more. I won't repeat everything, but here are some of my thoughts:
1. I, personally, think it was shown pretty clearly that Mother loved The Boy in Black more. The soft way she spoke to him, smiled at him, called him "special". With Jacob, she was a bit more stern and authoritative ("Do you love me? So tell me what happened" etc.).
2. I think that Mother was both "Jacob" and Smokey. She couldn't have killed the settlers on her own if she was a "normal" human.
When she saw those babies, she realised that it is an opportunity to be a mother and to pass the torch. "Two birds - one stone" (pun intended).
3. The most interesting discussion that I came across is the following:
When the Man in Black goes down the stream and into the light and comes out as Smokey, I always assumed that MIB turned into Smokey. His body, which was laying in the water after the incident, is just "leftovers". The real MIB is dead and his "soul", along with his physical "image", are now the smoke monster (Which we do meet as MIB, by the way. In the reaction you said we meet him only as Christian and Flock. All of the scenes with Jacob and the MIB were after this).
Now, the MIB did die, yes. But what if the Smoke was kind of "released" by the act of the MIB going down the hole? And he took over the body of the dead brother just like he took over the body of Lock?
I confess that I never thought about it like that until I saw the reaction to this episode on the "Reatores" channel, and Kiel brought it up. I can't say that I fully understand both sides of this discussion, but I do suggest watching their reaction to this episode for a better explanation (And for anyone who didn't watch their reaction to Lost, go and watch it! Their discussions are the best!).
Looking forward to your reaction to the last episodes! 😁🙏🏻

Once you are done with this series, you NEED to watch the Lost Explained videos on Youtube on the channel of the same name. It is a series of videos that explain EVERYTHING in perfect order and helps to understand so much of how everything is connected. I highly recommend them.

I always felt like Jacob knew he needed to die right when he did so he could create the circumstances of the candidates being able to replace him. I agree that he also was ready to die but he didn't fight back mainly because he was done setting up who could replace him and needed things to happen so the candidate maybe picked. The man in black isn't his human self anymore. The light shredded basically all goodness that he had originally and turned him into complete darkness. He is physically pure evil now and it maybe the reason they keep telling us if he escapes his evil will spread through the world.

Jacob definitely became the protector of the island because he's a pleaser... not because of a calling. And Mother seemed desperate to have replacements lined up... so she could finally be done. I do think she loved the Boy in Black more... that he was more special. Jacob was dutiful, but the Boy in Black was challenging. Really feel for the Boy and the Man in Black when he was alive and human. Not now though... he's darkly twisted and dangerous now. Enjoyed this episode and your reaction. And personally, this shines a lot of light on Jacob's dismissive response to Ben's "what about me?"... It always seemed too antagonizing. Like it hit too close to home for Jacob. Reminding him of his own version of 'what about me'... 'why do you love him more?'... why him not me. Honestly, I don't care what Miles said Jacob's last thoughts were. It very much seemed to me that he was as ready to be done as Mother was. (Afterall, Jacob vigorously fought off Richard's attempt... but antagonized Ben.)

So just a couple notes... it's slightly hinted at that "mother" was a smoke monster... what she did to the village people and how she got down to the ladder so fast and so quietly... a woman alone would have a hard time taking out a village all on her own in such a short amount of time, especially with the destruction of the village. But she was also the protector. Its why she was able to tell Jacob never to go down into the light because it's worse than death. The theory is she knew because that's what she had done and knew what it would do to him if he was curious enough to do it.
Also mother had raised Jacob as a son and flocke was supposed to be the protector, she saw he was special with him able to see dead people and that he knew how to lie and manipulate but she didn't name him so he could continue to just only be the protector but she underestimated how much his curiosity would make him want to leave.
I also want to mention in the light house episode we saw how Jacob was able to use the light to leave the island. I don't think he ever actually left himself. He used the light to kind of telepathicly leave the island... it also kind of explains what walt used to do too when he got kidnapped from the raft... walt was special also even before he got to the island. Him being on the island made whatever power he had stronger which is why Shannon and sayid was able to see walt when he was locked up with the others.
I love your mentioning of the rope that sawyer dropped in. The theory of the reason they dug in that spot with the orchid is BECAUSE they had found that rope sticking up out of the ground. There's a whole lot more to all these things that is all just speculation and theory but it makes so much sense!

This episode gives such an interesting perspective on Jacob's entire mission, his job as Protector, etc. You realize that he really doesn't have shit figured out and is actually just a very innocent child-like adult (by very nature of his isolated upbringing) who is trying to do right by someone he cared about. Someone who very well may also have had fewer answers than she led on, depending on the circumstances of how she came to be in the Protector role.
Jacob obviously learned a lot out since these incidents took place, like figuring out how to make off-island trips to visit his candidates and presumably coming to a better understanding of the importance of the Island and it's Light (otherwise, once he realized that Brother was right about there being a world away from the island, it'd stand to reason he might have gone down the same path as MIB in trying to leave permanently), but initially he was just a kid who was put upon by a parent's expectations. Huh. Sounds familiar.
There's also a very interesting theory that comes out of this episode which is that Mother also was a Smoke Monster, though it was never shown to Jacob or MIB. It explains how she knows about the "fate worse than death" and also makes her completely decimating the camp that MIB was living in (and killing everyone there?) much more plausible vs her simply being Jacob-esque. This episode answers & simultaneously poses so many questions about the mythology, I really enjoy it. Though, people did find it a bit of a large pill to swallow in 2010 when it was on the heels of such a dramatic and emotional episode which people really wanted to follow-up on!
Cheers R&T!

The light is time incarnate. Something every man has but wants more of. So to protect the light, to protect the Island, is to protect time, and thus life as we know it. This episode gives us the answer to the question: “what is the island?” It’s the source of time itself, it’s where everything started.
