Because Fate/Stay Night was a visual novel, and it had all these routes, there are mysteries that get unfolded in each one. This is also why Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero are a bit hard to say which to see first. Stay Night was made first so it kinda spoils the ending of Zero and Kiritsugu, while Zero spoils a bunch of little points you wouldn't know now, like Rin and Sakura, or Saber's identity which they hide by Shirou being so weak that he could be forced to spill it if he knew, even Illya would be a total mystery without Zero. If you didn't know better, she would just be a random homicidal loli.
