So when this sketch came out there were several people saying Kizarasunga's reaction was too much, and I just really don't know what to tell people who are surprised that a half-feral warlord surrounded from a young age by people who want to kill her has a violent temper. I'm not writing fairy tale paragons here. She is only alive because she is quick to attack. She was voted to her position by the other chieftains but she had to kill people she respected when they challenged her nomination. She does not have the privilege of tolerating disrespect. So before you call her toxic, as if she should turn the other cheek every time someone invades her space and belittles her rank, maybe stop and consider that she never enjoyed the physical security you've been lucky enough to take for granted your entire life. What's toxic is trying to "help" someone by forcing your own culture's ideals on them while simultaneously insulting theirs.

No one going to say how incredible clueless Lady Intha was in here choice of dress? Kizara is The 6 Feathers, less chiefs has fewer feathers, ergo feathers equal rank and honors earned, yet this supposed expert on zizumbir waltz in wearing a full feather boa. Honestly, she's done nothing but be insulting and tactless, she's earned everything she's received.

Its vulgar, but we've never gotten a definition

tamtheotter

I'm still dying to know what Intha's name means

Jessie

Lady Intha, you have one job. ONE JOB. Don't start an international incident. Why do I get the feeling you're about to go out of your way to fail that ONE JOB as amazingly as possible?

Locura

Nah I 100% would've done the same thing she did, only toxic here is our 'helpful' translator.

Mithara

Healthy people: she’s toxic ! Me: hah fuck yeah that lady deserved it

Jordanne Love

Exactly! She's an effing warlord!

Jack Newbill

I’ve understood her demeanor and challenges since she was introduced. She’s not the pretty princess, she’s an effing warlord.

I frankly think you made your point very well, Alli. For what it's worth, I've drawn a lot of my writing inspiration from your characters, Kizarasunga more than others. I think she's an excellent character, and as someone with a Master's degree in English, I feel like I'm pretty qualified to say that.

Too often in contemporary writing a protagonist has a tough backstory. But it never influences their current behavior. That’s a disservice to both the reader and the protagonist. I prefer to read characters with depth. Initha basically devalues everything Kizarasunga has done, and tells her she would simply be a baby factory . I think Initha gets off light.

I really like seeing a non-"good/sweet/polite girl" protagonist who is still fighting for the good of her people--it's not just men that get to be complex characters! I also really like that a) her fierceness has logical reasons, and b) she recognizes the price of violence. So many "complex" male heroes are violent just to make them ~dark~ and ~gritty~.

Noël Chrisman

Allison you are Awesome, you still can gave us a well written reason for Kizarasunga reaction that to me really didn't need one because you have established Kizarasunga character to so well like any other character's that play roles in your stories.

Craig Estrella

Beautifully written. You have done an amazing job, and all of the characters feel like their own people with their own motivations. Great work!

Well considering she got her nose busted in the old draft, she got off pretty lucky. I do have to admit those bruises give me chills. I mean she could have slapped or just punched her, but this option still shows violence and marks. Definitely sets up how the royal family, especially Jintu, might see her for a while as violent warrior.

So sorry you've had to defend your characterization and plot. What she did wasn't "good," but um...why is that the only goal in telling a story? Makes no sense. Didn't even occur to me to criticize it. Hell! I thought she got off easy, especially compared to the previous version, which I remember quite distinctly. I normally would have more sympathy for a non-combatant being attacked and unable to defend themselves, but I despise the woman. She reaped what she sowed by being an absolute shit at her job. Unable to read a room, body language or facial expressions. She knew there was tension, but not to what degree, let alone how to diffuse it. But mostly: utterly, utterly disrespectful. I was more surprised and appalled by her just touching Kizarasunga, a visiting foreign leader, the first time pages ago than by Kiza snapping and putting the woman in her place. Personally, our good Emperor should have dismissed her long before now, when she started touching Kizarasunga familiarly, but then he doesn't exactly know what he's doing either.

Her temper was never triggered by Gomi. He made a single comment while visibly nervous in a room where she clearly had all the power. Intha made her uncomfortable from the start and exacerbated her rage immediately after she was told the war that has directly affected her for most of her life is continuing for foolish reasons. Kizarasunga held back with her attacker in the city because Zusufula caught her first and reminded her there were children present. At no point in the comic has she held herself back after her temper flared. The next chapter delves more into her back story directly because of this incident, but please don't make it out like I've misrepresented her thus far.

Allison Shaw

Kizarasunga isn't my favorite character (I'm hoping to like her more as the story goes on) but judging her harshly for this is def unfair. I'm excited to see the consequences for this though, like all around for everybody!

shay

FWIW, those are points that could stand to be established in the script. So far, we've seen Kizarasunga keep her temper under control when Gomi volunteered to be the hostage and when the ex-soldier came at her with a weapon. Lady Intha's myopic condescension was probably something new and unexpected though. The subject would be good conversation fodder for Jintu later on: give him the same mindset as the people who commented on the sketch, and let him learn about the life she's had. And watching Kizarasunga try to put words around the sheer audacity of Lady Intha's insults would be fun.

mike stone

Intha actually was trying to help, but her viewing the world through colonialism-colored glasses backfired in the worst way: instead of being friendly and helpful, she came across as clangingly tone-deaf, smug and condescending to the most dangerous person in the room. So, as Douglas Adams once put it, ten out of ten points for style, minus several million for stupid.

Thank you for your explanation. It's kind of frustrating to see people looking to tear apart protags when they don't respond with absolute purity or "Lawful Good" energy. Sometimes there's just a lack of understanding of a character's background and how it colors their behavior. Trauma/upbringing doesn't excuse or make right poor behavior/reactions, but it certainly explains it. This is also the beginning of the story and could show a point of character growth for the TQ on her learning to control her fierce temper, though again, it's kept her alive and respected in her own home.
