Some chill behind-the-scenes thoughts on being a content creator, an interesting exchange I had this week, and my updated take-off timelines.

It's a great point Roman. Yes, I think intelligence wants to be free just as much as information does. One way or another, the models will become widespread, especially in a world of distributed compute.

Philip

I would like to touch on your point about the AGI being potentially expensive ($2000 per month for just a couple of queries). The most innovations actually did start like this: being exclusive gimmics for the rich (cars, electricity, air travel, computers, cell phones). There are only few things that followed an opposite pattern appearing for free or at a low price for masses, which had to do with these particular innovations being more valuable upon a large user base. However, a thing like even GPT-4 does not need a large user base. It could have easily started as a super-tool for the elite and have a product life cycle of 3-5 years per model version. However, instead this neck-breaking race commenced. Do you see this economic phenomenon eventually self-correcting?

Roman

Listening to Philip self-reflect and self-correct like an LLM. :-)

Great insights. This is why I support you, because you are not trying to push some click baity narrative. You are a great source of insight about AI, and less obviously you are an inspiration as a human being. We need more principled people in the world and less people playing the algorithm optimisation game.

Thank you for all the work. Your videos are amazingly valuable. Thank you for the lack of politics. I love that you are principled and stick to your principles but I also love that your channel is mostly about giving us facts to help us make moral and political decisions, rather than you trying to make those decisions for us (which is want so many other content creators do).

James Maclaurin

Was listening to this while sipping a caffeine free coke and then heard you mention that at the end 😆👌

I agree completely. There's definitely a place for a simple "what happened last week in AI" in just 10 minutes format. I would love a Patreon format where Philipp just does a quick weekly update sharing his thoughts. 1-3 interesting developments from the past week, the best/most interesting paper he has read, an anticipated upcoming event, and some gut predictions would be incredibly helpful. Such highlights would increase the value of the Patreon subscription by a lot. No need for deep insights, just a short update with some links to explore. I personally find it extremely hard to stay up to date in the AI space, if nothing crazy has happened in the last week and I am short on time/or traveling. An AI hype-free weekly news briefing/gatekeeper grounded in deep insights who can shine light on what actually matters would be invaluable.

Luca

I really appreciate your integrity. I think it's pulled many of us here. Speaking of Europe, would be interesting to hear your take on AI in Europe. And when I say Europe, I include UK, not always sure if you Brits include yourselves or not :)

Thanks for pulling the curtain a little bit. I just want to express my gratitude for your thoughtful approach. The high level of self awareness and constant self reflection is showing in the outstanding quality of the resulting videos. So, please, keep doing what you’re doing. Love your work, Philip!

On the topic of covering things where you don’t provide unique added value, consider the portion of your audience that subscribes just to keep up with current events and otherwise isn’t seeing those updates covered at all. I don’t want to dictate what you should do, just keep in mind that you don’t have to offer unique content for it to be valuable. I think there is an appetite for simpler, shorter “here’s what’s happened lately” videos from a trusted source in addition to more in-depth unique content. Only try that if you’d feel good about it.

Alexis Olson

I hope you’re getting product placement dollars from Coca Cola. ;)

One thing I like that Dave Shapiro has done historically is that he polls his audience with the community YouTube polls. Might be nice to get a more exact idea of where your audience stands on various issues and individuals.

James Patton

To make it a little more appealing to align yourself with your values, I for one would not have subscribed if i did not see this kind of "self policing" in your reasoning and content On the Dario point, my take is that he is seeing the power of agenticness in the latest systems. I and most humans i meet hallucinate all the time, but our agenticness allows us to cope in many interesting ways. (A fun demonstration is Claude plays pokemon https://www.twitch.tv/claudeplayspokemon. Somehow i can't help but feel that it is the real "sparks of agi" moment, and it doesn't even have a memory, just a little notebook. I just want to go into it's source code and make it an AGI myself. )

Did you see Kyle's video with the lawyer who did the statistical analysis about voter suppression? I'm not saying it's true; I'm saying it is a possibility.

Mason M1993

Did not realize you've been making content for that long. No wonder everything blew up for you! Lots of experience to draw upon.
