2024-11-11 17:59:02 +0000 UTCThe anime and this movie are usually interpreted as the same ending since Misato and Ritsuko are shown to die in the same way in episode 25 and episode 26 says that Human Instrumentality happens; however, the focus on Shinji's mind in the anime ending makes it seem less bleak than the "literal" effect on the world. Also, the part with Asuka connecting with her mother is her realizing that her mother's soul is in Unit02, it's a sort of similar situation to what happened with Shinji's mom but the contact experiment made her soul split which is why Asuka's mom went crazy although her soul is implied to have fully come back together in Unit02 after her death. I believe the scene with Gendo during the Third Impact is him getting rejected from joining the rest of the souls in Instrumentality.
