I found your Buffy reactions on YouTube a couple of days ago and just had to join your Patreon so I could see your reaction to the second half of this season. I’ve been a Buffy fan for 21 years… I started watching when it began airing on the BBC in the UK in January 1999, and I had just turned 16 when this episode aired on Sky One mid-1999. I don't remember much about my reactions to it when I first watched (as it's been over 21 years!) but I do remember thinking that Angel would only lose his soul for this one episode and that he would be cured by the end of it ... and feeling frustrated when I realised it wasn't going to happen right away :P Surprise and Innocence are two of my favourite episodes of the entire series… so much that I can still recite every line from them, and I even own just these 2 episodes on an official VHS tape released by WB in 1999 (which cost me about the same as you’d pay for an entire season now). One of the main themes of the show is that it’s supposed to be a metaphor for high-school and growing up, and the monsters Buffy fights are generally metaphors for the real-life ‘monsters’ that teenagers have to face. And we see that in this episode in particular… Angel turning ‘evil’ after sleeping with Buffy is a metaphor for when a guy is kind and loving and says what the girl wants to hear in order to get her into bed, then once he’s got what he wanted, he ‘turns mean’ and gives her the brush-off…. which leaves the girl feeling guilty and ashamed afterwards, thinking it was something she did that led to his cruel behaviour, and no matter how hard she tries to get over him, he’s always there, hanging around, taunting her.

loved experiencing this episode again with you; and just like the first time, I teared up haha especially during that scene with Giles. he's definitely always been like a father to Buffy and never more so than in that moment. also so excited that you've finally been introduced to Angelus and as you can see, unlike Spike, he likes to play with his food. much like you did, I felt so bad for Buffy throughout this episode because you can tell she felt so guilty but also heartbroken because she knows Angel is gone but everytime she sees Angelus, it's hard for her to accept it.

I love your gasp when Xander and Cordy come apart and Willow is there. One thing I will say that really impacted me the first time I watched this episode was David Borenaz. I wasn't a very big fan of the Angel character in the first season and a half and I really thought David wasn't a very good actor. However, even though Angelus is pretty annoying in instances, he's a very lively character, completely different from Angel and David shows a lot of versatility going from one version of him to the next. You can really tell he's psyched to have his go at being the bad guy. lol.

Giles has so many great scenes over the course of the series. He was always Buffy's cornerman, the most dependable & loyal person in her entourage, and the closest thing she had to a father. Also a closeted rock star as we find out in that episode where he sings that The Who song and Xander is so jealous he can't just give the man props for genuine talent

Timothy Nikiforovs

Glad you picked up on the score. Christophe Beck composes a good chunk of seasons 2-4 and never fails to deliver. The music most heard in the past two episode is named "Buffy & Angel Love Theme".

Okay, so in the Bad Eggs comments I mentioned I thought that episode had two main take-aways for the audience. In Bad Eggs, we see Buffy and Angel all over each other the entire episode. Buffy talks about only seeing her future with Angel. There was the sex ed class talking specifically about the unwanted consequences of sex. All of that was meant to be a big lead up to the downfall of the Bangel relationship. This, to me, was the more obvious point of that episode. The other, which is more my personal opinion, I cannot tell you yet. That is still to come. There were also some great subtle hints in the previous episode, specifically in Buffy's dreams that pointed to the fact that she would be the cause of Angel's "death". Like in the real world Joyce dropping the plate and asking Buffy is she really thinks she's ready was about her driving. In her dream, you could take it to mean is she really ready to sleep with Angel. There are also some clothing parallels between her and Drusilla who kept threatening Angel. In the opening sequence, Buffy is wearing a kind of periwinkle silk sleeping top with a black cami top on underneath. In the dream, Dru blindsides her, as she says, and kills Angel out of nowhere. Dru is wearing all black. Buffy suddenly wakes up and she's only wearing the black top. Then in the party dream sequence when Buffy is wearing the white dress and Dru has Angel with a knife to his throat, if you look carefully, Dru is wearing the same dress as Buffy. Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head.

Well I guess they directly answered that question right after that point in the video when Buffy confronted Ms. Calandar :p

So, yes, the sex had something to do with it, it was the catalyst. Watching your video just now, at the 25-minute mark, answering that question for you. As Ms. Calandars uncle said, one minute of TRUE happiness, one moment that he doesn't feel the weight of his soul and one moment he forgets the tortures of being a vampire, the soul their tribe imparted on him is removed, and he reverts back to Angelus. So it is a direct cause and effect.

So many priceless scenes. I love not only Oz’s gentle refusal to make out with Willow, but the look on Willow’s face as she realizes how very special Oz is. I also love the look of “Oh shit” on Angelus’s and Drusilla’s faces when they see the rocket-launcher. Buffy grabbing Miss Calendar by the throat, demanding answers, was fierce! Buffy in tears and the Buffy-Angel love theme devastate me every time.

Tumbili

Funny how things go full circle - you seeing it was a Joss Whedon episode and knowing that it will mean its a good one - and me years ago seeing The Avengers was a Joss Whedon movie and knowing it meant it would be good.

Chris

I am so glad you did this so soon!

Phoenix Dawn

Great reaction as always! I love this episode and Giles’ speech to Buffy at the end being the great dad he is. Oz’s speech to Willow is also up there for me as a great scene. Joss wrote this in such a way to demonstrate what can happen to a girl whenever she chooses to have sex with a guy and then he just blows her off afterwards and the scene where Angelus says “you were a real pro” and “Hey, love you too” are heartbreaking.

Ashley

One of the hands-down best episodes in Buffy's history, imho. It's a pretty huge accomplishment to shift every single character's perspectives and goals in one go, on any show, and usually a mistake to try, but it works here because Joss spent so much time building their characterizations and relationships in all these tiny, layered ways. And it's an important episode for what it did for the show and network, too: In one fell swoop, it managed to transition Buffy from just a cult favorite to a Real Drama. Also, your face when Willow found out about Xander and Cordy was without a doubt my favorite reactor reaction, ever. 😂❤ So so looking forward to the rest of the season (and show)! And congrats on graduating!

Bixgirl1

I don't rewatch season 2 as often as the others but this episode is much more the Buffy that people love than most of whats come before and is a much better indicator of the rest of the show.

Vincent Valentin

Imagine being 17 years old and having to deal with this shit. The entire world literally on her shoulders and a heartbreak of that level

Dani Dekay

Loved this reaction. This is a really intense episode of the show, and certainly one of the most pivotal. I can't wait for you to see the rest of the season, there are some really great ones coming up after this.

Arriane Skjonnemand

This episode is crazy and brilliant, but what's coming...you haven't even begun.

Miranda

This is the episode where the show went from just being good to amazing. Shit gets real from this point on.

Chess Red Eagle

1:18am, screw sleep, I'm watchin this now...

Brent Justice

Eek! Can't wait to watch this tonight when I get home from work!
