“Come on, show me,” $xname taunts, the two of you circling each other. $cxthey smirks at you, eyes glimmering in challenge. “Don’t worry, I’ll go easy on you.”
“Oh, will you?” You briefly readjust your grip on your wooden dagger, every muscle in your body poised to lunge—you only need to find the best moment for it.
“I wouldn’t want to risk hurting that pretty face.”
You huff a laugh. “You should worry more about your own.”
It is not as if you’re under any illusion that you stand a chance against $xname as you are, but you want to show $xthem that at the very least, you can hold your own against a common bandit. Perhaps you might even impress $xthem a little in the process.
Keeping focused on finding a good moment to attack is more difficult when faced with an opponent who far outclasses you, however, and your need to impress $xthem also unsettles your nerves. What if you make a mistake and embarrass yourself?
'Just pick a moment,' you tell yourself while $xname watches you like a hawk. Despite $xtheir teasing, there is no amusement in $xtheir face: $xthey looks at you with serious assessment. '$cxthey’ll see all of it coming, anyway.'
Taking a breath, your prepare yourself, and then you lunge.
