Yeah, as this series is based on Fire & Blood, the meat of which is setting up and then playing out the Dance, I wouldn't expect this show (or at least this season) to go too much beyond that book's offerings (which does go into the fallout from the Dance in its final few chapters which has its own lot of conflict and drama).
F&B is supposed to be the first of a two volume set, however, so should we get the follow-up book we might well see the remainder of the Targaryen history leading up to and including the Mad King. Though I'd dare not wish for that book to be released before The Winds of Winter... lol

I highly doubt that they will link this series with the events of the Mad King. The events of HoD occur about 200 years before Robert's rebellion. that's a lot of generations of characters changing. I think this will focus primarily on this particular generation of the Targaryens, as we've heard that a lot of conflict and civil war happened in that period, with the Dance of Dragons, referenced several times in the initial GoT series.
