The series is and is not anime original. There IS source material....but when making it into a TV anime, a LOT of things were changed and many things are VERY different, most people agree that the anime is very superior. As for the movie, it's also a movie you can rewatch multiple times and you'll see and figure out more stuff each time, it's great.
