Bad Haircut Day...? | Monogatari Series: Second Season Episode 12 REACTION

Nadeko was way too into Araragi's magazine collection LOL

Comments

I know I'm late to these lol I'm working on catching up I get where you're coming from, but I think you might be a bit misinformed about "personas" and "shadows." I totally recommend reading about Carl Yung and his philosophies, but long story short: the shadow isn't your "true self," but is all of the things that you repress about yourself. The persona and the shadow are both the self, but repressing the shadow self can cause massive over-corrective outbursts, which is what we saw here.

saying that was Nadeko's true self definitely has the wrong nuance to me and If I would put it in more correct nuance to me I would say "Nadeko showed her true feelings during that outburst" or "Nadeko was true to herself during that outburst"(as in not holding back her feelings). Basically what I am trying to say is that the true self stuff tries to communicate the correct thing but lacks the correct nuance so it can easily be taken the wrong way and tick people off but it is good to remember that people are not perfect at communication and nuance can easily be interpreted very differently based on personal experience

From the comments I'm seein' it's probably best for me to skip this episode's reaction lol excited for the next one though! :D

Idk, as an introvert I am always presenting a reserved, cool, taciturn persona but have definitely experienced times where I truly wanted to just crash out and go in on somebody. Apply this to the extreme with someone as socially stunted as Nadeko and I really don't think it's beyond the pale. All Kuchinawa-san seems to be saying is "since your shield against the outside world (bangs) has been taken away and myself as an oddity is afflicting you, you can't put on a front anymore" not that it's her TRUE SELF that can't be changed. She is essentially filter-less. The logic for your gripe sounds reasonable I just don't think it really applies in this case. And as far as never being shown thoughts like that before... Watch the next episode :)

So with the whole sengoku going off part. I think it was her trying to express herself (without her filter) and her frustrations to everyone (also she just had a traumatic experience with a pair of scissors). Not knowing how to express herself (since she has never actively done that before) she took inspiration from 80s manga characters... (I remember times when i was a kid seeing something cool on tv and wanting to imitate it. hell i still do it kaka) I think delinquent manga to be exact. And yea i think anime does tend to exaggerate

One of my favorite episodes. Her outburst was amazing. I'm calling bullshit on that "its easy to change your personality". You can change how you act by practicing but your base stays the same. On therapy I'm trying to untangle all different things that are build upon this base. Learning about myself allows me to change how I act but it isn't changing my personality but reducing distortion built over this base. I agree that usual anime talk about "true self" is even more bullshit. Often because they say that your desires are your true self so not following every impulse is hiding your true self. But in reality the part following the impulse is just as much part of you as the part that is resisting the impulse. But you went WAY WAY too far saying that it's easy to change your personality. I could discuss how true it is if you said that it's possible(depending on how you define personality) but saying that it's easy is 100% not true.

Toki

you can see the big change in how she talks to the serpent after her rage subsides, so it's not like it stays the full 180, but this kind of 180 is completely possible when under a lot of emotions (source: been there)

ElectricAnt

I like this explanation a lot! It makes a lot more sense to me now, thanks.

Mat

It's not that what Nadeko showed was her full true self, but it was the part that was suppressed the most and so it burst out first and the hardest. If they meant it to be her true personality it would have reflected in the narration :)

Completely disagree, I can completely relate to Nadeko's outburst. The more you keep running away from it and bottling it up, the worse it gets once you finally lose control and let it all out. You can't just "adapt" to being hurt, otherwise we'd go extinct long ago.

ElectricAnt

I liked Sengoku before but this arc made her one of my favs. this episode put her in the solid running for second best girl (hachikuji/shinobu/sengoku)l. No one could beat senjo
